At the end of the day you are paying a subscription for less than 100% of the game. Asthetic or not, they are with holding content for a ransom. Pay the money or you cannot access it.

And I honestly think there would be less.
If you give them more money they will spend it on developing their next title, leeching staff from their current one or just drinking Champers all night in strip clubs and coming to work hung over.
They won't be in any "hurry" to add content unless the playerbase looks like it's drying up. Same as usual.
They have alreadty planned what their budget is for updates and expansions. Planned the number of staff and the schedules. If you give them more money, they still have the same plan scheduled, they will just be personally richer.
He isn't mis-reporting, he just worded things poorly. It's clear to me that when he asks if we have to pay to enjoy CO he is speaking specifically about micro-transactions and then follows up the "Thankfully No" with Roper's quote about M-Ts only being for aesthetic items. In other words, we don't have to pay for M-Ts to enjoy CO.
And he also said this:
And, as long as it remains the same and the core game will be free to play, I think we can all declare ourselves satisfied.
i.e. he misunderstood Cryptic's cryptic statement and misreported.

this. 100%.
One model or the other.
since they haven't officilally announced there's a sub, I'm holding out hope that they know the game will never see more then 100K subs (and quick attrition considering everywhere you go, the resounding impression of the game is "meh") if they go w/ the sub + MT model. A Guild Wars model would be perfect for this game.
Then again... with the choices we've seen Devs/Publishers make in the last two years, it wouldn't surprise me if greed got the best of them.

There's also the Atari factor here. So let's get crass and look at the numbers.
Atari basically went broke, sold off nearly all of their non-NA assets and then Infogrames (Atari's owners) bought Cryptic and gave them to Atari. Atari's new focus became "online-centric".
Part of the deal was a fairly hefty bonus for exceeding certain profit targets. Infogrames paid $28 million to buy Cryptic and there's a potential $48 million more to be paid depending on future performance. That's a lot of incentive not to pump that RMT cash back into development, certainly not before March 2011.

Roper has said in interviews that there'll be a subscription and that's backed up by the game info available on websites selling the pre-orders.
We’re launching with a subscription model, but are open to alternate methods of delivering different components – not just with Champions Online, but from a company-wide perspective.
It should be free to play if they are going to have the microtransaction store. It's really the only way to justify it. But I'm afraid it will be both pay to play and have a store.... yuck.
It's not like anyone in their right mind would try to release a subscription mmo with microtransactions...
Yea, except WoW, WAR, CoX, just about every SoE game.... but those are all failures.
Granted these games were not released with a MT system, but they all have one now + a monthly subscription.
I'm sorry but WoW and possibly WAR do not (unless they added a MT shop once I left). WoW definitely does not have an RMT shop. Unless you believe Roper's spin about how putting a price barrier on account management suddenly equates selling ingame items for RL cash.
Yea Server Transfer/Character changes aren't Micro-transactions.
Some people think the TCG and Blizzcon stuff are a forum of MTs, tho.
I don't, those are just extras for buying the cards or going to Blizzcon.
The loot cards are completely random.
If you are buying tickets to Blizzcon just for the in-game pet or suit you're just plain stupid.
Haha! You're being awfully selective just to justify your opinion.
First, WoW does a MT shop. Its just not owned or operated by Blizzard. Two, there is no denying that thousands of people bought the cards ONLY for the in game items. Three, server transfers and character changes are MT's by every definition of the word. Four, would you rather play the lottery in hopes of winning or would you rather have a guarantee that you're money will purchase what you want?
Are you saying that if Cryptic changed their MT shop so that when you spend money you may or may not get a random reward, that you would prefer that?

One would hope that they are ready to switch to a F2P model in the realistic event that subs do not cover the costs.
Unfortunately with Bill Ropers name on the label, I suspect they will just be trying it on and attempt both concurrently.
It's Pay to play, just by looking at it., cmon it's so easy to determine that these days google it.
Google is what led me to this article :P

Quoted for the truth.
