They plan to keep FFXI running, so why not try to draw in the casual crowd with their new game, and let the hardcore ffxi loyalists stay where they are. SE makes money from both.
But the fact is right now FFXI is slowly losing it the content is releasing slower and SE knows this which is why for the past 2 months and next month they added Mini Expansions with around 15 missions. With exceptions of these addon expansions content is coming out very slow and there has been no announcement of a new full scale expansion. The last expansion Wings of the Goddess was not a big hit and still has not even gotten out all of its mission line so which means till the mission line is complete they wont release a new expansion because the game will just become broken.
Now I left FFXI for a few years for personal reason and since coming back I have been stuck with everything I do mainly past expansion missions which is required to unlock endgame so being stuck at 75 and not being able to do anything is a real drag. As for profits for SE they have made an enormous profit from FFXI so why try to draw in the WoW crowd when they could keep the loyal FFXI crowd and again make an enormous profit from their new MMO.
So unless SE does something that will drasticly improve FFXI such as content releasing as it was years ago making players benifit from helping new players or old players returning catch up on their missions I don't see it staying in its current status for more then 2 years. They want people to pay for both but with this fail economy no way people with subscribe to two games at the same time.
Now I have said this before FF series is based on group play you only play solo at the start then as you progress you will need to group to continue down your path. I don't want a WoW clone with chocobo's I want a FF game from the ground up.
I always wanted to like FF XI... but I missed the boat.
By the time I tried FF XI I was already so acustomed to certain things that I just couldn't get into FFXI.
But with FF XIV coming... I can hop on the wagon at release with everyone else, much more fun that way.
I too hope and pray it is a new experience... and from what the devs have said (though little) it promises to be a game much more directed at fun and accessibility.

All the more reason for them to make a very different game. People leaving FFXI now are probably looking for something different. If SE was suffering from a shortage of creative content to release, creating a new game would be the last thing they'd want to do. I think they still plan to keep it around for people who absolutely want it how it is, even without getting new content very often. The new game is for the casual crowd that didn't play or left FFXI, and would like something new.
Have a little faith guys, SE has a long track record for originality and level of quality in production that few can boast. They always do something different. They can see that WoW is successful because it caters to the casual crowd, and they want to tap that market themselves. That doesn't mean they will make a WoW clone; when have they ever completely copied another company's work? If they did it would be completely uncharacteristic of the company, I just don't see it.
I expect ffxiv to have faster paced movement and combat, an easier progression path, and more mechanics to ease grouping. Other than that, I expect SE to get creative with it. We'll see what happens, but I think it's safe to be more optimistic that they will come up with something original.

Wings of the Goddess is the last boxed retail expansion for FFXI. It has been announced as such by SE. I'll work on the press release later. The any more expansion to FFXi will come via the downloaded mini-expansions. It is pretty appropriate since WotG will ends where FFXI began.

pfffffffffffffffffft LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you kidding me ... Square ... Sqauresoft ... Square Enix ... have always ripped ideas from others. I really hope that was sarcastic. They have made a career of borrowing the basic of the basic concepts from everyone else and incorperating it into a title names Final Fantasy. I mean the original game was basically Dungeons and Dragons with a flare of myhtological creatures.
FFIX is basically a almost plot device for plot device copy of Dragonball Z.
FFXI have extreme barrowings off of Everquest.
FFXII is a "I am your father" away from Star wars at times
Lol, I'm not talking about the IP itself. I don't think you can make them go pay royalities for the various mythologies they draw from. My point is the game mechanics are a bit different with every game. They re-use their own job system, but it's implemented differently every time. I never said they were totally original in every aspect of their games; no one is.

So them I'm guessing the next "Addon" will be the last and we wont get another update for 6+ months. I highly doubt people will continue to pay $9.99 for a single piece of armor I know I wont. Now I don't want XIV to be an updated version off FFXI but I also don't want a WoW clone if I wanted something like WoW I would go play WoW or one of these new MMO's which are pretty much all clones.

Well there really is only one award for a retail expansion too. Yes the add ons are short, but they are only $10 and compare that to a full retail expansion for $30. It isn't a bad deal over all. Short quick add on expansions should expand the life of FFXI longer than another full retail expansion where you expect so much more.

But with expansions there is new content such as zones, a bunch of equipment, possible new jobs and a whole bunch of other stuff while the addons only give missions that can be done in 2 days and your using old zones. I would rather pay $30 in one shot and get a ton of stuff rather then paying 3 payments of $10 and only a few things.
I am a huge fan of Square-Enix and FFXI (Have played since US launch and recently quit only a few months ago) and when they announced an untitled Square-Enix mmorpg i was incredibly excited wondering tons of things about it and couldn't wait for them to announce the title. When E3 came along and they showed the Final Fantasy XIV I was incredibly excited but I was dissapointed by one thing. I was dissapointed by the fact they were using old races and faces that look almost identical to those in FFXI. I know there is going to be many more options for character creation besides those but that isn't the point, it shows that they have the mindset of keeping many things similar to FFXI. The majority on this forum sound like they don't want anything different from FFXI except basically FFXI with nicer graphics. Don't get me wrong I love FFXI and feel tons of nostalgia towards but its had its time and now its time to move on. I've already played it to death and want a completely new experience. If I wanted a game identical to FFXI I would just play FFXI. Anybody else want a completely new experience ? because it seems like everybody here wants a FFXI-2.
Errrr?
They've explained why they're keeping the races similar - so that people coming over from FFXI can sorta "recreate" their characters over here, or at least something similar. To someone who's never played FFXI, it would be new anyway. Also I believe they've mentioned that there would be other races as well... could be mistaken on that though.
That said... the bit I highlighted in blue... Getting a bit carried away aren't we? Brand-new world, brand-new setting, different system of progress, expanded/changed job system... but just because they'll have similar races, it shows "they have the mindset of keeping many things similar"? Many? Really?
I think you need to relax a bit

Many of the things people loved and hated about FFXI, unfortunately go hand-in-hand. People hated forced grouping, but loved the community. It's because of the forced grouping that FFXI had the great community that it did. People hated the slow combat but loved the teamwork and skillchaining. It's because of the slow combat that people had to work as a team and perform skillchains. Can you imagine trying to skillchain while everyone in the party is spamming different skills?
Unfortunately, in recent times, skill-chains have gone by the wayside and people typically do just spam their weapon-skills anyway. At least in my experience.

Yeah, it sucks :-/. People don't want to have to coordinate anything... just whack-a-mole style DPS.

FFXI is over 8 years old... just let it go its over. Don't be one of the 4,000 people still playing Everquest a decade after it was on the shelf.
