Not only is the game a level/gear treadmill it actually encourages you to PvP LESS due to Abyss Point loss on death, and abyss points are used to purchase high end gear.
Risk in PvP, is amazing. It encourages more strategic group encounters and notblindless solo players like your used to in WoW, with 0 risk. Abyss points INCREASE the more you PVP, not sure why you would less if your goal is to gain more gear..
You pretty much have to be in an uber large big guild to have access to any of the open world raid bosses, or to survive being Ganked and losing your Abyss points continuously from large gank squads who travel in large packs to avoid losing Abyss points. Encounters like fortress and open world bosses encourages grouping in a MMO, who would have thought zomg. Is this a negative about the game?
For those in large PvP / Raid guilds who can keep their strength/safety in numbers it is going to be a great game... but for casual Joe or your "average" MMO gamer hahahahaah good luck. I guess that is what the free month is for. Guilds are capped at 90 to prevent zerging. Nothing is preventing the "average joe" from joining a guild/group! it an MMO after all! The game is 100% about gear and getting cool uber armors and weapons from hording abyss points through RvR sieges and also tagging and farming open world raid bosses. It's the worst parts of WoW's honor system mixed in with a very old school EQ style raid system.
No, it's 100% about having fun. The gear grind you had to endure in WoW has hampered your senses that a game can actually be about having fun... blame blizzard
Oh, and throw in the fact you lose Abyss points when you die and the gear treadmill/grind is even LONGER and more ardous then even WoW is, at least you get to keep your farmed points in WoW. risk/reward Open world PvP witch actually affects the world your playing in.... something id prefer over the instanced sideshow of WoW PVP. You choose?

Maybe I'm just a cynical old bastard, but either you are very much looking at "cup half full" or just buy into hype too much without actually thinking about how the game systems will play out.
-Capped at 90? Wow. 90 is a zerg dude.
-Fear of loss means you will never be "heroic" and try and win a hopeless situation, you will run/flee and rely 100% on strength in numbers and hit/run tactics. I call it "turtling" in PvP like when ranged classes move just out of range, move forward cast a few, run back to their healers, melee runs forwards, get's wtfpwnd, turns around runs back to healers.. it's sad and pathetic.
-Getting gear is fun. So is advancing a character or doing something cool. I love raiding, for example, it's not about the gear as much as it is the thrill of cooperation and teamwork paying off to accomplish a difficult task.
-I agree with the world effecting open world gameplay, but flipping ownership of different objectives ala WAR is not what I'm talking about. You want world effecting go play UO pre-Blackthorn (Factions PvP)
I just really want to know if the game is fun enough to play. I play these games for the adventure and character development, but most games these days lack the excitement adventure has to have, because everything is guided or set up so success is easily had. So do you feel excited when playing AION? Do you feel like you're chasing a carrot, or do you feel like you are in a real world? Is this one of those games where you run around a town, collect quests, and follow the markers to the objective, or is this one of those games where you have to think about where you're going, what you're going to do, and need at least basic map using skills? Is this game about the adventure, or about getting the next best item? I think you get where I'm going with this. I'm not looking for a fix, or a game to keep me distracted from life; I'm looking for a game that is full of unguided adventure with rewards to be had for those that take risks, and better rewards for those taking more risks. Basically what adventure is all about, I guess. Thanks

This pretty much sums up my views on what harsh death penalties do to pvp, whatever the "uber kids who never die in pvp" may like to think. Harsh death penalties and no viable PvP leveling are the two things I see as Aion's main weak spots. RvR my ass... the existing ruleset makes it sound more like G&G - Grind and Gank - to me... however we'll see... as always.

The mechanics in Aion work, the proof is in the pudding )) there are already 3.5 million asian players after only 8 months of release in only asia. The game is already a huge success despite what you say. A game like UO never came close to these numbers, it was a pure niche game for a select few hardcore players.....
FYI the Aion's CE has sold out in all major retail shops here in the west, so you may have a problem ordering

Sometimes too much MMO experience ends making yourself blind to new possibilities, and biased towards results. You may be right, you may be wrong, I won't be the one to say that as my experience is limited to the NA Betas. However I'm not some random unexperienced newbie on MMOs either, my first experience has been UO:T2A in 1999, and I know experience has blinded me... many times.
For the ones looking for a gank fest, a quick look at this table below will show how not rewarding it will be to do so (it doesn't account level differences) for those that seek higher rankings (if you want to be stronger, you want the Abyss skills and equipment). It won't be worth it, especially if in a group, as the number of AP earned gets divided evenly among group members. It's more rewarding to repel gank groups than making them. Plus if you are looking to gank people outside of the Abyss in settlement areas, after some kills you get debuffed and your position is broadcast to others and the ones killing you will earn a buff. I don't know the specifics about these (de)buffs though.

You're failing to see the whole picture, therefore your comparisions are badly theorycrafted. Most likely, you're missing information, you cant compare war and aion fortress sieges, for one, apples and oranges, it's a clear example of why theorycrafting must be done knowing all the elements and not only a few of them.

I have seen enough videos and the Abyss tutorial explaining how everything works and though yes it is different then WAR sieges (just as WAR orcs are different from WoW orcs for example) they seem very similar and I very easily see it becoming a game about flipping objectives for points...
...points used to buy gear. Awesome. that's never been done before. *cough*
Territorial control only matters when you care about the territories you are controlling and the faction/army/group you are controlling them for...
I have only ever seen this in UO Factions PvP system and DAoC.
And to some extent in WoW before battlegrounds during Xroads/Hillsbrad open world PvP.
Then we can talk about WAR/AoC who both had well over a million in the first month in EU/NA I think WAR even broke pre-order records but look what happened there.
WAR/AoC are still in a beta state a year after their releases, while Aion is currently more polished and stable than these 2 games combined. If you actuallyplayed Aion you would already know this information... This is a major difference here, do you understand it finally?

Polish isn't everything.
Even if the game runs great and exactly like it is suppose to, it doesn't mean that it will be a good game. As I have said yet I'll say AGAIN I think Aion is going to be a great game for a certain type of player.
Unfortunately there aren't that many of those in NA/EU but history has proven millions in Asia.
Do you understand finaly? As someone with an Aion avatar on these forums I figured you'd know a bit about Aion... my predictions for Aion in EU/NA will be correct, as they always are.
I just really want to know if the game is fun enough to play. I don't think this is the game for you. Look into Vanguard.
The "excitement" in this game will come from the PvP system, be it either trying to participate in it or trying to avoid it. Quests are pretty bland and the maps aren't particularly huge in comparison to some games. Exploration isn't really rewarded, nor encouraged... most of the leveling zones are pretty linear. There is a lot of content at endgame, and it will keep you busy for quite some time... but its a gear-grinder at the end of the day.
The crafting system is pretty solid, for whatever thats worth.
Oh, and throw in the fact you lose Abyss points when you die and the gear treadmill/grind is even LONGER and more ardous then even WoW is, at least you get to keep your farmed points in WoW.
This is, at the very core, what's wrong with WoWs honor system. There is absolutely no reward what-so-ever for the smart, skilled, individual player. Everyone eventually gets what they want, regardless of how absolutely horrible they are at the game. It promotes botting to an extreme extent. Nobody care's if they die, nobody cares if they win or lose, its a painfully boring and repetitive system.
And people only horde Abyss points when they get to the upper ranks. Before that its not so painful to lose points that it's prohibiting in PvP. Sure... you're not going to want to dive head-first into a group of enemies like your a damned idiot, but that's a good thing.

Yup, and the amount you lose does not even start to get scary till higher level in rank. Someone might lose AP, but they can always gain it back. Those that are afraid of losing progress not are fit to play competitive PvP.
Either way NCsoft made PvE content that reward AP it seems on the new update, so maybe this will not be too much of an issue after all, we'll see.

Apparently you should leave the genre for 2 or 3 decades, then there will be games like what you described when you come back.
Face reality first before asking for something, and Aion is not for you.
Other wise give me 80 million dollars and I'll make one for you because that is about how much it will cost to make something like that in mmorpg industry currently.
johnspartan some of your points are valid but some of them are off, I'll explain.
Trading keeps only works if the benefit for obtaining a keep is solely gaining possession of it. The contrary is true in that you gain buffs and benefits for each Keep you control. Owning a significant portion of keeps is very hard because the Balaur NPC faction will start targeting you. This will keep one side from dominating.
Also a risk vs reward pvp system is the best, however some people prefer it to be based on time spent like the old WoW system where it was basically a grind. The best players get rewarded, not necessarily the players with no life. If you look at the PvP reward/risk system you'll understand that eventually you'll need to kill 10x more people than you die to. You gain 120 when you kill a rank 9 (lowest rank) but lose 14k if you lose to him. Even to the point where if a top ranking player from one side duels a top ranking player from the other side they will most likely net a loss of AP. There won't be an AP inflation, not everyone will be equipped with the best Abyss gear, only the most skilled players will.
This game is becoming very casual friendly, they are adding many instances, if you look back at how WoW started you will realize Aion has started out much friendlier, with much more end game content. The Dreadgion instance is pure brilliance and has never been seen before as far as I know. A clash between a WoW Battlegrounds and a WoW Raid Instance? The videos are pure awesome! The strategies of such an instance are numerous and the fight will never be the same old formula. You can't write a walkthrough on how to go through an instance with a curveball PvP element.

Polish is not everything, but it's pretty up there. Heck, just look at the #1 MMO in this site, it doesn't get any more recycled than LOTRO, but it sure ran flawlessly when it launched... A game that is polished and runs smoothly has already won half the fight. Too bad developers don't seem to get it.
There is an easy option to find where you have to go on the map to complete quests, when you bring up your quest you can click on the location/npc/whatever and then click on "locate" and it will show you where to go,now no-one says you have to use this and I would imagine RP'ers wont use this tool.
This is only if you already have discovered the area in question and if the quest text says something about its whereabouts.
. I'm not looking for a fix, or a game to keep me distracted from life; I'm looking for a game that is full of unguided adventure with rewards to be had for those that take risks, and better rewards for those taking more risks. Basically what adventure is all about, I guess. Thanks
Me and my brother went in to an area where you are supposed to be grouped up with 5 others to be safe. He and I were sneaking around trying to find what we were looking for and when our luck was low, when we accidentally aggrod those guards running around , we took it upon ourselfes to survive against the odds - and boy was that exciting! it took time, skill and luck but we did it!

Polish is everything, WoW is (as of right now) the most polished game out there, it works on every facet, and maybe it doesn't have the best Story, the best PvM, the best PvP, the best crafting, hell even the best gameplay but it does everything so well and it all works so well that its easy to pickup and play, and that makes it really accessible to all types of players, hardcore or casual, and that leads to subs. For being around MMO's so long you think you'd know that. And to come on here and make comments about Aion off info and youtube videos lol, play the game for a respectable amount of time, try everything out, then make a judgement. Should mmorpg or gamespot put out the review before the game comes out? Lol, man get off your ego kick about how smart you are and the gamers will decide where Aion's fate lies, whether it be with WoW or Vanguard.

Your opinion is immaterial.
Not only is the game a level/gear treadmill it actually encourages you to PvP LESS due to Abyss Point loss on death, and abyss points are used to purchase high end gear.
You pretty much have to be in an uber large big guild to have access to any of the open world raid bosses, or to survive being Ganked and losing your Abyss points continuously from large gank squads who travel in large packs to avoid losing Abyss points.
Or you can hide from PvP and grind mobs and little daily quests in the Abyss for your Abyss points, which everyone will do while looking over their shoulder for Assassins at all times and looking to the sky for ranged classes like Ranger/Sorc.
For those in large PvP / Raid guilds who can keep their strength/safety in numbers it is going to be a great game... but for casual Joe or your "average" MMO gamer hahahahaah good luck. I guess that is what the free month is for.
The game is 100% about gear and getting cool uber armors and weapons from hording abyss points through RvR sieges and also tagging and farming open world raid bosses. It's the worst parts of WoW's honor system mixed in with a very old school EQ style raid system.

Oh, and throw in the fact you lose Abyss points when you die and the gear treadmill/grind is even LONGER and more ardous then even WoW is, at least you get to keep your farmed points in WoW.
This pretty much sums up my views on what harsh death penalties do to pvp, whatever the "uber kids who never die in pvp" may like to think. Harsh death penalties and no viable PvP leveling are the two things I see as Aion's main weak spots. RvR my ass... the existing ruleset makes it sound more like G&G - Grind and Gank - to me... however we'll see... as always.

Your opinion is immaterial.
WAR/AoC are still in a beta state a year after their releases, while Aion is currently more polished and stable than these 2 games combined. If you actually played Aion you would already know this information... This is a major difference here, do you understand it finally?
GW2 the future of MMO gaming
Very addictive

Polish isn't everything.
Even if the game runs great and exactly like it is suppose to, it doesn't mean that it will be a good game. As I have said yet I'll say AGAIN I think Aion is going to be a great game for a certain type of player.
Unfortunately there aren't that many of those in NA/EU but history has proven millions in Asia.
Do you understand finaly? As someone with an Aion avatar on these forums I figured you'd know a bit about Aion... my predictions for Aion in EU/NA will be correct, as they always are.

Nobody cares if they die. That leads to some very boring gameplay.

This is only if you already have discovered the area in question and if the quest text says something about its whereabouts.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
Liek o.O;; WTF!!
