In this latest video interview from Japanese magazine Famitsu, we learn quite a bit about Square Enix's upcoming sophomore entry to the MMOG scene, Final Fantasy XIV.
In the interview, the developers insist that they want to focus on character growth, and for players to enjoy the process, which is often tedious in most games. To that end, there will not be experience or levels in Final Fantasy XIV. This is a huge departure from Final Fantasy XI, where leveling is very much a focus. Instead of levels, players will grow naturally through their experiences.
Final Fantasy XIV will also expand on the Job System. The developers say they wish to utilize the job system from FFXI, but in addition they are putting a focus on weapons. This clarifies the significance of all the weapons present in the Final Fantasy XIV logo.
The game will take place in the region of "Eorzea", but the world itself is referred to as "Haiderin". Races will be familiar to players of Final Fantasy XI, but will likely go under different names, as well as receive other touch ups to distinguish them from 11.
Also, unlike FFXI, this time around solo play will be completely viable for all players. Group content will be well supported, but they do not want players who cannot or do not wish to find groups to feel "bored" so solo play is definitely in.
Surely by now you've heard that Uematsu will be scoring Final Fantasy XIV, but to what extent? A few tracks? Half? How about all of them? Yep. Nobuo Uematsu will fully score the Final Fantasy XIV soundtrack!

I actually wasn't interested in ff14 at all, but this all sounds great.
Interest in title... increasing...
Vegeta, what's the scouter say about his interest level? <.<
Anyways, its good to see new people getting interested, just hopefully the game doesn't end up attracting the crowd that prefers casual gaming...two hundred WoWs are enough.
did you even read the article before you posted that?
Just because developers want to attact casual gamers doesnt brand something WoWish
There will still be crowds of people who will play more then what you consider the casual gamer. And besides which those players are the bread and butter of most MMOGs these days, they turn the in game economy as well or better then other players in some cases

Did you even read my full post before replying? The idea of the post was that a certain type of people congregate to ultracasual MMOs like WoW, AoC, and such.

Im really finding it hard to contain myself.
Then don't do it <.< /opens box of Nixish
oh, and to gerudor..you've obviously never seen the ingame economy of WoW and compared it to FFXI. Gold sellers run rampant in one while the other is nearly 100% cleansed of rmt...I'll give ya a hint which of the 2 lacks rampant RMT...its the one without paid name changes, paid gender changes, and has the smaller playerbase.
This game is now on my game radar :O
Interesting. Far too vague and general to draw any conclusions, but I think I'll be keeping an eye on this. I do wonder what they mean by 'no levels/experiece' though. If at the end of the day, you're still whacking X number of mosnters to grow in power by Y amount, then it really doesn't matter what you call the numbers on the screen, but there are certainly ways to make it more fun than the usual grind, and I hope they succeed.
From my understanding you grow by accomplishments, completing quests almost title like, not sure though It does appeal to me if thats it. Also the job system sounds amazing, but we ll have to see. Need more info before I make a final judgemenet, but I could see myself really liking this game.
This entire thread gave me one huge nerdgasm. Final Fantasy for life.
Very interesting indeed, an AAA title trying a no-level approach.
This all sounds awesome and what I'm looking for except for the part where it's a Final Fantasy game.
QFT.
Whatever they call them, there will be something like levels, whether they are character levels, or skill levels.
Wait and see, True Believers.

Unlike everyone else, this video scared me to death.I have waited so long for another FFXI,but a nicer looking game with advancing mechanisms.Basically another FFXi but more in depth.
First of all,on the subject of solo play, there is NO way that can work ...EVER.You cannot have a game solo able ,it will remove group play altogether. What gets me is the way they worded group play,it sounds liek they are trying to fool some people here.
What i think will happen,is there will be solo stuff to do,but just like FFXI,you will need the best party,a lot of players to get the best rewards. How can they talk about considering massive battles, then claim a solo able game?IMO they are on total opposite sides of the spectrum,i think they are trying to go everywhere with this game, but going no where.
As for levels ,this one really baffles me.I am in the same boat as everyone else,we need more information. The only way i can see this working is by really boring me to death by forcing advancement through tasks/quests.
What i gather from this limited information video,is they are following the same route i have seen in their recent expansions, very little effort.By eliminating levels and experience, you actually eliminate a lot of work that goes into a game. Now they can make everyone the same,we all advance after we all do the exact same tasks or quests,,how lame.
As for the weapons, sure we all love weapons, but once again they talk of dumbing down combat by making weapons the sole factor.FFXI already had a great weapon game, allowing several choices but with penalties depending on class.
What this weapon idea smells of is a whole server full of Dancer/RDM,basically everyone will be a jack of all trades, all class definition will be lost, this again takes less effort to design.I have seen them taking this less effort approach now for the last few years, really sad that such a great game like FFXI,will now be dumbed down with a less effort replacement.
Ya i know it is very early, but there has been too many indications as to their direction,be it from last few expansions to the LAST REMNANT game, all showing me very little effort.I really get the feeling this game will be like the rest of the console efforts but not even as good as FFX,probably just as linear though, expect combat to incorporate "button mashing"as is the case in 90% of the series games.XY or Z or up/dwn/left/right will flash on screen and you will have to quickly smash buttons to complete combos ,,arcade style ..pfftt ,i really feel this is what we will get.
Oh forgot to mention,Renakai system??how will combat have anythign useful is players are going to be soloing?yep combat system also dumbed down to solo players...i get the feeling i will not enjoy the result of this effort.I feel this game wil lattract more NEW players to the FF series, because they wil lnot have understood the complexity that went into FFXI,they will see FFXIV as just a new game on the block and we all know every new game out attracts the spotlight.I stil lpray for the best, however i have a real gut feeling, this game will be far worse than FFXI,and my gut feeling is never wrong.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
The one thing that really worries me is the comment about weapons.
If its similar to the horrible system in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 then Im out. A system like that is not suitable to an MMO at all.
Need more info on this weapon system and fast.
Holy shit!!!!
Square is making a god damn No level, skillbased MMO.
I never in my life thought that these guys would make a sandboxish mmo.
this bastard is on my list.
Playing: EvE, Ryzom
They made too many comments like "we are looking into doing this" or "we may do this" and "we hope to do this" to make me think it's at a point for 2010 release. I highly doubt that will happen. Along with TOR it will probably be 2011 in my opinion.
That is exciting news, though some details would be nice.
Darkfall claimed no levels as well, but in reality you grind your skills to 25, then 50, etc, so it was more marketing hype than actuality.
If a real company like Square can pull it off though, there might be hope for sandbox mmo's after all.
That interview was pretty vague, but it seemed pretty intriguing to me.
...
This is where I draw the line: __________________.
You will always have levels.
Either a set level that raises everything at once when you hit a certain amount of Experience or raising seperate skills like Weapons armor and other abilities.
Its the same shit really just one give you more freedom in how you level in other games you just ding and thats it.
Playing: EvE, Ryzom
Because I've never seen NO LEVELS and NO EXPERIENCE work in an MMO, I'm kind of interested. I sure hope the user interface and the game itself are upgrades from the previous game. I bought it, installed it, hated it, shelved it. Anyway, it would be cool if the game actually had more appeal to it.
so...
I kinda don't like the sound of this, Neocron doesn't really have char levels you get stronger by using skills and well Neocron bombed horribly in general. Mind you it doesn't have the history Final fantasy does. (Kinda like why that piece of crap world of warcraft does well is probally 90% based on that its by blizzard). But I don't see how a mmorpg without levels will work. Only way I can see it is you have skills you raise, Hmm best example might be The Last Remnant, no char levels your stats go up over time as you fight. The problem with having no levels is this, say you wanna do a raid, without a level how do you know if the characters skills are adequite for the task? Unless they make some way you can look at other chars skill levels someone could just lie and end up being a burden to the raid/whatever group activity it is. We'll have to see how it pans out.
All I hope is the game is released in the US/Canada and japan etc all on the same date.
Then their PR rep did their job =D.
In all seriousness though, the levelless gameplay has always been bait on the line but no one ever actually delivers a truely levelless game. So go for it if they think FFXIV can do it but I'll always have my doubts
