More mobs are killed in Eve then players. Just a heads up.
Cool, I don't have a problem myself with killing mobs, I enjoy it. To me it's all in the presentation, options, and challenge of it. Using same 1-3 watered down moves over and over, with little crowd control, little aoe, and very little single-pulling capability, makes for a lousy grind to me.
And I could just as easily play a game that did not *require* me to kill anything to level. I could just level up after a certain amount of logged time. I know, the horror of leveling without doing anything but playing. The horror.
1-3 watered down moves over and over?....um if you played it past lvl 2(or at all) you'd know there is a TON of spells and combos in Aion. hell in 1.5 alone they added 90 some stigmas alone, can see here in the patch notes.
and not sure where you came up with everyone looking the same, Aion has one of the best customizations in any game. hell in the 1.5 alone the faces and hair they added is more than wow. well faces is more like triple what wow has and by triple i'm only talking the new ones added in 1.5. and you can even customize your armor and weapons skins after 30, and can change the colors from 1 on. and by skins i mean i could make my chanters staff look like a polearm if i wanted. when i found the vendor to do it, it was going to let me but my chanter was only 16.the original item (skin being used) is destroyed but i bought a white vendor one just to try it. can make your cloth look like plate ect ect. but yeah your right eveyone looks the same...

I played it to level 20+ on a gladiator and was using the same combo over and over. 3,3,3,4. 3,3,3,4. 3,3,3,4. That's about the extent of my button pushing. Chain skill 1, Chain skill 2, Chain skill 3, AOE. zzzzzz. Stigma? The stone I stick up my rear end, that gives me a weak skill that does hardly any more damage than my normal skill, that I can only use after I grind out 100 mobs almost? zzzzz.

About the character creation. The customization at creation isn't bad it's done above average, I will give it that, but it's not revolutionary and IMO isn't even as good as Perfect World, a F2P game mind you. I mean you can't make the character look the way you want it to. As far as I could tell I could not even change my eye color! Eye color was set depending on what face template you used! Give me a break...
The fact that you can dye armor or replace weapon/armor textures isn't anything new or revolutionary either. Dying armor has been around for at least 6 years back to POP era in EQ, and texture replacement I've seen in Runes of Magic. And let me just say about texture reeplacement. Having a wizard run around in plate armor and a two-handed sword is STUPID IMO and snaps you right out of the RPG element of the game.
And even with these features it doesn't save everyone of the same race from looking the same, when there is only two races, and limited armor and weapons and no fashion, and the wings look the same. You can't argue with me on this; I'm an artist, I have an eye for detail. When I look at Everquest or WOW, and I see humans, dwarves, gnomes, halflings, elves, half-elves, trolls, ogres, etc, etc, it looks cool and I can tell variety very easily. When every asmodian has white hair down their back, red eyes, clawed feet, black wings, lackluster armor and weapons, they all look the same to me.
I think all of us old schoolers are aware we are the minority, that's been expressed and understood for a while, and is the reason I joined this site. To voice my opinion and hopefully show that there is a strong following of classic MMORPG, that can definitely support development of one and will most assuredly make profit.
I understand that. I personally think a better way to go about things would be to find a game that you really care about that is in development and support it. Be an active member in their forums, write up articles about it and get people interested. It's amazing how much one person can do with word of mouth to get others interested in an otherwise indy product.
I don't strongly dislike Aion or WOW, I never cared for either game. To me they are just boring snorefests. I don't have anything against them. The only companies I have anything against are SOE and Ubisoft for outright lying to the players and destroying the time I invested on my characters in 2003 with the character transfers to new servers, which they stated many times would not happen.
Ok. I guess it just seemed like with you expressing your extreme dissatisfaction all the time that you had something really against the game, or those that enjoy it, or something. Like I said I can understand not liking a game or anything -- I don't think it really is helping just being overtly negative when you have other companies who do much, much worse. If anything you should at least be happy that they are releasing a polished game for once, and not a buggy turd in the box (Age of Conan).
If enough people voice their opinion we could possibly have a mainstream MMO again that is immersive, challenging, and creative. If all we do is remain quiet and gobble up the next snorefest...no...it's never going to change.
Like I said above, I would really find out an indie game that interests you and stick to it. I don't think developers are really going to notice some posts on MMORPG.com, although I do understand there are several developers who look here. However I do think that if an indy title did well for its self with the type of gameplay you are interested in that they would be more inclined to give it a try.
A lot of times fresh ideas do come from indy companies.
I do hope you understand why a lot of people are responding negatively towards you though. I know it gets annoying with the fanboys making a thousand threads about how amazing Aion is (and I love the game, but I'm not going to make another thread about it) but if anything it's just them being excited, haha. Then again those threads are pretty much asking to be critiqued.

i think you're talking about the class DP spell that builds up to be used after its charged thats not the Stigma. the Glad stigma (one of them) lets you Dual wield actually.its a drop ability, you socket it. i know the DW one you have to find and the other you got from the quest.i can't comment on the lack of skills for glads at 20 tho i never played one yet. i do know rangers was terrible from 10-16 nowhere near enough bow attacks. the quest stigma one would be this
Potential Health I
20% of your total health is recovered, and for 2 minutes the following is increased: total health by 20%, shield defense by 150 and parry by 100. Requires Stigma.
so i guess you didn't do the stigma quest? 22 is crippling cut wich drops frequiently i think i had like 3 on me at one point i just vendored.from the looks of your spell list at 22 you get 3 more attacks (not part of your skills you already have or chains). so when you say 20+ it would have to be 21 tops 22 all classes get alot of new abilities.
and when i mentioned the armor dyes and items skins...where did i asy they was revolutionary? never implied it, and listed them as things that would make OBVIOUS differences between you and other players
eye color change is in 1.2 china just got that patch yesterday. and it snaps you out of the rpg element because an armor wearing wizard isn't what is the norm for you?i have seen plate wearing casters in games before, SM instance in wow for example had plate wearing casters.
and you can make your character look like an elf, demon, dwarf, halfling (minus the hairy feet),gnome,Vah Shir ect ect if you wish. hell yesterday i was messing with the new customizations that china got and i made what looked like a 1/2 dwarf 1/2 dark elf. in 1.2 they also added the deform ability where you can control the arm and leg length, shoulder broadness. so i was able to give him a true dwarf build, shout thick legs, broad shoulders, and arms a lil longer than on a normal frame that size, dark elf skin tone with dark elf ears, and white eyes, thick dwarf beard braided with the metal band in the braid.
Dude, before you post actually KNOW what your talking about please... I didnt even hit level 20 and I can already tell half the stuff you say you dont actually know about.
Well I am all ears to hear your rebuttal? How do I not know about it when I have played it to level 20+ and you have not? Come with an argument and back it up or troll somewhere else -

Abyss610 covered it, no point in being redundant. And just because one has a level to say they have done something, does not mean the know everything they should at that point, or vice versa.

Complete waste of time, you have no AOE with dual wield, less damage and less crit. Gladiator is polearm with crit build or bust. And if the skills that use DP were not a stigma, then that is my bad. The only skills, stigmas, DP, whatever worth a damn to use is chain skill tree 1, chain skill tree 2, aoe, the ranged attack, and the taunt. I mean even the Charge ability was stupid. It's just a running skill, no attack or anything. zzz. Sorry I've had much more fun killing mobs in 10 other games off the top of my head than this game. That's me, you aren't changing my mind. You don't understand. It's not about plate wearing casters, if that's the way the game is designed. Like clerics with plate armor, shield, and warhammer. That's fine. It's when the game is designed for a class to only have the ability to wear cloth armor(wizard) and use staff, and this design concept and rpg element is essentially nullified and tossed out the window by having Leonidas the Wizard, with plate helm, no shirt, red cape, large shield, and scimitar. This is ridiculous looking. Funny for a while, but at the end of the day - ridiculous. I mean, you are admitting that you are trying to make an elf or a dwarf, when the game has two races that are neither elf nor dwarf and are pretty much human more than anything else. Not only that there is already much debate on the aionsource forums about all the "gnome" tiny characters running around to powergame pvp with smaller hitbox. I mean when this game goes live here you are going to see hundreds of gnomes running around. Tiny races like gnomes are balanced in other games with stat and armor limitations. In aion, nothing is stopping you from being a powergaming munchkin and rolling the smallest character possible to gain pvp advantage. I think it looks pretty silly.

False, dual swords increases the DPS and swords have bigger crit than polearms, plus, you get double the manastone slots. eye color change is in 1.2 china just got that patch yesterday. and it snaps you out of the rpg element because an armor wearing wizard isn't what is the norm for you?i have seen plate wearing casters in games before, SM instance in wow for example had plate wearing casters. i have no intention of changing anyones mind to play any game. you don't like it you don't like it. i just filled in the info where you had misleading/misinformed information. you first say everyone looks the same, i filled in that no, they don't at all. while you can look exactly like a dawrf, gnome, elf,Vah Shir ect ect you're TECHNICLY not and YOU don't think we should be givin the options to look other than just 2 races. you stressed the fact that you couldn't change eye color like it was HUGE. i blow that point out of the water, and you say nothing more about it like it wasn't a big deal anymore now that it can't be in your game breakin catagory. and what is "rediculous looking" to you, others obviously like how it looks, and are happy to be able to make their character how THEY want and not how the devs say they have to, like in other stale outdated mmos.
i honestly didn't think anyone could have a problem with being able to make your character look how ever they want.i mean maybe if we're lucky some glorious day some one will make a game with absolutely no character customizations. err wait thats what you originally had a problem with that everyone looked the same? or was it that we shouldn't have so many options when we make our guys because it "detracts from the RPG"?
this game IS designed so a caster can look like they're wearing plate, its only for looks its not a game breaking mechanic.it sounds more like you'd RATHER they do everything exactly the same as every other mmo out there.
and actually helmets have no requirements and do not fall into the cloth, leather, mail, and plate catagories. casters can wear a plate helm if they want WITHOUT changing the skins but they would be giving up caster stats to do so.
it seems you bring up points that you say are "problems" with the game, and when confronted with the facts you turn it to the complete opposite of what you originally post....i smell a troll..sorry all out of food for you.

False, the gear swapping feature only works for the same kind of armor/weapon, excepting for extendable ones. and you can make your character look like an elf, demon, dwarf, halfling (minus the hairy feet),gnome,Vah Shir ect ect if you wish. hell yesterday i was messing with the new customizations that china got and i made what looked like a 1/2 dwarf 1/2 dark elf. in 1.2 they also added the deform ability where you can control the arm and leg length, shoulder broadness. so i was able to give him a true dwarf build, shout thick legs, broad shoulders, and arms a lil longer than on a normal frame that size, dark elf skin tone with dark elf ears, and white eyes, thick dwarf beard braided with the metal band in the braid. You know...I was thinking...doesn't this detract from the RPG element of the game as well? False, the hit boxes are the same, therefore the pvp advantage argument is moot.
o ok thanks for the info on the skin swap, it didn't tell me i couldn't because of the missmatch between the staff and pole arm only that i wasn't high enough lvl to do it. if i had been high enough it wouldn't have told me that they didn't match.
Ephimero, swords do not have higher crit rate than polearms, they have higher accuracy, which is damn near worthless. And they don't do more dps, because you can't AOE with them. Gladiator is a polerarm crit build. End of story. This might change later in game, but for 1-25 i know for a fact polearm is the way to go, and I don't see that changing end game either. Losing AOE dmg hurts dps way too much.
And how the hell are you gonna say false, the gear swapping only works on same type armor or weapons. I never said you could do it in the first place, I said that the ability to do it is silly because I've already seen it in other games. I have no idea about the ability to swap textures in AION. I just know the ability to do so with disallowed armor and weapons is silly looking and takes away from the immersion in a fantasy world.
And for the last part. The hitboxes already have been proven to be bigger for larger characters on the forums. Larger characters have larger hitboxes. Smaller characters are harder to see, easier to hide in people. Now tell me every munchkin out there is not gonna powergame an ogre tank or a gnome wizard? Most squishies out there are gonna be a gnome, and most tanks out there are gonna be a hulk, thats the way munchkins play.
Nice job trolling though spread some more BS next time, too.
Originally posted by 1977 I'm not burnt out of the genre, I could play these games the rest of my life. I'm frustrated with the genre for constantly coming out with ez-mode snorefests. I don't care about the MMO genre, I care about MMORPG(the title of this site). The MMO genre might be developing multiple variations, but IMO the MMORPG genre is not. Once game companies like Sony identified that they had a major cash cow on their hands, the MMORPG genre has been diluted and watered down for the masses ever since to draw more and more subs. Everquest was probably to blame for the way this genre became, it did not start with WOW, but WOW made it institutionalized. There is no need to reinvent the wheel, the wheel was classic Everquest, UO, and DAOC. If you were playing an MMORPG at that time you were more than likely playing one of those three games and absolutely loving it. A lot of us are wanting these type of games again that we started with.
Once again this all boils down to the type of player you are. So I'm just curious , all sarcasm aside, what type of player are you 1977? It sounds like you don't want an ez-mode snorefest but what do you consider an ez-mode snorefest? Do you mean the leveling aspect... the combat aspect... etc?
Would DAOC not be considered an ez-mode snorefest or would it be? You can solo level a hib caster nuke stun nuke nuke nuke all the way to 50. (btw im just playing devil's advocate, or trying to . I mean I leveled 3-4 50's myself but after that I just power leveled them all, cause all I cared about was the pvp. The rest was a means to an end.
I mean personally how certain things are watered down but also hate how some are also. For example when it comes to ease of leveling, I don't mind an easy trip because I'm more concerned about PVP. But if I'm playing a game for PVE I do care if they water down end game bosses/content.
Also you mention WoW, I personally found many encounters to be quite difficult/hard to do in TBC. Was the lvling a snooze fest? You bet , but I don't think the main reason was cause it was very easy to do, it was just boring as hell running around solo. I leveled more characters in DAOC 1-50 legit than I had in WoW.
Anyway if you're looking for an epic/enganging challenge I think you should be entitled to it if that's what you like. Stuff like this makes me wonder why Aion or other types of mmos do not offer more types of servers. For example what if they had one server where it was even "harder/challenging" to level in and they had another server type where it was 2-3x easier to level in?
As far as what I enjoy and like in an MMO, I will one day post that here at MMORPG in general discussion, probably. It's too long to list to throw in to a thread about another game.
But what you said about "Iron Man" servers is an excellent idea, and I'm not sure why they haven't done that yet. In the same way they offer PVE/PVP servers, I think most MMORPG could benefit from one server at least dedicated to a different Iron Man ruleset. I'm not exactly sure if this would work or not but it sounds like it would. For example, they could take a WOW server and give you like x5 experience gain, but severe death penalty (delevel on death, permadeath, or some combination or another or so many lives). Basically stop with the hundreds of pvp/pve servers and actually come up with servers with different rulesets. I think that's a great idea, and could possibly make a lot of people happy. I never played WOW past level 20 although all my friends played it had characters in top pvp ranks. As soon as I saw how easy it was in WOW, and that it was a solo game, it immediately killed it for me. If WOW on release had a hardcore server, I might very well have played it. Everquest had PVE servers, a Roleplaying Server, a Premium server, and iir 3 different PVP servers with different rulesets. I think servers with different rulesets may very well solve a lot of the issues.
EDIT: btw i'm not saying I would play AION with an Iron Man server, Aion to me is just not at all what I am looking for, although WOW, yes, I thought WOW was a well done game, just way too easy and too solo based.
They have the same, 50 base crit, but you hit faster, getting bigger chance of crit per second. Plus, as I said, if we talk about abyss weapons, you can add 180 crit to a dual swords setup, while you can only add 90 to poles. How is it silly to like your level 40 armor looks more than the level 50 ones and swap them? And for the last part. The hitboxes already have been proven to be bigger for larger characters on the forums. Larger characters have larger hitboxes. Smaller characters are harder to see, easier to hide in people. Now tell me every munchkin out there is not gonna powergame an ogre tank or a gnome wizard? Most squishies out there are gonna be a gnome, and most tanks out there are gonna be a hulk, thats the way munchkins play. They have been proven to be almost the same. If tanks create huge chars and assassins create small ones, isn't that part of the strategy? Nice job trolling though spread some more BS next time, too. Quit projecting. The only one trolling here is you, im just informing the community so they don't listen to people like you, and this time, im bringing links, for your pleasure.
You said they have higher crit. They do not. You said they have more DPS. They do not. If they did I would have used dual wield and not polearm. Without using the aoe your dps drops significantly.
You aren't understanding what I am saying about the texture swapping. Swapping one sword texture for another is fine. Swapping a sword texture onto a staff is silly to me.
And your link to a video about the gnome characters does nothing but prove my point as well. "Almost" the same. Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
Strategically speaking a "gnome" (short) character would be helpful for a dps that doesn't want to get targeted easier. Still I've seen just as many giant characters who are mostly plate dps and such who do want to get targeted.
My assassin is average size >_>.
Dual swords were better pre 1.5 while polearm is undoubtedly the way to go post 1.5 for a gladiator.
Like you said OP this game just has something....special.
It's not one particular thing you can pinpoint but LOTS of good things. It does seem like a breath of fresh air after playing through slog like WAR and AOC.

I understand that. I personally think a better way to go about things would be to find a game that you really care about that is in development and support it. Be an active member in their forums, write up articles about it and get people interested. It's amazing how much one person can do with word of mouth to get others interested in an otherwise indy product.

Well I am all ears to hear your rebuttal? How do I not know about it when I have played it to level 20+ and you have not? Come with an argument and back it up or troll somewhere else -

Abyss610 covered it, no point in being redundant. And just because one has a level to say they have done something, does not mean the know everything they should at that point, or vice versa.
i have no intention of changing anyones mind to play any game. you don't like it you don't like it. i just filled in the info where you had misleading/misinformed information. you first say everyone looks the same, i filled in that no, they don't at all. while you can look exactly like a dawrf, gnome, elf,Vah Shir ect ect you're TECHNICLY not and YOU don't think we should be givin the options to look other than just 2 races. you stressed the fact that you couldn't change eye color like it was HUGE. i blow that point out of the water, and you say nothing more about it like it wasn't a big deal anymore now that it can't be in your game breakin catagory. and what is "rediculous looking" to you, others obviously like how it looks, and are happy to be able to make their character how THEY want and not how the devs say they have to, like in other stale outdated mmos.
i honestly didn't think anyone could have a problem with being able to make your character look how ever they want.i mean maybe if we're lucky some glorious day some one will make a game with absolutely no character customizations. err wait thats what you originally had a problem with that everyone looked the same? or was it that we shouldn't have so many options when we make our guys because it "detracts from the RPG"?
this game IS designed so a caster can look like they're wearing plate, its only for looks its not a game breaking mechanic.it sounds more like you'd RATHER they do everything exactly the same as every other mmo out there.
and actually helmets have no requirements and do not fall into the cloth, leather, mail, and plate catagories. casters can wear a plate helm if they want WITHOUT changing the skins but they would be giving up caster stats to do so.
it seems you bring up points that you say are "problems" with the game, and when confronted with the facts you turn it to the complete opposite of what you originally post....i smell a troll..sorry all out of food for you.
o ok thanks for the info on the skin swap, it didn't tell me i couldn't because of the missmatch between the staff and pole arm only that i wasn't high enough lvl to do it. if i had been high enough it wouldn't have told me that they didn't match.

Nice post Tenken.
Thanks drive through.
