Fuck no, they better think of something more original or at least something thats not so damn annoying. Its a game, dont put something that ruins the fun for most people.
Heh, so why even die. Hell just give us unlimited HP that way everyone can just have fun right? Well, maybe its just me, but it almost seems like that is pretty close to what your saying... what fun would that be... really?
I think exp loss at death is as lame as equipment deteriation. It doesn't make you a better player because it is so minimal that I can get it back in a matter of minutes. If you want a system that makes you a better player then add permadeath. Anything less and it means nothing.
Does that mean I'd play a game with permadeath? No
I think that an exp penality is just another timesink.
Oh and don't fool yourself. SE has made it pretty clear this game is aiming for a more casual audience, so I expect to see a lot more "modernization" with this game. All those outdated features most fans seem to enjoy so much like: lack of appearance custimization, lack of multiple forms of movement including jumping and swimming, additions of huge pointless timesinks (and I am not talking about grinding), and just lacking most features that make a game playable will likely be left out of Final Fantasy XIV.
SE is not trying to mimmick Final Fantasy XI in this game. Why? because Final Fantasy XI already exists. So if you are not looking for something different then just keep playing Final Fantasy XI.
At the moment though FFXIV is sounding kind of lame to me, but hopefully the class system will work out better then I am imagining it right now. Since FFXI had such a great class system.

Timesink? Err... An xp loss is intended to be a penalty - a deterrent to make death something to avoid.
It doesn't make you a better player? Really?
If you make a mistake that causes you or your party to die - especially when there's something to lose for it - you tend to not want to make that same mistake again, so you learn from it.... thus, you become a better player.
... or that's what *typically* happens.. I can't speak for you, though.
The idea of an xp penalty isn't about "how long it takes to get back" it's about not dying so much so you don't have to get it back at all.
