I am trying to describe one MUD game system, it is, so long (over 6 years, it has changed slightly over and over) best system I ever seen.
Game is baseing on Tolkine books. There are two sides - dark and light. Creating character one chooses race and stats, so, orcs for example can get better strengt and constitution though they will suck in intelligence and wisdom. Also, they get older, middle age is best for warriors, old age for mages. Ageing is depending of race.
If one dies mobdeath, they are in young age again, pvp doesn't affect it (idea - mobs are acting alwasy in same restriction and this is learnable, than players won't almost never act same way again). Dieing on mob gets also lost MUCH experince, around 1 level, than dieing in pvp gets down 1% xp of maximum amount you have.
Game is based though on levelling, kill amount of mounsters, get xp, kill players, get more xp. If you kill same monsters over and over again gets ones experinecing up down, if you have kill mob up to 255% of knowldege are than there is basically no xp. While in mid levels there is only chance pvp. Level range is 1-100. 21 is hero level, 26 legend level.
Dark side are for experienced player and has some restrictions on skill system. Dark side are missing some skills depending by race. If one levels, he gets around 10 skill points, depending on race, slightly more or less (8-11 points). So, getting skill points is up to 26th level, then every level after that is like 1/10 of level before 26. So, basically, one gets 26+(75/10)=33,5 levels. Also, skills slows up, so, one gets 1/10 of before skill points, if he got 10 in level, now beginning of 27 he gets 1, if he got 8, he will miss 2 of levels skill points.
Also, levelling up gives hitpoints, moves and mana. Ofcourse, after 26th, 1/10 of what got before. Numbers are relateively small (there are, as far as I know, been away sime time, 2 of level 100 players) and level 100 orc has around 600 hps, what is really much, than legend warrior has around 420 hps.
About skills, in deeper look, there are max amount of points in current skill of what you can advance, like 26 in 2 hand weapons. If one maximize 2h weapon skill and has best stats for it, and best race gets around 110% in current skill, this is for pure warrior. Every point after 100% depends MUCH. About pureness, EVERYONE can advance in any skill, but... mage skills(in cross race in same area as cleric skills) gets down his warrior and thief skill maximum precent. And vice versa. One can choose carefully and he will become good combat mage, or warriormage. Or pure warrior or pure mage.
ANYONE, if he is able to get best equipment and weaponry, can use it. Ofcourse, I will example, level 5, young age and down strength because of it (18-1=17str (18 is maximum for human)), lack of skill with best sword will do same damage than middle 2h sword and so on. Also, thieves are able to sneak aroung in plate mail, though, it will gets down their dodge rate (has maluses to it), than cloth gives bonuses to dodge, also plate gets dodge down because of weight, which (weight) affects also move cost.
It is VERY complex system, basing mostly in stats, which are, Strength, Constitution, Dexterity, Willpower, Wisdom and Intelligence. Every class pretty needs every stat for surviving, WIL for example affects some weaponry skills, maximum move points and maximum health points, alos move and health regeneration, resisting spells, there may more abilities for this stats which I do not know or can't remind.
Defence is baseing on parry+dodge, everyone gets those ones, shields just gives more parry. Attack is depending directly on weapon skill.
I hope that blabbering is helpful for someone of getting idea of nice game system, without pretty much of restrictions. Though it is MUD ofcourse, in adding it to MMORPG will change sytem and complex it.
Vella.. Muds might be too serious for most the peopel on this board.
Muds can have the best game play
Graphics aren't real nice. (text / ascii) But there are 1000s out there.

Geas was a mud I was playing.
Skill based MUD. Cna wear any weapon or amor.. or would take a skill to get good at it thought.
mmm
I guess level based MMORPG is all these people know really. so they accept it. and take it.
There are logic based fantasy games out there.
now I am not talking about REALISTIC fantasy, cause that is an oxymoron. Realistic and logic are two different things.
Realistic fantasy doens't excist. Logical fantasy CAN excist. TO be able to pick up any sword, or armor and wear it would be logical unless written as why you couldn't wear it. "strength requirement" or some other simple say to explain it.
Play Fable.. he could wield HUGE weapons.. but he would be SLOW, and drag it around.
It is possible. Just hasn't been done in a Famous MMO yet.
man just to let u know...its just a video game. If you dont like the leveling systems in them than make yur own or shut it. whats complaining about it gonna do? if they made it so u get exp when u fail everyone in the everygame would be lvl 100 and there would be no fun in the game. so im just sayin man u shouldnt complain about games being not realistic because it isnt real its a game.
Vella and Pangaea: I agree with you. Muds aren't very easy to play ("pick up stone" doesn't work, but "pick up rock does"?) but they do have very excellent originality.
dktannerdk: Just because it's a video game doesn't mean it can be illogical. The funnest (I know it's not a word) games usually have the most logic behind them. Imagine a game similar to the example I posted above. If you never knew what would happen next, how could you have fun?
Complaining will make it known. If nobody says what they think, nothing will ever change. If I express my opinion somewhere, people might hear it and take it to heart, in which case it would have an effect.
And there would too be fun in the game, and not everyone would be level 100. Make it so succeeding gives you 10 xp, but failing gives you 2. It still would pose a challenge.
Game designers are always bragging about the realistic qualities of their games. "Look at our models! They're just like real life! And check out the way the blood splatters on nearby objects! And do you see that moving fog!!!!" If they can make seemingly unimportant details extremely realistic, why can't that be applied to the level system?

I AM making my own game.
And again.. You are mentioning a LEVEL system. Once you are stuck in a Level based world people have a hard time letting go of that consept.
There ARE other ways to advance your characters than just LEVELS.
I think we are talking about LOGIC.. NOT REALISM
It is logical to pick up a sword and use it regardless of race and class. It isn't REAL to have Fireballs shoot out of fingers.. so yes.. we are on the same page.

Lol
I can smell the irony
If you want something what is realistic dont find it in games
Find it in real world, isnt real world realistic?
-
They dont have to make the game as realstic they can.
They try make it as fun they can
-
But yes you speak true partly
Cause im getting bored to that old same system where all MMORPGs are stuck...
Computer makes that you get no good new ideas
