I realise these are not directly comparable games, but being the big two MMOs due for imminent release, I thought I would throw in my 2c. Having tried both in Beta, and based on relatively early gameplay experience, all I can say (without breaking NDA) is that Champions knocks the socks off Aion for entertainment value. Why? Three reasons a) Customisation b) Travel Powers c) The sense of being badass from the get go. ....................... a) CO customisation wins on two levels. i)First, the character generator simply blows anything Aion can offer out of the water. Aion's is not bad as these things go, but CO really is stratospherically more varied. ii) The choice of powers on offer, the ability to mix and match, and find interesting combinations, offer a much more interesting early experience that Aion's one size fits all linear march up the tree. b) The travel powers are simply awesome. Anyone who played the CoX games knows this; the grand tradition continues, and it's just plain good fun. c) Aion has you using fairly limited powers gathering bananas and picking flowers for the first three hours. Yawn. CO - while not giving away any details - does a great job of making you feel like a mean supercharged mofo in a crazy world from the get-go.
And yet, Aion is being touted as the next big thing. So be it. I predict many Aion players getting bored, although the PVP system there has great potential, and I wish it the best. CO also has something against it - the instanced zones are not great for a sense of community. That said, it is just a great blast of good fun. I hope it gets what it deserves.
The MT is CO is the biggest turn off for me personally Mark, and thats a shame because I love superheroes and whatever as a genre. I know the debate about it all, and I don't mention it here to go over the same old points again and again (nothing anyone says is ever going to convince me that Pay to Achieve gaming is a good thing), but it IS a major barrier to me even trying this game out.
There is also the nagging doubt that CO looks, from what I have seen, to be all flash and bang with no substance. Just a cool looking mmo arcade game with a good character design system... Is there even basic crafting in this game? What else can i do except fight? I like something to do besides run missions constantly.
I was pretty scetical about Aion until pretty recently when I saw that zerg movie and how well the game handled thta many players on screen at once... I mean, I'm not a believer in the zerg, but that was pretty impressive and bodes well for mass battles in the abyss and found out that owning control points gains you access to dungeons etc. Can CO handle these kind of numbers at once? Is there any open zone meaningful PvP in CO even?
CO just looks very shallow to me, though I admit I havent read a stack about it in depth.
Not trolling, just lookin for honest info.

It's cool that it has crafting though, at least that will add some depth and maybe longevity to it. I actually wish the game well, I would love to see it fly after the failure of so many games recently. It's actaully getting a little embarassing to say that I play mmorpgs to my friends these days after the glut of turkeys we have seen. I still won't play because of personal issues with MT like I say, but if people don't mind paying the extra tarif to fulfil their 'need' for instant gratification then, hey, it's their dollar right?
I ll go with Aion too. CO is virtually a pure soloing game and VERY easy at that. Feels like some arcade console game on easy difficulty setting: colourful, fast-paced, but really just mashing 3 buttons even at higher levels if you picked a good build.
I find it hard to compare them as they are so different. Personally ive never been much of a comic or superhero person, im more interested in a good fantasy novel, a world where you can get lost in, not instant gratification with zomg powers.Maybe thats why i choose to pre order Aion. I havent played CO only Aion CB and im very happy with it. To me CO seems aimed at the kiddies market. Theres even a poll on the CO forum where a large majority of posters favour looks over gameplay!? Cmon do me a favour.
In most good fantasy novels, the main characters are usually a cut above the general populace with their zomg powers - be it touching the one source, attaining a magical ring, or being the bastard son of a god. The basic formula for a fantasy novel is the same whether the subjects are elves, superheroes, or space marines.
Not always, often its the common man or people without title or stature in the world are the ones that make the difference, not the princes or kings or Sers.
People against RMT makes me laughs. Maybe you should go over your precious Aion NCSoft Store and take a look at all the RMT there for their games. You will see that even NCSoft as RMT, the only thing is CO Cryptic is honest from the start and let us know, NCSoft usualy add this kind of styfflater when your already in the game.
Almost every major company those RMT, either MMO or single player games, it's the new business model, what you though it would be 15$ a month forever. They have to raise the price but who will do it first? That way they can raise the price withoput affecting everyone.
Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!

and as soon as they add it into Aion I will leave. I don't mean meta game services, but in game rewards (fluff or not) will be my signal to cancel. I personally don't get the whole ez mode instant gratification of pay to Achieve revenue models, but if you do, hey good luck. Like I say it's your dollar. It just removes basic fundemental point of a game to me and removes why I found these games great in the first place (achievement based gameplay in a social co-op environment).
If it ever gets to the point where there isnt a non MT game out there that I want to play I will happily say goodbye to the whole shebang and leave it to you guys that want what they are offering.
The fact that Aion isnt offering a Pay to Achieve option from the start, and shows no immediate sign of doing so, means that it gets my money. The fact that it seems heavier on co-op play is also a major sell to me, I'm not really a fan of solo focused games.

But there is always something to set them apart. Even in books that strive for "common man" greatness like The Legacy of Gird or the Deed of Paksenarrion, there is something to set apart the main characters (in those examples, Gird's greater size and strength and Paks natural fighting ability and leadership skills). But even those books get eclipsed by stories from Tolkien, Jordan, Feist, etc. and their stories are full of zomg powers.

That's the way I look at it. I'm only trying CO because I have fond memories of early CoH, I had a great group to play with, the launch was all but flawless (compared to most MMO launches), and the early game was fun. I have a feeling I may be disappointed, as one of those things drawing me to it simply won't be there (a good group) to start - but we'll see. I also have Fallen Earth pre ordered, but I may end up cancelling - I'm in beta and just can't seem to get into it despite a love for the "post apocalyptic" genre.
It will be pretty interesting to see how this all pans out.
As we have not played the final version to high enough level it's hard to say, but all reports indicate that reaching endgame in Aion is going to take a long time, and involve lots of grinding.
Discussion on the matter tend to devolve into "you are nuts to grind" vs "you are a whinging idiot who doesn't understand how cool it is to stand and grind the same mob for 20 hours"... but reports do tend to suggest a good 20-hour grind per level from 40-50.
By contrast, CO is easy accessible casual fun, but may not have the depth. That said, Cryptic have clearly thought about PVP - with duels, herogames (arena) and a pvp zone. Not as in-depth as Aion, but there is stuff to do - and I suspect they will continue to build on it.
The world is also more of a world, with locations, than CoX was. And unless you have superjumped or teleoprted or tunneled around an MMO, it's hard to comment on it - just take my word, it's very fun.
Will teh gameplay end up being shallow and repetitive? Dunno. Maybe. What I do know is you can simply respec and get a whole bunch of different powers if you get bored. And that is a very fun thing to have on offer.
honestly it think Champions is a supper hero game and alot of people ratehr play fantasy WoW sort of game..i personaly ***** hate clishe costumes and supper powers...ill stick with spells/magic thank u very mutch...to each his own obviosly. im trying to say u cant compare these 2 games its like comparing MO (o thats right Mortal Online its not even mentioned for some stupid reason) and Aion.
stop debating play what intrests u...i have my money on people care more for fantasy mmo setting (ok aion has no grind...at least it wont dut to fact that they are fixing it with more qests or whatnot...so less grind more stupid qests...i dont care grinding and stupid qests is like a path to the fun pvp system...whitch starts at lvl 25 or so...and thats like 4 days of casual play.
pick ure own stop arguing...CO is stupid with its money tho.....item shops and monthle fees lol...common.
Is there a source for this "no grind in Aion" thing? Last I heard, the game was quest heavy for the first @ 25 levels, but then each level after that relies more and more on grinding until late game it's pretty much all you are doing to level... Which is precisely why I'm avoiding it like the plague. Maybe some wiry Korean kid in Hong Kong likes to spend eight hours a day in the same spot killing the same thing over and over for that next elusive level, but it's not my thing. If they are indeed "fixing" it, what's the timeline? I'm guessing they aren't going to be able to populate that many quests before release?
Aion has been out already for--what?--maybe a year in Korea. Supposedly the Western launch will be with the latest patch from Korea, which is the big pve raid, pvp, and quest patch.
I would agree that on the surface, CO is more viscerally fun to play. However, since there's no death penalty really and the game is very solo friendly, I'd also say there's not much challenge either. So with CO, as with most games, ultimately it comes down to the end-game. Aion is built around its end-game (so I've read). Whereas CO is built around extremely customizable powers, costume, and character concepts; it's end-game is much less certain.
In fact, I think it would be fair to say that with Aion, it's all about the destination (heavy PvP), and with CO, it's all about the journey (with no real PvP).
so u are agreeing its like Co-Op game and not rely a MMO....this is like GW but more soloing making even less of an mmo. other then towns then..its not an mmo?? sorry explain what u rely mean i didnt play but from what i heard it sounds like an instance based game that lets u solo so GW without forcing a party.

hehe your probably right, it really comes down an argument of subjective taste. Personally, I enjoy sessions of grinding with a good group who I can have a laff with, others obviously hate it. The very word 'fun' is also subjective and is definable really only by ourselves.
Easy though? I don't want 'easy' in a game... I want challenge... This, alongside the seemingly shallow content, solo focused gameplay, and Pay to Achieve MT, is another strong reason I won't be playing this game.
This isnt a competition between the games though imo. The market is big enough to support both, but I can't help wanting Aion to be huge to support the sub revenue model further. Good luck to CO though.
Just to toss in my 2 cents, heres how I view the RMT in CO:
Buying the gamebox ~ Buying your car Paying a monthly fee ~ Putting gas in your car and paying the insurance Buying via RMT shop ~ Buying a new radio or getting a new paint job, etc
You dont expect the dealer to pay for your new radio whenever you want one, why is it such a big deal to pay a buck or two for something you want added to your game? Also, if you dont want to spend the money in the RMT, you dont have to! Theyve stated that any items available through the cash shop will be available to be earned in game as well. All they are doing with the RMT in that case is offering you a choice -- spend the time in game to get the item, or spend a little cash out of game to do it. Choice is never a bad thing, IMHO. Bitch and moan about it all you like, you can still play it as if there was no RMT shop present at all, simply by NOT USING IT. Now, if they start selling things there that ARENT available in game otherwise, then I will wholeheartedly agree that its not such a great idea, especially in any game that has any form of PvP.
No one is bitching or moaning about it. Debating an issue and someone having a differing opinion than yours does not equate to being a whiner sorry to burst your bubble. If you're fine with them going that route then all the more power to you. Those that pepper the co forum with this over and over you might be able to say that about but trying to say anyone that has an issue with it is simply bitching or moaning is just foolish.
I love it when people can't stand others have a different opinion than theirs and resort to petty insults. Not everyone wants to deal with a monthly subscription and an ongoing rmt model for items. If you're happy with that or it doesn't bother you then good for you.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

LOL. Ok. Me, I tend to love it when someone misses the entire point of a post to focus on the use of one or two words. Especially when they say petty insults are bad in one paragraph and have just inferred an insult in the previous paragraph. Ain't hypocrisy grand
I say 'bitching and moaning" because several of the posts I read earlier appeared to be just that to me. Perhaps I should have said whining, or just 'irrationally opposed to' or something more PC, but whatever.
Stopping here so we don't get dragged in (down) further. Feel free to continue on without me
I don't understand why people are concerned about big fights and PvP in Champions. The superhero genre isn't known for large-scale battles the way the sword-and-sorcery genre is. Being a game about superheroes, the characters shouldn't be trying to kill each other. I'd expect any PvP to take the form of friendly competitions. Though, once playable villains are added, I expect PvP to shift into high gear.
CO doesnt really have a "world". Its even more instanced than Age of Conan, more akin to Guild Wars than anything else, and every zone has zero connection to the next. You just teleport between smallish playfields, each with a certain theme, and a very low maximum number of players allowed per instance. A friend told me that no more than 25 players are in each instance for the first zone after the tutorial, and no triple-digit numbers anywhere at all.
Its the most disjuncted MMO world ever, doesnt feel nearly as coherent as even GW or AoC did.
You know, despite the general sense that Aion world pvp will be better, I think that the CO pvp may be more interesting - at least on a tactical level.
There will undoubtedly be pvp builds of the month, but the creation of interesting pvp teams will be very interesting - so many possibilities here, with so many interesting combinations, people will be theoracrafting til the cows come home.

If this turns out to be true when I play the beta coming up, I will yet again be disappointed at a new release, and will not be playing it. But we do not yet know if this is true for release or if its just a beta thing to test certain aspects of each zone or play area.

This is the trouble with NDAs. People trash talk the game, and those who know better don't dare explain why because of NDA issues. Suffice to say, there is at least one clear error in this statement.
You know, despite the general sense that Aion world pvp will be better, I think that the CO pvp may be more interesting - at least on a tactical level.
Maybe... I'm no expert, but I can't see all that much difference between the two right now tactically speaking tbh...
The fact that PvP in Aion has worthwhile objectives (both in the form of quests and the fact that holding forts opens content) to be achieved in an open zone draws me strongly to it. Does CO have these? Or are PvP scenarios just for fun? The Stronghold one where you play villians vs heroes looks like it could be neat for a run or two, but does it offer more then that for my character? Is it built similar to Warhammer in it's use of BGs?
Something about the thought of a legion of angels flying out to retake a fort because it has a good dungeon attached to it just really appeals right now
Not had a chance to try Champions yet but hoping too when it hits Open Beta.
Aion is so very polished and smooth and easy to get into. Lacks some complexity and very few classes are the bad points to me. Beautiful however would be an understatement for the looks of the world, wow.
I think its gonna come down to who wants fantasy and who wants super heroes. Both games are good, but its gonna come down to personal preference in story and setting.
this, and the fact that one has a heavy focus on PvP (Aion) and the other only tacks it on (CO, but this is expected)
personally i would MUCH rather have CO focus on PVE part of their game because when i play my superhero/villain all i want to do is help/beatup people and stop/help an evil mastermind.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

I already explained why a comparison like that doesn't make sense. I'm not going to repeat myself simply because you used a different example to try and make the same point. If I did that every time that happened on these forums I would have to keep a separate file just for copy and paste reasons.
The irony is while many other compaies have added items like this per user request or after a game launches because they simply didn't have time to add them in before launch it was never deemed as something that extra money should be charged for. About the only exception I know of to this was with CoX but from what I've seen that was a once in a blue moon type of bundle pack they would add and regardless that's one game. Now all of a sudden its supposedly commonplace and people are actually defending the company saying they should charge for these extra things or saying it doesn't matter anyway.
Who knows, maybe they're on the right path by doing this if people are so willing to spend extra money for things that other companies added for free? I still think its greedy and I'm not going to green light it but on the other hand I don't completely fault them for trying especially since some are so eager to let it go on.
If you really want to stick to you analogy, which doesn't make sense, then I suppose myself and others would purchase the car where all we have to worry about is paying for gas because the car we buy gives you a new radio, paint job, whatever for "free"-not really because that's part of why you pay the monthly fee but that's the gist of what those that aren't keen with this concept are saying.
I suppose next it'll be adding a gazebo in the backyard or getting extra cheese on your pepperoni pizza. At least the one poster related it to buying a collector's edition box. Still doesn't really translate but at least it has a bit of relevance unlike some of these other goofy analogies.

I dont see the sense in paying for a solo game.
Aion is just another asian grinder that is dressed up to not appear so. Most of the people testing have not really gotten high enough to realize it.
I highly doubt NCSoft will allocate enough resources to limit the bots, hence the game will go downhill fast.
So those trying out Aion enjoy the game while you can, your gameplay experience will deteriorate.
As to the super hero MMO, really not interested. Still waiting for a MMO that offers something new.
and as soon as they add it into Aion I will leave.

Champions Online does have crafting, three professions that cover the typical comic book hero things - Science, Arms, and Mystic.
bleh your reply beat my ninja edit for typos :P
It's cool that it has crafting though, at least that will add some depth and maybe longevity to it. I actually wish the game well, I would love to see it fly after the failure of so many games recently.
Good luck to CO though.
crap vs crap
It's a tie

Beautiful however would be an understatement for the looks of the world, wow.
this, and the fact that one has a heavy focus on PvP (Aion) and the other only tacks it on (CO, but this is expected)
personally i would MUCH rather have CO focus on PVE part of their game because when i play my superhero/villain all i want to do is help/beatup people and stop/help an evil mastermind.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

AION is taking me away from wow... Its a miracle. Did not try CO but like some people said its super hero VS fantasy... nothing else.
aion ftw cuz Champion online is just horrible and lags to much when i can run crysis on max......plus i never liked superheros games
