True this is open beta, but for many people this is a chance for Cryptic to make a first impression. Given the failure of so many recent MMO's, people are wary of any new release. Something as simple as the patcher failing is not a good sign for things to come. Anarchy Online was a good game, but it was crippled by a bad launch and never recovered it's reputation.
Bottom line, beta or not, this is not going to help sell boxes.

Meh, well heres the thing. its the second only comic game in MMO made by a trademark whom have already established themselves.
I just wish the starting area wasnt so noisy.
And do you guys honestly think your gonna wait 8 months for DCU to come out? Really? What? No.
MMO's come and go so fast these days that if the developer screws up their first impression they can never recover. In my opinion Cryptic has shot themselves in the foot and this game will end up like Vanguard, AoC, Warhammer, DDO and every other MMO since WoW.
Too bad for Cryptic that the MMO consumer doesn't put up with shit from developers anymore. If the game is a failure at the start people will never give it a second chance. CO will end up a niche game with a small playerbase and Cryptic will probably never release the game on consoles.
Imagine after years of hard work and millions of dollars spent developing this game a patcher is going to be the cause of it's downfall??????
I see other asked this question but this all looks rarther...uninformed. What will they be recovering from? The product is not released yet, this is an open beta stress test, you did not lose any subscription money yesterday, and they fixed it within the day. I played for quite some time last night.
What other MMOs go "so fast"? Every one that you mention is still going. Even Matrix online which just shut down ran for at least a couple of years. I only know of two games that came and went rather quickly that were P2P MMOs- Auto Assault and Tabula Rasa which you did not mention.
Vanguard- Running for a few years and has a stable and loyal population. While it failed for the devs I am guessing SOE is doing alright with it or they would close it like Matrix.
DDO- Still running and will probably be noted as one of the best F2P (item shop) game out there. This change in business model has appeared to stimulate the game
AOC- Going into year 2 and with major improvments, increasing population, and an expansion coming.
Warhammer- still running, yet to be seen if it will be a complete failure now that the dev has a new owner.
Vanguard and AOC failed much more severely POST LAUNCH and are still around.
Sorry to lash out but these threads irk me, they are nothing more than sky is falling, doom and gloom without a ton of fact.
Even as a beta there is still merit to worry...since the game is so close to release. If there are fundamental issues or any large scale network issues already, its an OBVIOUS indicator that they are likely to have even more problems when the game is open for larger scale consumption.
Don't assume the game will be identical, but don't blindly deny valid concern because it's beta. The better question is if the concerns are valid but nontheless patching issues were quite humorous to those with patience...one of the more goofy incidents i've seen in quite some time.
As for the sky is falling for CO...I'd say make a small tremor at best, doesnt do good things for the games pre-release morale - but may or may not perminently effect the game, as nobody will know till its out.
This is OPEN beta, which means that mostly everything should be done, all major problems fixed.
And it is a marketing tool, this is your free trial. Depending on whether I like the game in the next few weeks will determine if I'm going to buy it. Right now, it doesn't look good.

They are running, but with no where near the success they would have had with a good launch.
And WAR, which actually had a good release, is foundering quickly. They have already shut down 63 of its servers with only a handful left.
Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do. Benjamin Franklin
It leaves me to think of Auto Assault, although that game was not based on Car Wars - it drew upon that fanbase. It was doing well until it neared launch. Hopes were still high. It launched, and it felt like a single player game online.
The graphics leave me thinking of the game being Freedom Force 2.
Taking into account the complexity of the Hero system, the level of customization, and all the rest that it has provided over the years - I would simply rather not have my thoughts on Champions be tainted by the likes of this game.
It is wasted effort that could have been applied to updating CoX on so many levels.
Though, it is fun seeing some of the console babies crying about what happened with the X-Box 360 development.
The game will certainly recover from this, the bits that concern me?
- the communication practically died during this. Anyone that's played an MMO will know that games have problems/'unexpected downtime' - but you do expect someone to let you know what's going on. "come back tomorrow" would have been better received than absolutely nothing. Likewise never say "it's fixed" unless you've tested it, and clearly that testing wasn't possible on the live system.
- the lack of "solving the customer's problem" in favour of "solving the technical problem". A customer-focused answer is to put the files up on another server for direct download, the technical solution is work for 8 hours straight bashing on a keyboard. They did the second, when that really wasn't the sensible answer. (I hate to think of the stress on the people involved, which was completely pointless).
- there is a distinct impression that $$$ is being far too heavily emphasized, and the updated beta only being given to fileplanet is not helping in that area.
Open beta is not about finding bugs (there are ~2 weeks to a cast-in-stone release, and I suspect a long enough list of bugs already) - it's about advertising/word of mouth, selling pre-orders, and getting staff & systems ready for release. In all possible ways, this was a failure.
Long-term, you would have to say that the difficult' release (around the time of Aion, with another superhero MMO in development) has become a bit more difficult.
This is why the MMO community these days fail so hard they think that Open Beta is some freebie hand out (yes it is part of the marketting but only a person with NO real clue of what goes into games or realistic expectations expects beta to be perfect and the first month of a game to be perfect. WoW wasn't perfect and LOOK omg its just damn fine). Yes it is good for making an impression with the Open Beta...but how they handle problems like the patcher should be the bigger issue. Yes many of us missed the first day but its resolved I think that should be more important then OMG i had to patch. You get to keep that client at launch and any patches between now and then so its not ilke it'll be some mega crazed issue on launch day.
If WoW can overwhelmingly succeed despite its Open Beta and Launch horrors of 2 + hour wait times to even log in and patch or worse the fact it was almost impossible to get in and play during its first week I think Champsions will do just fine.
I mean how many of you negative freebie gimme hand out nancies actually have experienced real game horrors? A real game horror is the first week of WoW OB and its several months of insanity just to get on a server for the first few months. Obviously NOT many since your {Mod Edit: Language } crying over patcher issues which have now been resolved.

Wow talk about being on Crack, the OP is an idiot. People seem to think Open Beta's are a time to see the games first hand before they buy it. In reality Open Beta's are the final tests before the game goes live, this is a good stress test for there servers right now. They now know what to work on, specifically the patching system to begin with, and if they have that fixed by what most people call "Release day" then all will be good in the world.
Honestly I think the OP is just Trolling around looking to start some shit.
Even as a beta there is still merit to worry...since the game is so close to release. If there are fundamental issues or any large scale network issues already, its an OBVIOUS indicator that they are likely to have even more problems when the game is open for larger scale consumption. With all due respect, network issues are exactly what an open beta test is intended to test -- stress the network. Only so much can be simulated otherwise. In this case, 40,000 people hitting the system revealed that having the client call a web server to load a page was a mistake or an oversight -- a bottleneck was found and addressed. This beta might be seen as a marketing tool and free play time by the players but this is the period for optimization to occur.
If players are complaining and quitting on the game on the first day of open beta due to patch issues, then they were most likely not planning to play the game anyways. It was the first day of open beta. it's not unreasonable to think they'd have issues. Give them a couple of days to sort it out (they already have a temp solution with Fileplanet).
If this issue determines whether you plan to play the game or not, then let's be honest here: you never really had the intention of playing the game. Complaints such as this during beta are just excuses to convince yourself the game sucks which gives the individual some sort of justification of not playing it and even criticize it. Some people for some reason feel they need to bash whatever doesn't suit their tastes in order to feel justified with their decisions.
And if players make the choice not to try the game because of the initial patch issues, well, they probably would have found something else wrong with the game which would have been a deal breaker. Those who truly want to try the game and want to see if this is a game they are willing to invest time into, will show more patience.
Now if these issues were at launch, this would be a whole different discussion. But right now it is open beta and some bugs and problems are expected and even necessary.

Well 3 of my buddies that are online right now attempted to play in this beta to check it out and all 3 can't get past the patching. They aren't diehard fans which most wouldn't be so they don't read about workarounds. Two of them tried the patch put out by Cryptic and still no luck.. They have all deleted the game off the computer and moved on. I would say they are pretty average gamers.
I would say they are freeloaders looking for a free game handout, but that's just me.
I think many who play MMO's frequent sites and keep an eye on open beta's. No one is looking for a free game handout.. they want to check out the game to see if they want to spend 50$ on it and invest time to grow a character. MMO's are long term investments time wise. Are you serious? I can never tell on these boards any more. One bad day of patching in open beta and now people won't buy the game? The game isn't even released yet. You know, it was frustrating to me too. But the amount of useless QQ posts on their forums made it almost impossible to find any real info.

WELCOME TO MMO'S KID...
lol seriously what a retarded topic to start.
Well duh... of course the servers are going be packed and laggy for the first day or two as everyone downloads and logs in.
Man.. gone are the days of the oldskool gamer, now it's just a bunch of wow trolls, whiners and kids.
Get some patience, if your logging into a new mmo that's just been opened to the public expect the first 48 hours to be like this.
my web design: www.advancedws.com.au
There was an article about this on massively.com. People were really making a big issue out of it. It is still beta so who cares ?
They'll never recover! they lost one beta tester!
yikes!
doom is upon us.
Me, I forgive..I forgive..its awesome so far.
Maybe they will learn from this lesson and not let it happen again. If thats the case, it was a day well spent.
I myself do not worry about open beta, since I never play any.
The only thing I worry about is the release date, September 5th... a Saturday.
