PS3 Slim and current only 299$ Making HD console MMOs more affordable.

Sony unveils slimmer PS3: $300, lands in September

Hardly a surprise, but Sony got on stage today at GamesCom and confirmed what we've all known deep down in our hearts: the new, slimmer PS3 is really real. It'll be out in the first week of September (September 1 in North America and Europe, September 3 for Japan), and will retail for $300 (or 300 Euro, or 29,980 Yen). It's smaller and lighter, has a 120GB HDD, and packs "all the same features" of the regular PS3 while consuming 34 percent less power and taking up 32 percent less space. Existing PS3 SKUs have their prices dropped a hundie apiece tomorrow in anticipation, so be sure to grab a space heater while you've still got a shot -- though we're not sure why you'd pay $300 for an 80GB PS3 when you can wait a couple weeks and get 120GB in a cuter package.

Making MMOs on the console, in HD from your couch mush more affordable. Games like M.A.G and the new FF will be hotness on this. So much for anyone sitting on the fence between this and a Xbox (that i dont know of that has any MMO's for it)

Awesome news, I may finally give in and buy a PS3 then. You really can't go wrong for that price.  BLU-RAY +120gig HD+PS3?   Yummy. :)

They need to put out more games and just drop the price on the org. PS3.

It is not that size or power use that has kept me from buying it, it is the lack

    of good games.

Assassin's like to do it in the dark and from behind.

They did drop the price of the originals, as of today. There are a ton of good games out, and coming. Some like demon souls, and upcoming MMO's like M.A.G or Dust.

Meh i'll play fanboy for a sec. The 360 does have a MMO (FFXI) and I promis that FFXIV will be on there also. And i'm still not a fan of the PS3.

I'f I wanna play a MMO i'll do it on my comp, so it really comes down to RPG's and FPS's and the xbox wins out on both of those...

    Not so much.

Ps3 has more features, better hardware, is more powerful, and has a free network. There are at least 5 MMO's coming out for it.

Xbox may have a larger library, but that's only because its older. Price is no longer a reason not to buy. Just saying Sony is gearing up to big things currently, they just had a slow start up due to cost of the better hardware.

Meh we could agrue about this all day. I don't think that the PS3 has better hardware, I mean sure on paper it does. but out of both consoles (yes I've spent hundreds of hours on both) I don't really think that the PS3 has better graphics or is any faster. And for the free network, anyone who's used LIVE and then sonys network knows that LIVE is better, just for the pure fact that you get what you pay for.

the PS3 has also lost big titles to the xbox such as tekken, and the FF series. And the "more features" thing... Last time I checked sony didn't have. Achievments, Voice chat, friends list, custome sound track, netflix, Live Arcade (which has some AWSOME games) they even have XNA.....

So end story is, you live PS3, I like Xbox360 but as long as we both have great games to play who cares?

Unless Microsoft comes out with a better deal then I'll be trading in my Xbox 360 for a PS3 Slim.

I disagree that LIVE is better or that you really get what you pay for.

While Xbox live is much more accessible and has more features as far as communication is concerned, it all runs on a peer to peer connection. Sony on the other hand has dedicated servers for its first party games. That's why games such as Killzone 2 (32 players multiplayer) and Resistance 2 (60 players multiplayer) have more players possible. Ofcourse there is also MAG, with 256 players.

I disagree that you really get your moneys worth with Xbox Live. It's a good service, absolutely but it isn't worth 50$ a year. What exactly am I paying for? All connections are peer to peer. On top of that, there are also advertisement on the Xbox 360 dashboard.

The PS3 hasn't "lost" these big titles, they simply went multiplatform. The reason why you see more traditional sony franchises than microsoft franchises go multiplatform is because microsoft didn't have any big franchises in the first place. Well, except for Fable and Halo, which were both first party.

That's not to say that Microsoft has not lost exclusivity on some games. They lost exclusivity on Bioshock, Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2, Tales of vesperia and Eternal Sonata. I don't think Final Fantasy as a series is now fully multiplatform. Final Fantasy XIII is a Playstation 3 exclusive in Japan, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is exclusive to PS3 worldwide and Final Fantasy XIV is a Playstation 3 console exclusive. So, 1 out of 3 FF games on current gen consoles is avaible on the Xbox 360, and all of them on the PS3.

I dont see how this is big news at all. If I wanted a PS3 I would have gotten one regardless of a $100 price difference. I am with the poster who said its not the price thats the problem its the games. Xbox 360 just has the better games and everybody knows that Xbox Live is the better online service.

  • x_rast_xx_rast_x Member Posts: 745

If the PS3 ever gets a game I'm interested in, $300 isn't that bad at all.  After my 3rd 360 died on me I decided I was done with MS for this generation.  Besides all the good games for the 360 you can get on PC as well, where they look tons better and play just as well if you invest in a USB 360 controller.

Heck, if I was interested in Blu-Ray at all it'd be worth $300 just a Blu-Ray player.

  • bbethelbbethel Member UncommonPosts: 201

    I like my PS3.

I love my xbox 360. Even thought I have had 2 xboxs.

    I love my PC.

I would rather play any MMO on MY consoles. I don't care witch one or both. Just to up grade a video card to about what PS3 and Xbox has would cost about $300. If I can buy a console and play WoW, EQ2, WaR, Champion's, DC online, Aion ans so on. I would rather play them on my console. For me I play my consoles on a 60" HD TV. I play my PC on a 20" Monitor big difference.

If I were to pick witch console I would want to play an MMO on. I would want to play it on my Xbox 360. The biggest reason would be that Xbox live is far far superior to PSN. PSN is so much harder to use and nobody has a good connection. Also why does no body have a Mic on PSN. On Xbox live everybody has high speed Internet connection and everybody has a Mic. Witch makes games more fun when you can talk to others while you play.

I have no reason whatsoever to buy the slim PS3 or even an Xbox. $300 I would rather get a new graphics card. I'm really just into the RPG kind of games, and none out there is even good for both systems (at least not appealing to me). ANYTHING both consoles can do, a computer can do much better and then some. I got a great deal on the PS3 from my friend bought it for $200 with 6 games. Yet I havent touched it for 5 months and I bought it from him 8 months ago. Its just collecting dust really.

Not quite true anymore. The static hardware configuration, and as the PS3 (like the PS2) ages and developers learn more of its capability's things will shine.

Anyway, one of my main points was price is no longer a reason not to buy one of other consoles. Anything beyond that is your personal opinion, but i have a feeling that PS3 is gearing up for some major things here, especially in the MMO space.

And this price reduction will help that along.

    LOL!

Maybe you should learn to google a bit more, before making claims that the PS3 is more powerful and has better hardware then the XBOX360.

Plenty of tests have shown how big of a flop the PS3 really is.

The only thing the PS3 had going for is BluRay. But now the standard BluRay players have dropped in price so much, there goes PS3's last thing it had going for.

Ever wondered why more and more games come out for the XBOX360 and not for the PS3?  Google a bit and you will find out the shocking truth!

The fact that they come out with a new version of the PS3 with a HardDisk the same size the XBOX360 always had and they now drop the price to $300 is a mere act of desperation on Sony's behalf.

And now with Project Natal coming for the XBOX360... Sony is pissing their pants.

    Cheers

Existing PS3 SKUs have their prices dropped a hundie apiece tomorrow in anticipation, so be sure to grab a space heater while you've still got a shot -- though we're not sure why you'd pay $300 for an 80GB PS3 when you can wait a couple weeks and get 120GB in a cuter package.

Making MMOs on the console, in HD from your couch mush more affordable. Games like M.A.G and the new FF will be hotness on this. So much for anyone sitting on the fence between this and a Xbox (that i dont know of that has any MMO's for it)

    Cheers

And you would be wrong about hardware. There are more games for Xbox because its older, and runs windows. Nothing more.

The rest is just fanboi tripe.

No one cares about Natal except for soccer moms and preteen shoppers. Meanwhile Sony is designing for games.

I wish I could remember where I had just read this article. But it was about XBOX ,PS3 and MMO's ... developers where saying because of some of the hurdles of XBOX live that it will be easier to make MMO's for PS3 which suprised me because I always felt an XBOX was almost like a computer. I'd dig this article up...hell might have been on this site..but I am really sleepy atm.

Sorry I'm not dropping $300 on a system that is near the end of its life cycle. Consoles only get about 5 years of life and they are all still ridiculously high in price. I'm just not paying that much to play a bunch of rehashed unimagininative FPS'. The selection of games are weak as hell on this gen of consoles and they need to drop that price a lot lower before I'll buy any.
