Help me out- finding it hard to enjoy

dougmysticeydougmysticey Member Posts: 1,176

So this was a game i was interested. It looked like a real, honest to goodness fallout type MMORPG. I guess at its heart it is.

I really enjoyed the tutorial even though it crashed on me (still in beta, I know). Once I was out of the tutorial zone and picked my starting location I was kinda- well- lost.

Everything i encountered whooped my but. Firearms seemed near useless and I ran out of ammo but did not have enough coin to replace it (enemies dodge bullets better than NEO) .

I wandered around a collect quests to do this and that. Completed a few but found the game hard and was simply not having a ton of fun.

What am I missing? I am a vet of games, not just MMOs but FPS games too (LOVE L4D, Modern warfare, etc). I loved Fallout and still play it. I read about people enjoying the game but I am just not getting it and i want too.

I have really enjoyed both Champions Online and Aion. Still playing AOC right now but probably will stop when CO is released.

I had the exact same problem..

I was REALLY looking forward to this game. I love post-apocolyptic themed anything. Just couldn't get into it, tried many times.

There are two kinds of people in this world. People who pick their nose.. and liars.

Add me to the list of disappointed.  The tutorial was great... just like the OP said, the minute I got out into the starting area... it just lost it's appeal to me.

I have to add myself to those who both enjoy the Fallout Series of games and were disappointed in this game, something about it was just not enjoyable.

I really wanted it to be as a former SWG vet and fan of Post Apoc settings....

I'm not sure, your being a little vague. What town are you in? Most quests especially at lvl 1 and 2 reward with ammo. Thats every  starter town. Are you scaving? Always scavange in FE, it's the componants and the money you need to buy better things.

When the computer asked yout to choose a town did you start in combat, support or crafting?

Are your always having your food buffs up? Using the bandage skill?

When you went out to do a mission that might involve a lot of combat were you using the looking for team tab? Were you posting that you wanted a team in chat and the quest?

I always found a team fast that way.

Sorry not trying to grill you, just cant pinpoint whats not working for you as is. My 1st char was a wash. My second was a blast.

Dont use the zip guns at first, use your crossbow and melee.  One or the other until you can finesse the game with lighter weapons. Go for big hits and big slow damage at first.

look around town for the quests that give you recipe books, do them gather every chance you get, and get your weapons upgraded as soon as you can (either craft them yourself or gather stuff and sell it).  Until you get your weapons upgraded you will have trouble killing anything, and Shots don't miss, you do.

Use your starter range weapon (xbow) to pull, and switch to your melee weapon, the range 2 hand weapon, gives you a -20% on melee defense so it is important you switch.

The game takes some getting used to, but its not bad once you figure it out.  The crafting system rocks.  You don't have to craft in all trees, however learn armor and weapons so you can craft your own, it makes a huge difference.  This is not like most MMO's you out level your gear in about 3-5 levels, keep it up to your level and you will get it.  There are tons of quests around the starter towns (at least around midway) that get you started in crafting and gathering.  At later levels if you want to slack off of crafting, you start earning some decent cash and can buy most off of an auction house, or get someone to craft it for you.

Also you don't automatically get skill, you have to spend AP to advance your combat skills.  So when you craft that new sledge handle, makes sure you have kept your skill up so you can use it.

  • Ok, call me the screwball then.

I joined FE in Mid-Alpha back in December and it won me over for one big reason.

Nothing is dragging me by the short curly ones from one area to the next.

Just seems to me that these days most people think if someone doesn't tell you exactly what to do and where to go right after the turorial that the game sucks.

Walk around, talk to people, get the lay of the land.  If somebody needs to tell you where to go and how to do that...

I'm not saying that FE is the greatest thing since sliced bread.  It does however implement a component that a lot of recent MMO's haven't, and that would be your brain.

I hate to say it man, but you are falling into the casual crowd like I have. You don't notice it till it's too late. Before I played games like EQ, SWG. Loved the sandbox, loved extreme difficulty, radical inbalances, hard to get started into. But as of recent years, I tried to play EVE, which is all of those. And couldn't even scratch the surface. Then I tried Fallen Earth which is suprisingly similar to SWG in alot of ways. But I found myself completely lost in need of direction or a "Location I was SUPPOSED to be, doing something I was SUPPOSED to do"

Though to me I still find WoW TOO casual. But honestly, I found aion to be very fun and that will be my next long awaited MMO. The last mmo I truly had a affiliation with for "long term" was in fact WoW, back in 05 but I ended up quitting it and coming back like 5-6 times over the last few years after I hit 60.

I think casual isn't a bad direction, but I still like a mmo to have aspects that cater to the hardcore that is still left in all of us to an extent.

Absolutely. Amen.  Sing it out!  A little gumshoe work or at least (gasp) ask another player who's not in your guild.

If you use the leveling method of going from A to B to C, your going to pass up alot. The more missions you do, the more you will get out of the game. I have done 5 starter towns aleady and still in Sector 1 after 2 weeks. I may not have the levels like most, but I do have alot of money. I been using a melee template as well and find it more of a easy mode to me to kill things.

The game has a learning curve and as they stated, you gotta use the noggin especially making decesions that will transform your character. If your just leveling off of quests and movie up the levels, your going to miss alot and may even gimp your character.

If you like to craft and harvest, there are some materials found in the Sector 1PvP zone that will help your crafting skills, just beware, there are campers using rifles as arsenals. I was a victim.

If your more into streamlined linear mmorpgs where everyone is doing the same thing your doing to get to the next level and location fast, this game may not be for you.

Sometimes you just stop and smell the roses in this type of game and there is no need to race to level cap and do that mission asap, the game has more of a social enviroment, well at least to me it does.

Zoe, I'll tell you right now that it's not perfect.  However, if your looking for a game that boots you out of the cloning chamber and basicilly says "There is the world, have at it..." then you might find what your looking for with FE.

As a side note, I believe that "old SWG" feel comes from Tiggs :)

I'm all for an open world to explore, without being told what to do.  That's a major fun part of gaming.

The problem with FE is once I got into the world and experienced it for a few hours with quests, talking to NPC's and exploring.. it just didn't make me want to play it.  I'm not sure the setting is a good one for MMO's.  I absolutely love Fallout, but somehow FE falls short as an MMO.

Heck, you might be right about that. I played EQ for years and SWG pre NGE (even played a dancer) and enjoyed myself. I played EVE and liked it a lot but felt I just would not have the time to invest. I am really enjoying CO and Aion. Not sure if that fits with your theory here or not.

I have taken the advice, gone back and played though and have come to the conclusion that it is basically not just hard it is not intuitive and you do need to grind. Also, it appears crafting is of paramount importance to every character so it would be hard to decide not to craft.  I also don't like the pop up map as it is too small and I cannot seem to resize it (not the mini map).

Anyway, gave it a few more goes and will probably jump in a few more times to give it a fair shake but I am not liking like I thought I would.

EDIT: I do want to add the part of what is frustrating me is I see the potential and really like the setting.

Been playing for few days now and finding hard to enjoy also.

I hate the fact that you must do all the quests in this game, without doing so you will not get all the AP.

And as I understand it you will gimp your char pretty bad without the AP from quests.

I like to do quests when I feel like it and lvl by other means other times. Of course you can do those quests later i guess, but i don't think it's that much fun to do lvl 5 quests as lvl 10 for example.

I was hoping this game would have had more sandbox approach to lvl'ing and not the quest model that so many games use these days.

Combat is nice change tho and crafting is supposed to be pretty complex (have not tried myself yet).

Well have to keep testing more and see how it feels at higher lvl's.

  • blakavarblakavar Member Posts: 304

Lag you'll get the AP from killing Mobs. I've never heard you'll gimp yourself by skipping quest lines. It would be extremely hard not to mention unprofitable to try to hit every starter town for AP.

You'll be fine if you hit 2-3 and then move up the ladder.

I'm pretty sure I have seen AP given as quest reward. Hope I'm wrong then, that would change the game quite a lot for me.

Or for example if a quest says I get 2AP after finishing, it actually means the exp I get gives me the 2AP?

  • aleosaleos Member UncommonPosts: 1,943

if you suck at shooting you know switch to melee. Allways have your Map open when your traveling between towns if you want to get scrap. Learn the keybinds, learn to craft.

  • blakavarblakavar Member Posts: 304

No your right, you'll get extra AP as a reward on some quests, just you'll outlevel the rewards after a time. I think that there are 10-12 starter towns, you'll exceed the levels on some of those towns long before you complete all quest lines in all 12 towns (sorry forget how many there are). So its impossible to gimp yourself by skipping most.

By the time I was level 14 hitting starter towns for easy cash I think it was about all I got.  No extra AP and the xp if I got; if any, was like 20.

  • FedacorrFedacorr Member Posts: 45

You always get the AP any mission rewards, regardless of your level.   So, yes, you can gimp yourself if you don't visit all the towns, and do all the missions.

If' you're excessively high level for the planned mission level, you just get less cash and XP for it.

Going to be pretty boring gameplay then, most of the missions will always be about killing X number of something or picking up some Q item.

I just wonder how many of those you can do before you get bored with the game.

If your finding it hard to enjoy, you won't enjoy it.  This game is either love it or hate it.  There really is no grey area in this game, I hate to say it.  It will not be for everyone.  If you don't like it just press on to one of the other two coming out this month(if they are to your liking) or wait for something else.

That makes sense. i was hoping I was simply missing something.

Still, If I were to give some constructive feedback to the devs it would be to provide a little more guidance after the tutorial to get started. First impressions usually set the tone for the rest regardless of quality.
