AJ2MEAJ2ME Member Posts: 71

I guess worries about CO are unfounded, as the number of available lifetime subs and 6-month sub specials are now all sold out.

LOL ya.. dont believe alot of what your read on these forums ...There are some really good posters here, but you seem to get ALOT of fanboys here whom seem to come here to post negative about every game other than the one they are usually playing... And alot of times they seem to always come from one game in particular..Do I even need to say which game that one is.. Just give you a hint. They always say they hated the game that is being posted on and compare it to their other game which they are going to go back to. This game is known as the 800 lbs gorilla.. That I have a feeling is going to lose ALOT of weight in the next 2 years.

Do we even know what sold out means? does that mean 100 people bought it? 1000? 12000? Sold out can be used to give the illusion that many people were interested when it may be .01% of the projected game population.

I cannot even begin to express in words how BAD OF AN IDEA it is to buy a lifetime subscription on a game that ISN'T EVEN RELEASED YET. Maybe you played beta and enjoyed it there. But a LOT of things can change between beta and release (and a LOT usually do). Not all of those things are simple bug fixes. And I would also wait a few months after release anyway just to see what direction the devs decide to head in with their updates. They might have a different vision for CO than you do.

Edit: I plan on trying CO when it does come out, and from what I can tell right now, it doesn't look like a bad game. But the point is, I can't tell much right now. Mostly because a lot of things can change with an updatable MMO in the short-term as well as the long-term. Play the game. Observe the short-term changes and see if you can find a pattern, so you have a good idea of where the devs are heading with it. Don't throw all your money at a company just because they might potentially maybe have a chance at having an amazing game when they're done.

How the hell does an MMO sell out of subs? Do they just say "well, we have enough money, no need for more servers?

I think they have a GREAT  PR department, thats what I think. They actually made some people, numbers unknown, part with $200. That, Sir, is marketing genius!

Even if they only sold 5k lifetime subs, GENIUS.

BY the way, i like the game and im subbing to it. BUT $200 for a LIFETIME. LOL.

Listen there is a scale from caring deeply about gaming and being passionate about the MMORPG genre and being a greedy sellout trying to maximize cashflow from a product with no regards of your customers best interest.  Cryptic is at the far end of the greedy sellout scale moreso than almost any other developer in genre.  Just a warning.  They don't give a shit about you.

Sorry for the blank post above, was having technical issues with Firefox.

I agree. "Sold Out" means absolutely nothing. They set the limits (if they even had limits in advance) arbitrarily and to claim you are sold out of a what could easily have been a near limitless subscription plan is worthless marketing hype.

I'll bet that soon they will re-open the deal for a "very limited time" in hopes to hook people who were made to feel they somehow missed out on an opportunity of a lifetime.

You know, it's a reasonably fun game, but it really needed a few more months of development before launch. The game is far from polished and the fact that in addition to a plethora of bugs they are still adding/removing/changing powers, talents, upgrades and items the week before launch is proof of a pre-mature launch.

The people who bought the lifetime plans took one hell of a jump of faith. I hope it works out for them.

All this says is they've pissed off many of the fans they already had. They NEVER said the special subs were a limited number. Their ad said they would be offered until Sept. 1.

You'll see many pre-orders canceled because of this including mine.

It was a nice big FU to a closed beta tester with 2 pre-orders. I already had one registered with the offer but not the other since the closed beta carried over to open. Went in to add the key today and found my reason to cancel both. Gonna go dispute the charge now due to non-delivery of the product at the price I was promised on Aug 4.

With one swoop Cryptic lost $360 bucks just from me for 2 boxes 1 lifetime and 1 6 month.

I originally bought LoTRO on a lifetime sub, but changed my mind before the end of the first month so was able to knock it back to the 9.99/mo special.    No regrets, I quit the game a month later and have no desire to go back.

But, there are many people who really enjoy LoTRO and are glad they spent the money.

So, its a bit of a risk, but 200 bucks isn't a lot of cash for some folks, and worth it to them in the end if they really love the game.

This isn't some brand publisher btw, the dev's have a successful history so its not a huge risk, especially for those who enjoy the genre.

Yeah, CO lifetime subs being sold out seems more like a marketing gimmick to me, but hey, they're happy with their decision no matter how many their are.

I cannot possibly imagine buying a life time sub to anything with Bill Ropers name on.

Frankly I would have a hard enough time with anything with Cryptics name on.

No idea why they have stopped selling them.

I'd have thought about a lifetime sub for this game if they didn't have a previous track record. But they do. My sympathies to all those who shelled out $200.

I'm going to enjoy this game. Fast in, fast out.

Some people are just very ignorant....This conspiracy stuff cracks me up.  Listen Cryptic is a business...just like department stores, Food companies, Services, Medical industry, Goverments..when is this making money as a goal become something new for MMO's. You dont think WoW making what 165million a month is enough to keep up thier servers?  Yes the goal is to make money! Duh! The reason they put a limit on lifetimes is because they will actually start losing money after about a year.  Now I assume this game will last atleast a year, and id venture to say it will last as long as CoX.

    How the...

    Oh wait, that's Cryptic.

Do they seriously think their player base is dumb enough to believe subs can get "sold out"?

  • nennafirnennafir Member UncommonPosts: 313

It's a bad marketing move.  Just look over at the official forums and the near universally negative attitude there.

Also, it was unprofessional.  They post at 6:30 pm last night that there are a limited number and then today by noon say it is sold out.  Really amateur-ville...

I am impressed by the game but the higher-up administrative details are being handled amazingly badly.  Closed beta testing for only 2 days a week, virtually no real stress testing, and then these bizarre marketing moves.

  • LiddokunLiddokun Member UncommonPosts: 1,665

Judging from the response of the community manager Daeke they didn't know about the changes until last night (in fact many people who called up Cyprtic's billing department got a response that billing had no idea that there was a lifetime subscription limit). It was a surprise move by the higher ups (either from Cryptic/Marketing or from Atari) to limit the lifetime subscription.

Cryptic gets considerably more money from regular monthly subscribers.  So it makes perfect business sense for them to limit the amount of lifetime and/or extended subs.  Marketing ploy or not, they now how to maximize their profit.

This game can go is so many directions now, it is just ridiculous.  The engine is solid, and it runs wonderfully on most PC's it seems.  I was tempted to get lifetime, but only opted for 6.  This game rocks, and I can't wait until Thursday.

Now lets not spoil things for the crazies around here who for one reason or another loathe certain ppl/companies/products and just can't let go.

As for selling out of a item that is not tangible ie a subscription, well I would imagine the bean counters only allowed a certain amount of discount subscriptions over full paying ones to ensure a certain degree of healthy returns on the product, the money men have to set a limit otherwise you eat into your profit margins if your giving everyone a "Special" offer, plus it looks good when you tell everyone it's a "Limited" offer, ensures you get a nice queue of ppl.

I believe that there where only a few thousand discount subscriptions available anyway, when I last checked the website said 1000 lifetime and 500 6 monthly, then when i clicked for the 6 monthly to ensure i got a beta spot for STO I found it had all sold out, guess my dithering cost me, but unlike the ravings of one sad individual on teh CO website who is threatening legal actions for not being able to buy a Lifetime Sub, I put this down to me being too slow to take them up of their offer.

Well, apparently, it wasn't time-based. Like you, I also thought it was limited in quantity:

    500 Discounted 6 months Subs
