I guess the best food is McDonalds aswell since it's real popular. Cheap, fatty and bland.
Let's use this argument, since many DO use it to make a case for other MMOs besides WoW - AoC folks seem to have made this argument the most....
WoW, they say, is McDonalds - popular and cheap. "Other MMO" is a Steak House because it is........ what? Not popular because it is.....what? Not cheap?
Both subs cost the exact same - $15. So, let's say you have two items to eat - both cost the exact same amount. You give folks the choice - choose the best item to spend this amount of money on. The best hamburger, steak, car, whatever..... is the one folks purchase.....
WoW is the best. There really is not an argument here.
Yup, I tried all releases/betas, all sux. I am not an WoW funboy, but I start to think that nothing can beat WoW that year... There is NO MMORPG at the moment to give me same feeling what WoW have given me 5 years ago, NO ONE. I am still waiting... or maybe, I will come back to WoW.

But WOW has ZERO of the true MMO experiences that were evident in UO, EQ, and DAOC back in the day. While the actual comparison has flaws, the idea is easy to see and pointing out specific details is simply avoiding the argument. WoW is popular because it has mass market appeal. While many think that makes it "the best", in reality "the best" is up to the individual. I have found very few things that have mass market appeal to actually be the "best" at what they do. The music comparison is also used, seeing as how people like the Jonas Brothers, or Hannah Montana are immensely popular, but that doesn't prove they are the best musicians to ever exist.
Many things contribute to popularity, some of which have absolutely nothing to do with the product itself. Popularity is not necessarily indicative of it's quality, and doesn't make it "the best".

Analogies are rather lame, because they are often comparisons of products that share little similarities other than 1 aspect. Such as being popular in the case of "Wow is like ______"
McDonalds is popular, because it offers a better product, better service, more consistant experience than other fast food chains. It is also held to a higher standard by the general public, because people tend to target the market leader with unrealistic expectations. While the second and third place companies in the same market can create and sell whatever artery busting 1500 calorie fatburgers they wish... People tend to ignore anything but the market leader
The music analogies almost always center around entertainers (not artists) who are industry packaged products aimed at children and teenagers.
Notice you almost never see people comparing wow to google. Popular and just did searches better than the other companies that already owned the market.
In the end warcraft isn't the game that is best for everyone and no game ever will be. It is however a game that beat all the competition in a level playing field. It has no real significant advantage over any other game. Other games cannot even draw in the population of wow players that are burned out and desperate for a new mmo. That really tells a story of how much better wow is as a product. It is hard to play another game and get that same level of quality that wow offers.
Notice I didn't say the gameplay is the best of any on the market, but it sure is a contender.

This is very true. I am a long time MMO player but I find myself playing WoW again simply because the quality of the product is undeniable. Being able to look at WoW again after about 3 years of not playing the game and playing just about every other (western) MMO on the market, I can now look at WoW objectively and judge it by it's history, it's player retention and all around quality as well as my own experiences.
The thing is, I realized that the MMO I truly want to play hasn't been made yet. As a result of this realization, I am not some hyperventilating gamer forever lamenting over his/her disappointment over this MMO or that MMO. I've played them all. Going back to WoW is an educated choice.

You know what game is going to finally bring down WoW? Diablo 3. Yes, that's right. WoW has so much in common with Diablo 2 (and soon 3), that people will finally realize that WoW is in fact not an MMO at all, but instead nothing more than a series of instances and a pretty 3D chat room. Only then will we be able to finally take steps forward from the original MMOs.
Hack and Slash and random dungeons is what makes the Diablo series fun. Sometimes the mindless entertainment can be relaxing. Would it be as engaging as WoW? Probably not but it's great fun and that's what counts in entertainment.
human beings are always searching for the sensation they felt for there "Firsts". Confused yet ok ill give some examples like your First kiss, First time on an airplane, First time driving...etc (with a couple of exceptions). This is also the same for mmos and videogame. WoW was probably the first mmo for many so there looking for the same experience they felt, which unfortunatly will not happen again unless its a new type of mmo, for example an mmorpg/fps, a super hero mmo or something revolutionary like GW 2 -no quests just events system-.
but that dosent mean i think games like War or Aoc are good they still need alot of work.

I think a lot depends on your current opinion of WoW. Most people who play WoW say that all the content is at 80. However, having two (almost four) level 80s, I personally think that the best content is before 80. Although few admit it, I believe this is why alts are so commonplace. Some people spend hours a day in 25-man raids, and other people (myself included) want to enjoy 25-man raids, but can't. It sounds fun on paper, having to coordinate so many people. But the reality is that if you're in a good guild, the content becomes repetitive very quickly (few if any random elements); if you're in a lesser guild, the coordination aspect means waiting around for an hour just to get things started.
So as someone who enjoys WoW most when you're with other people, but not relying on other people, I feel that if Diablo 2 were brought up to today's level of technology it would be a far better game than WoW. D2 was an adrenaline rush. Gameplay was extremely simple, polished, and fast. There were many problems though, with hacking (primarily duping) being one at the forefront. I'm going to assume these problems are finally fixed in Diablo 3, but who knows?
I believe D3 has the potential to eat into a fairly large portion of the WoW playerbase, unless Blizzard strategically limits the scope of D3 to solve this conundrum. The two games certainly have a lot of overlap, and D3 might finally be the game that will make current WoW players wonder if the $15/mo they're spending is justified. Of course such games already exist (Guild Wars being one of them), but the future is definitely looking interesting for one-time-pay online roleplaying (Guild Wars 2, anyone?).
WoW is popular. Other games are not as popular. Popular isnt always the best. This is the 100000th thread of its kind. I beg a mod to lock this.
How hard is it to understand that when 5 to 7 million WESTERN people pay .... 180 dollar subscription a year just to play one game, it is MORE than popular ....
Since all the others with that western price tag hang there at 300K (eve) or WAY less then 200K (the rest)....
Based upon what evidence? And what you pull from your ass is not legally considered evidence.
.... It suffices to open the client and play to view the difference...
It begins with fast fluid control of the avatar and ends with the biggest gaming options offered. And the gap within these gaming options just widens with every quarter... no matter what the moaning means.
But apparently most of you kids don't have ANY clue what makes a game ... fun to play.
Where did you get your degree in 'funology'? This is so subjective a statement it belittles your entire argument.
------
I was never surprised, from the moment I sat foot in Azeroth until today, that the subscription difference is that big.
And with each passing patch, the gap just widens instead of getting smaller.
War and AoC (the latest Wow 'killers') now hoover at around 100K.
Prove it.
That's a loss of 700 K players in less than a year for each "killer".
How many people have tried wow and not subscribed. Please support your evidence.
I was not surprised.
Apparently you, adult, don't have ANY clue on how to express your opinion respectfully. Apparently you, adult, don't have ANY clue about what constitutes evidence as opposed to opinion (what fun is) or unsubstantiated rumor (current numbers for WAR/AoC).
Your entire argument is flawed.
IF WAR's retention rate and AoC's retention rate are indicative of the games quality, than you would necessarily need to prove that WoW's retention rate is much greater.
You can't do that however because no one has numbers on how many have tried WoW and not subscribed. We know that 750k people tried WAR and is far less than that now -how you arrived at under 100k is beyond me. Heck, its beyond your ability to prove. Therefore, you need to prove that WoW hasn't lost that many subs. What if you found that 30 to 40 million tried WoW and you are left with its current subscribing population.
Using your very own theory, this would prove that WoW has lost more potential subscribers than any other MMO, so when held to your WAR and AoC analogy, you prove only that WoW may be the biggest failure in mmo history.
But for you to prove me wrong, you'd have to have facts other than opinion.
Apparently as an adult, YOU were never taught how to recognize opinion, state yours respectfully and listen to others objectively.
This is why you fail at converting the hethens.
Stick to this and this alone:
"I believe that WoW is the highest quality game out there, I haven't had more fun in any other mmo. I encourage others to try it"
and you could add:
"This is why I think it is the highest quality....."
When you state your opinion as fact, when you use rumor and guessing as evidence, when your very theory has a flaw which could actually prove WoW is the worst (if we had all the facts about retention rate), then the ADULT berated children sounds more like an infant.
And guess what, I play WoW. Think it is the highest quality game. Think it is the most fun. I just understand you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Oh yeah, and I have a working knowledge of knowing when I can prove a point using actual evidence and when to state my point as my personal opinion because my evidence is shotty, incomplete or gossip/hearsay.
But how goes the crusade? How many converts have you had with your Spanish Inquisition tactics? You are trying to convince people to like WoW right? Has insulting them and making things up helped? Or are you just preaching to the choir, knowing you aren't changing anyones mind?

I totally agree but theres little point argueing with Zorndorf .This is a guy that i saw in one post say that the average age of a Warcraft player is 30 years old . He quotes xfire statistics like the were solid fact without realising the flaw in the arguement . If you disagree with some of what Blizzard do your instantly a WoWhater in his eyes . If anything its indicative of the immature attitude that puts me off the Warcraft community so much these days . Given the vast number of posts he places i dont think he can spend and awful lot of time actually playing WOW .
If WoWtards weren't so blinded by all the bright colors and moving objects (just like babies are), they'd see the game they're all addicted to is garbage; as much so as they claim every other game on the market is.

I know this is hard for you to understand so I will go slow.
If you dislike a game that does not automatically mean a game is garbage.
Tastes variey, understand this, get over it and grow up.

Ok, so Wow is McDonalds and there are "many games" that are just as good or better.
Please list them and tell why they are as good or better. Lets talk quality of product or are you going to be just another one line trash talker that calls wow mcdonalds, but never back up their claims of what makes all of these other unnamed mmos so much better.

What do you mean by "quality"? If you are talking bug free polish, I don't think there are any games that are as good as WoW. If you are talking quality of game mechanics, well that is a very broad topic. Unfortunately for the genre, there really aren't a lot of games that are better than WoW mechanic-wise, simply because every game that has come out in the last four or so years has attempted to mimic WoW mechanics. One game that I think is truly better than WoW is Guild Wars. The class/skill system is far superior to WoW's, and I find both the PvE and PvP content to be more entertaining and balanced. Guild Wars isn't about the grind.
Just my opinion though.

WOW has the sub numbers do to the fact it will run on a Walmart computer and anyone with $15 a month to spend can reach level cap and get all the shineys. Many non gamers play or have played WOW as well just for those reasons. Its about easy access, not about high quality.

Another tired and useless cliche....
yaaaaaaawn

More insults, you guys are sad.
I know this is hard for you to understand so I will go slow.
If you dislike a game that does not automatically mean a game is garbage.
Tastes variey, understand this, get over it and grow up.
Playing: WoW, EvE
Interested in: TOR, ER, GW2, WoD, Dust514

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
WOW has the sub numbers do to the fact it will run on a Walmart computer and anyone with $15 a month to spend can reach level cap and get all the shineys. Many non gamers play or have played WOW as well just for those reasons. Its about easy access, not about high quality.
