I'm seeing this guy not have any jump and getting stuck on invisible walls. I mean this would be a killer for me because trying to walk around the landscape and not being able to walk or jump down somewhere and being stopped by an artificial invisible wall. I mean it looks really hard to tell where you can or can't go.
Skip to 1:13 and you see what I mean it looks like a maze of where you can or can't go and it's really hard to tell.
That really puts me off right there.

I see what your talking about, I understand why it puts you off. but for me thats nothing big.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)

Similar to FFXI, once you play enough you start being able to tell which can be jumped and which can't. Even I can tell which someone is about to run into invisible wall and when it is possible to drop down. FFXI is not a game that let you jump around taking short cuts anyways, and FFXIV is likely the same way.
i dont think its a big deal right now. If you still see the same issues next year, then you may have a point. but the game is just in alpha now. no need for that to be a major concern yet.
No jumping, Better map design. Nuff said.
If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

Agreed...
One bother to me in FFXI was the fact that your character lacked the inability to simply jump. Not that it's all that big but just... I dunno it bothers me.
Strange how not being able to press space bar and have your character jump can be so disconcerting.
jumping is a different concern to me atm, but as for the invisible walls, the gc floor demo was an alpha version and they put invisible walls up around a small area to be demonstrated.
Just like not being able to swim in Aion is so disconcerting. It's not that these are big deals, but when you are so used to something it is strange for it to not be there, and for no seemingly good reason.

there was no jump in ffxi, so I'm sure a lot of people are used to it not being there. moot argument imo sorry.
At gamescom the square enix devs noted that they are thinking about adding jumping in the game. Don't think the game is ready yet there is a lot of work still being done I'm sure jumpin will be added.
Well you couldn't jump in 11, so I don't think they're terribly worried about it.
Or at least I don't think you could. It's been a year since I played. Can't remember.
Don't you just love it when people complain you can't jump.
I understand it becomes a problem when the map isn't designed well, but I do not think that jumping is a necessity when its not needed.
~Webby "This MMO needs more dead bird."
FFXI functioned very well without jumping. besides after playin many other mmos it does get a little odd when u constantly see players running around like they are turbo pressing the jump button *sigh* . If you can jump, cool, if not, I cant honestly see it breaking this game lol. Some cases a jump over a small rock or somethin would be nice but if the rest of the gameplay owns i could care less about jumping.
Waiting For: FF14,Guild Wars2

It may not be a game ending feature, but it is about time Square stepped up and added swimming and jumping,it is something that should be there no excuses.
It would be like saying remove all the trees and grass, they don't play a part in the game anyhow.
It's not lie they have 20 races, there is what? 6 so they have to make 6 jumping animations, not a big deal and that small effort i would expect.
The reason they don't add it is because it takes a lot more effort to check your map design for exploits. This is also why they allowed mobs to unrealistically run up the sides of walls,it is IMO poor design and like i said VERY unrealistic. They had limitations and excuses before with FFXI,but now is the time for no more excuses, the consoles are pretty good and the PC's are pretty good.Heck most of what we would expect was already in EQ1,so lets get the effort in there.
Swimming added a little more spook and flavor to a game,it was eerie to think you cross through that water and a sea serpent was waiting in there. In Eq2 they had all sorts of stuff in the water that could attack you,it adds to the game.
The biggest concern for myself,is that Square IMO is trying to build a cheaper game with less effort,so i would not hold our breath expecting anything upgraded. With the new engine they have added cinematic cut scenes, but swimming/jumping nothing ever mentioned,so it will not be there.
If you read the latest interview,Tanaka also speculates they are working hard to get this game out and it "IS"possible it may be out BEFORE 2010,so any talk about Alpha or major changes ,i highly doubt it,this game IMO is NEAR done.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
You don't know anything about their development costs and where their money is being implemented. There isn't jumping in FF games, so it's possible for there not to be in this FF game.
I encourage you to read this interview with Tanaka. killingifrit.com/forums/topic/179615-exclusive-interview-with-ffxiv-producer-hiromichi-tanaka-1/page__pid__3799795__st__0&#entry3799795
We entered a room with a big table (sort of a meeting room) and behind us there were a big LCD screen with the Final Fantasy XIV alpha on it.
This is from August 20th, I doubt it's moved from alpha to release candidate in 2 weeks.
If you read Tanaka's interview you'll also realize:
In the alpha I wasn't able to jump, will there be jumping in FFXIV? And swimming? Maybe even climbing?
Its going to be the same as in FFXI. So currently there will be no jumping. If its necessary we might add swimming and climbing in the future.

This shows you haven't been reading and are making up information you haven't heard, like "swimming/jumping nothing ever mentioned,so it will not be there."

Not really so moot. You migh want to consider not EVERYONE posting on this forum has only played just FFXI or is not coming directly from FFXI. Probably quite a few of us are coming from games we moved to after leaving FFXI. I for instance left FFXI 3 years ago and have jump to several games in that time.
Furthermore, being able to jump, swim, or fly in a MMO just goes to show a certain level of depth that the designers were dedicated into providing "IMO". So it is not necessarily just a "Oh I'm used to it" issue.
Invisible walls on the other hand is a different issue all together. At one view it's simply an aethetics or design preference. Either you want to show wide open spaces while not going to the trouble of making them accessable. OR you wall everything in with mountains and make everything nice and structured.
On the other view it can be seen as plain lazy or perhaps FFXIV is not yet to the point where all "zones" are completely fleshed out. Maybe FFXIV will be seamless this time and they haven't gotten to that next area thus the invisible wall.

It seems like we won't come to a consensus on the first part, but it's a better argument in terms of lack of depth or something than people being "used to it" for sure.
Anyway what I really want to comment on here is that they've already announced the entire world is seamless with no loads. It's in that article there in my last post, you should check it out. That's why the invisible walls were there. The game is absolutely in alpha, with beta a little while away as Tanaka said.
"When is the beta? Any more info?
We dont have any specific time at the moment. But this current version here at Gamescom is an alpha version. And before we start the beta we're going to have another version, a developer version, this time we're concentrating on guild leves, next time we're going to be concentrating on something else. When it's ready we'll start the beta version. And of course since we're going to launch the game in 2010 it should before that. The beta is not going to be in the far future *laughs* We want to do it as soon as possible.
I hope we'll see a beta before November or at least word of it. Probably press first and then public stress test."
Absolutely a close-by beta would be nice.. I'll have a new 42 flatscreen by then and FFXIV on PS3 will be all the sweeter.
I would not mind Jumping and swimming and climbing, as I do like the idea of gravity... I think its the idea that gravity actually exists in the game, that creates that depth people talk about. Your character has weight and it is being brought back to the ground. Swimming and climbing similarily bring you closer to the world.
I do remember reading a comment on ffxiv.com about a person not beng able to go in many different areas while alpha testing, including hitting invisible walls. This is because it was an alpha, they wanted to kep a lot of things under wrap, and some things weren't 100% yet. So I will wait till its released officially before worrying too much, and even then Ill prolly just be enjoying the game too much to care. I do look forward to it.
Still I wish Hiromachi (sp) Tanaka was more hands on in this games development....

I kinda wonder the same thing... Why is jumping *so* big a deal? If nothing in the game design warrants or requires it, then why is it such an utter requirement in order for some to be able to enjoy the rest of the game? I mean, I've seen a significant number of people consider it a "deal breaker" to not have a jump button... Doesn't matter what game it is, how much there is to do or how much they'd enjoy it otherwise... No jump button, and they're not playing it.
I mean, I play these games, too... I've played a number of them with jumping, and a number of them without it. I've never felt it was missing from those that didn't have it. Sure it takes getting used to going from one to the other... but it's not "game breaking".
I read some of the reasons people give for needing to have jumping for it to feel more "realistic" to them. They argue that since they can jump in real life, they should be able to jump in a game. To this I say okay... have jumping.. but if we're looking for realism, then let's have an endurance bar that drains every time you jump, so you can't jump more than, say, 3 times in rapid succession before having to let it refill. Not surprisingly, many I've said that to didn't like it... Suddenly "realism" isn't so important to them.
It's a rhetorical question, but I have to wonder why they'd oppose that? I mean, it's "realistic" to be able to jump, sure. But it's also realistic to wear yourself out by jumping repeatedly. Why would they welcome the former, but not the latter, when both are in the name of "realism"? Again, to me the reason is obvious...
Still on the "realism" kick... If you're going through a dangerous area in real life... some forest known to have wolves and other predators... Are you going to be jumping through the underbrush every 3 seconds, surely to attract unwanted attention? Wouldn't be very "realistic" would it? Yet, I can't begin to count how many MMOs I've played where people do just that. "Hey.. we're in the lair of the ultimate demon in this game world... There's creatures here who can kill us in 2 hits. We better be careful..." -hop-hop-hop-hop... See, to me *that's* extremely unrealistic, not to mention distracting.
and the cash shop selling asphalt..." - Mimzel on F2P/Cash Shops
Jump Endurance bar, it is perfect, though I would want it hidden, I dont need it cluttering the screen, but yah i would not mind it at all.
Wow one period in that whole "sentence" :P /tired

go buy a jump rope and do some cardio for 15 minutes.
then come back to this thread and tell me you want moar jumping please.
and when you do, Imma go necro bump the original "zomg no jamping" thread.
ready? ok goez!
Jumping to me is just like when people complain about lack of hair styles... it's nice I suppose but there are much more important things to deal with.
Well FFXI was my favorite game ever, and I loved the landscape style and this never was a big issue for me. Don't mind it at all.
Please name another Final Fantasy game that had jumping.
I don't really see it as that big of a deal. sure after playing many different games that have jump in them it is weird logging into FFXI, hitting space bar, and not jumping.
But I get used to it pretty quick(like 5-10mins?), it just isn't that big of a deal. What is great about it, is it doesn't look like im playing halo with all the spazzes jumping around the map.
nitpick more?
