Yes, they put in a patch right as they launched. Maybe not the best choice in terms of timing. The patch itself is relatively minor from my experience. I played after the patch and pretty much did all the same things that I'd done the day before the patch. Taking on multiple henchmen my level and higher, still no big deal. Taking on master and super villains of my level or higher, still about the same results. If they hadn't posted patch notes, I wouldn't have known anything had changed. I'm not sure where all the tears and drama is really coming from, but it's fun to read. Need popcorn though.
Nice to have that perspective. Doesn't make it true though. Anyone who has a character with Acrobatics can tell you, it's not all hunky dory. Typically, when you nerf two parent abilities by a fixed amount, the child ability takes it DOUBLED.
My problem with Cryptic derives from their timing. They sold people one type of game and, when they had their money, they flipped it. I don't care what the apologists will say, that's not the right way to do things (especially when you'll be selling a new product in 6-9 months). Yup, I'm a lifetime subscriber but I'm not canceling my sub because I didn't sign up for Champions Online on launch day. I signed up for Champions Online 2010, after Cryptic has had some time to figure out where they're going to position this game. But, STO is going to have to blow my freakin' socks off for me to consider this kind of commitment for that game. That's only due to the 'if they did it once, they'll do it again' factor.
Incidentally, I've been playing these games a LONG time (since Quantum Link, actually) but I can't fault anyone for buying a product (ANY product) and being upset when it doesn't work for them. I'm not giving MMOs a free pass. "Oh, it's okay, release the game in a barely playable state. It's fine! Really!" You will never have stable launches (or even attempts at stable launches) if the market accepts unstable/buggy ones. Refer to the term 'polish' as it relates to this genre. More of it is good (as the market has shown), less of it (or none at all) is bad (again, as the market has shown). If releasing early to recoup is no longer rewarded, fewer games will get made BUT the ones that are made will be of higher quality IMO.
But this is what you get when you mix kids with MMO's, or anything else for that matter.

In my opinion, the nerf was deeply needed - the game went from Hello Kitty Online to a decent game. Now Cryptic has stated they will offer free retcons for all toons created before the patch - perfect!

Darkfall's epic release, that was a real flamefest. This is smooth sailing right here.
I have to agree (for once) with Einstein (DF). It's kind of bad, but it's not that bad. Cryptic isn't completely without fault, either - they made some mistakes/unpopular changes, and they really pissed some people off.
Darkfall is a different case because, during the many years of development, the devs (and fans, who just multiplied the problem) proclaimed that it was the best thing since UO and/or sliced bread. The SECOND COMING of MMOs, the SAVIOR of all from the TYRANNY OF THE THEMEPARK! Yeah, well, when it didn't exactly turn out that way, it was only natural for people to be very disappointed. Thus all the flaming. Surprise, surprise, right? Most DF trolls are actually ex-fans who'd return to the game if it wasn't a FFA PvP gankfest with minimal sandbox elements... because what they were advertised was a sandbox, but that's not what they got.
Anyways, CO's launch has been pretty stable (except for that little patch fiasco) and the bashing hasn't been too bad.

Have to agree that the whine on new MMOs can be alittle to much sometimes even tho i dont think CO have had that much whine yet?
I can understand tho people that do whine cause we as the community have to really put down our feet here and tell the companys what we want, see to much crap mmos with to much potential getting thrown down the drain which is really sad, think most people that whine just have very high standards and I for one think we should be able to be able to demand atleast some kinda quality when a new release of an MMO is out. Concidering that its not really a "new" genre anymore, like it was 10+ years ago.
I feel like the MMO genre and the companys should have learn from their own and from others misstakes by now, shouldnt be that hard to make an MMO that will attract some people, guess its all about the development funding in the end, companys should just stop making MMOs if they dont know they have the funding from the beginning to make a complete product, just start out small and go bigger aslong as the game is complete in a sense at launch people will prolly give it a shot.
People who whine on lagg and unstable servers should just go to bed tho, that shit happens and will get fixed pretty fast, no point going emo after 1 day.
Playing: CO, C&C and WoW. Played: Tabula Rasa, AoC, War, Aion. Regret Playing: Hellgate: London, EVE.
I preordered the game, and I recieved it, but it's still sealed in it's box. I decided on the last minute that I will not play it right now, I never bashed the game, nor will I bash it now, I will just tell you why I will not play it right away.
I play the last phase of CB or OB or whatever they wanted to call it, and in 5 days, I was lvl 40 and had nothing else to do. To me, when I play an mmorpg, I want it to last, I am not asking for the game to last for a year or two, but at least as my first playthrough, let me have some degree of difficulty and maybe achieve max lvl in a month or two instead.
And that to me, was the worst thing the devs did to the game, having content that you go through too fast. Other than that, the game is really good.
Just as the head start started they rolled out a huge nerf patch without testing it on testserver
That screwed up things more.
We had no problems in closed and open beta .When these untested patches were forced in early in head start thats where the chaos started
In communication department these guys are tryingghard to live to the reputaion GOA had or Drfall online had during launch.
Its 4 days now we have put in our head start key and retail key in , We cannot play , nothing official is being mentioned
Players are themselves trying to figure out solution likje grandma receipes and in some cases for some people it is helping.
Which idiot deicides 1 day before launch to shove in a big nerf bat patch that has not been tested on the server nor by players.
Early on people where complaing of the nerf but that has become so minute compare , cannot log in , Server down, Game freezes , game crashes , version mistmatch , patch not working , patch stuck at 22% , server not responding , characters stuck , cant see any characters etc
Please dont give us excuses that MMO launches are filled with trouble crap .What are these guys learnt from other MMO mistakes nothing

Lol, wow where to start.
First off, no I don't give a damn about any of the work game devs have done, and news flash, they haven't done it 'for us all' unless it's an open-source game. I work just as hard, if not harder, than any game dev, so they don't automatically get my respect simply by shipping a product. They have to earn it like everyone else.
Secondly, not sure who this imperfect 'our GOD' is that you're referring to, but I highly doubt you speak for everyone on this forum where religious matters are concerned.
Finally, as others have said, if you think CO is a bitch of a release, clearly you haven't been around for some of the true clusterfuck whine-fests like AoC, SWG, WoW, and others.
Anyhow, asking for people not to cry over an mmorpg release is an exercise in futility. Thank you for the laugh though.
Its launch time, people always cry. There are always a laundry list of things to immediately fix post launch on any game. Honestly, its better they fix it AT launch, rather than allowing the meat and potatoes of their sub list (the players who were NOT in the very tiny pool of beta players) touch the overpowered and THEn pull the rug out.
That said, these are changes that should have been made IN beta. Thats what the hell Beta is for, to address MASSIVE gameplay issues. Such massive nerfing, while incredibly needed, should have never, I repeat NEVER, been allowed to make it anywhere NEAR this long. It should have been taken care of progressively across the beta. It appears as though they just compliled a list of changes and then popped em all the minute they got a free second. Thats tacky, and unprofessional.
This won't affect my choice to buy and play the game. BUT, I will say that a decent team of developers should have the game past such changes the day before launch. Under no circumstance should a professional team of, not only programmers and testers, but also PR managers and business leaders, EVER have allowed their game to be in such a position. Its terrible for business and is probably gonna cost them HEAVY in initial game buzz. The early days always decide the strength of an mmo...because having those early players say GOOD things is the BEST way to draw players. Each player has at least 5 friends they talk to...and each of those friends has 5 more. A single good opening day can mean an additional 30-500 players PER PLAYER that are brought in.
By dropping that ball...I can almost promise you this game will never see any more greatness than CoH did. You CANNOT screw up those first weeks, they are your lifeline for free and powerful marketing. Im still gonna play it, and probably love it. I'm just sad they didn't have the brains to realize how stupid this was.
We get very vocal about the games we like, and just as vocal about the ones we do not like. It is this whole big thing.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007

And yes I was sir, check my post history on SWG, MxO and AoC , just to let you know it is the same as this thread. And yes I understand we paid for CO or any other new release MMO back in the day, the point is there should not be whining and bashing on games that just released especially MMORPG. And to just bitch and moan on a MMORPG that you know patching and updates will come and fix the game play issues so, it is not needed for me or other people that understand this thread.

Good lord, I expected halfway through to Read "LEAVE CHAMPION'S ONLINE ALONE!!!! I'M SERIOUS, IF YOU HAVE PROBLEM WITH CHAMPION'S ONLINE YOU COME TO ME!"
We care about the hard work that goes into games, we really do. All of us. We also know when all that hard work has made a steaming pile, and when its made a marble statue. Now I don't think this particular game is a steaming pile, but we're all a little too informed on the genre as a whole to see this as a marble statue either, its average for the genre and they need to be happy with that. (you should too)

What do you expect? People always do this when there are issues. Hell, I've seen people raise a shitstorm when they're playing, using, or watching something for free so of course when some spend money and things go awry they're going to get worked up.
Why get worked up yourself over something you'll never change? All this topic does is make some nice flame bait.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Really? If you are going to start an anti-bashing campaign, the least you can do is use spell check correctly to protect your own interests and avoid delegitimizing of your statement. Have you heard of freedom of speech? Let the whiners complain and pursuit happiness, the rest of us can use the ignore command. Complaining about complainers is a futile exercise and lengthens the threads with arguments to the point of incomprehension to what the subject was about to begin with.

You know what? yes i do expect a game to come out with Zero flaws, just because every MMO does come out like crap fest over the years and now seems to be a community and industry accepted standard doesnt mean its correct, it just means we get taken for fools while paying for subs 6mnths to a year before it should have been actually released.
No one expect a MMO to launch without problem, tech or otherwise, however, you also DONT create problem on the very launch day with no warning, especially screwing people who had headstarted, without that huge bomb of an update that completely changed gameplay for many character, I doubt the bash would be this bad.

I have no complaint about the launch of the game. I have a compaint with the game.
It is boring, repetitive, WoW quest inspired, and lack of content.
People come here for everyone's opinion of the game, not just the glowing ones. I have ever right to post how I feel about the game.
The right to say you dont like a game you paid for, or you got disappointed by a game you were waiting for, is a basic right on this forum I guess.
That being said CO is not that bad in my opinion. It's not that good either. As someone just said, I dont have any problem with the launch. The balancing patch just one day before the release is not that a clever move for sure : I've been in the closed beta for a long time, and everyone kept telling them there was a big balance problem between different sets, and some passive were overpowered compared to others... It's a puzzle to me why they decided to change everything just one day before the release, it's not like they didnt know before. But even that... well it's the common MMO stuff : buffs, nerfs, patchs... that cant always make everyone happy.
My main issue is rather the game doesnt feel that fun for my taste (just my opinion, I'm happy some ppl have fun with it). The poster above me sumed up precisely what I dont really like about it, for the most part. I just want to add also that the teamplay is a big let down in this game, with everyone playing self sufficient toons, there is no need for teaming and no spot for support toons, at least from what I experienced.

This is what we do.
WTF? No subscription fee?
Lol, wow where to start.

(you should too)
My Thoughts on Content Locust

I don't know your posting history, but you have made yourself a laughing stock with this post.
The pot calling the kettle black.
I'm not a grammar nazi but I think a part of me just died after reading that.
