The memory leak issues were fixed during the autumn of 2008.

Population and community is heavily dependant on which server you chose. If you choose  the pure PvP servers, be prepared to be ganked a lot and hear quite a bit of trash talk. If you can't stand such things, go for a PvE server. You can still PvP on PvE servers in designated areas and in mini games. I don't play on US servers, but from what I've heard, Tyrrany (pvp) and Set/Wiccana (pve) are the most populated servers.

game's so crappy buggy and badly done that just after 1 year its already dying., move along.. pick something with a longer expected lifespan :)

my advice anyway.. pretty sure AoC diminute fanbase will try to convince you otherwise.

Aion, AoC, AC, AO, DDO, Eve, Eq2, GW, MW3, L1&2, RF, RIFT, SWG, SWTOR, TR, UO, WOW, WAR

I'm curious too. How long it takes to play till level 20? I mean, how many hours of fun can I expect before it gets boring and I start looking for a new game?

I played the game for 1 month as a subscriber and about 2 months on trial accounts.

I played it for PVP exclusively and I had lots of fun. Can't really comment on other aspects of the game but PVE was boring for me as in any other game.

The game suffers the most from disgruntled players who got disappointed due their fall to hype and/or having exaggerated expectations giving the game bad reputation.

If you enter the game with open mind, you will find out pros, cons and issues like any other games have. I personaly don't find anything crucial that would be bad about the game.

In the end it boils down wheter you like it or not. Get some trial/buddy keys and try the game out for yourself.

    Tortage PVP is great fun!

There are 8 character slots in AOC, and it's easy to level up, from level 1 to max level 80 will take about 3 weeks if you play 12 hours everyday. When you get epic then retire that character and go grind another character, and repeat 7 times on same quests and same zones until you get epic armors/weapons as well. If you can't find other thing to do then you can make your own guild and start building your own guild city. The crafting will take you ages to build the city.

Now you can grind gold to buy expensive mount. If you have everything done then take a break and waiting for the next expansion to continue grinding.

If you want awesome 1v1 PvP, massive battlekeep fights, and looking for a PvP game with a mature audience.. Then: Definately not yet.

If you want an awesome casual PvE game with nice graphics, a slightly new take on melee combat, and generally friendly and helpful players.. Then: Welcome aboard!

Do you mind to explain why did you decide not to try the game?

I would like to know what you find that unappealing about the game.

I'm not the OP but I'll bite. I wanted to try this game for ages but initial reviews claiming that it had too many bugs put me off. In my current game (EvE) it is possible to freely download and try the game for free for a couple of weeks before deciding whether it is worth it. I assume that it will be the same with AoC but I couldn't find where to download the game.

Some of you mentioned the need of a buddy/trial key. I'll appreciate if one of you would PM me one of those keys and the link to  download the game.

I can't recommend AoC with so many other games on the market. If you enjoy WoW you will enjoy AoCs type of gameplay, but the quality is lacking and Funcoms' handling is poor at best. The first 20 lvls are very well done, but is uninspiring after that. PvP isn't very well done with major parts still not working or never implimented (seiges, drunken brawling, etc).

According to which is your MMO flavor, I would recommend Eve or Aion. Some nice ftp games are Runes of Magic (almost WoW without the monthly fee) or GuildWars (not exactly free, but some of the best competative PvP out there and still has a huge population after 4 years)

It did, thanks Aercus. I'll download and install it this evening.

Why would you listen to anyone, pro or against?  They have a free trial. Download it and give it a try. No one knows you better than you.

runes of magic isnt anywhere near the same level as wow.Anyways, try the trial from fileplanet or get a buddy pass. Why would you base your decision to try a free trial on an mmo forum notorious for being hugely bias one way or the other? Not that hard to download the game and play for free to see if you like it.

The main reason to try this game is that I love the Conan lore. I read the books when I was young(er) as well as most of the black and white comic series. Didn't like the films though.

I actually play two very different games. WoW as a casual game every now and then EvE in a more serious, dedicated way.

AoC and LotR are games that have a deep background and well developed lore that I happen to like. Since it seems that the worst bugs of AoC are gone I will try the game and see if it for myself. LoTR will have to wait, and Aion... I rather wait till they crush the bugs that plague every new release.

I took me around 5 hours for the downloading and patching (7 m/bit), but if you start tonight you can have a nice weekend of gaming. Again, I would recommend PvE as PvP is still somewhat a work in progress and fairly unbalanced 1v1 (and the doucherate is quite high..). I think Crom is the most populated EU PvE.

I love the AOC lore as well and can tell you that the game has evolved  tremendously. It is a fun game and FC has loaded the post 20 levels with plently of content.

There is a free trial so go give it a shot. If you like the Conan lore, and with all the improvements, as well as awesome visuals, you should enjoy it.

  • Small info about trial period, theres no level cap or limited zone in Age of Conan like other mmorpg trials . You can level your character to like level 60 or something like that in that limited trial time so you can see much more zone and get much more info about game. Have fun..

A large part of the negative hype for this game stems from the launch.  They launched a half baked game.

I had stayed away from this game from what i heard, and im glad i missed launch (however im not so much emo about games and dont hold grudges)

I got a new rig several months ago and decided to stress test it with a trial for aoc.

It was anything but a pos game that was poorly made.

Lots of people who played at launch will say "1-20 was great, but after that the game sucks" ....well after a year of updates i would say 1-20 is the most boring, the game has no content gaps and lots to do at endgame, especially on a pvp server.  In fact, tortage, the starter map, is the smallest, most instanced (load screens) part of the game, unless you live for voice overs tortage is kinda meh, when compared to the game later on, after you have feat points and all your skills open up.

There is a learning curve with combat, you can block, dodge, strafe and combo, the combat is quick and can be intense.  This is what kept me playing after i hit 80.  The pvp was just fun, it wasnt drawn out and slow like some of the other big releases.

Its a good time to jump in, they are due to release a new major patch, including a renown point system and the ability to level your guild in the fields of pvp/pve/and crafting.  This includes a public ranking system for guilds.

Then there is the expansion on the horizon.

People who rage quit at launch (rightfully so?) are really missing out on some supurb pvp, and possibly missing out on the game they had hoped for at launch.  Luckily funcom isnt a company that shutsdown games (see anarchy online) however they need to stop shooting themselfs in the foot at launch (see anarchy and aoc)

Oh and dont get scared over global chat, thats where the attention whore kids hang out, the rest of the community is found in guilds and elsewhere and out numbers the global chat people.

Really reccomend the game for anyone who loves to pvp, you should get your first experience pvping in white sands tortage, as it is a hot spot.  Doesnt compare with the pvp fun at 80 however, with epic gear full feat point builds, and all your skills, but should be a nice taste of some pvp action.

Listen to this guy, because he is actually into something important. Been playing since december myself, and have seen all the updated stuff and newly added on my way up. Been a wonderful experience. Yes, 1-20 was "fun", but I really like 20+ also since its so much much more then Tortage.

Tortage is the best startplace in a MMO, final, but that does not kill the rest of the game, it just gives it something to live up to, andimo FC has been working hard to fill in emty places, and try to give everyone more to do. Just a shame it takes so long, but I guess, quality release over everything else is okay for me. Players love quality, but thay are also rude and impatient (its a fact!)

Do as many others, find a nice guild, it REALLY helps on playing the game.
