I ve played warcraft for 4 years on and off so i would class myself as someone that likes the game( even though i m disapointed at a lot of the changes that have taken place within the last couple of years ) . But beyond being on a decent server it really does nt matter if to me if this game has 11 million players or 6 million .
It would nt really effect my gaming at all if WOW was down just a million as long as there was nt dead servers ( obviously exisiting ones would have to be merged ) . Its seams to me that in some people need to it to be maintain its degree of success you justify thier choice of game . If you enjoy it and as long as it has enough people to support its continuation then it really should nt matter . Unless of course your one of the few players who has shares in Blizzard .
Warcraft has done well to maintain this degree of success for as long as it has but its a little dillusional to think it can last forever . Every game has a life span ( even WoW ) and sooner or later those that need it to be as successful as it was at its peak will have to face its decline . I wonder what they ll do then ?

The real question is why do all the other fans of other games need wow to be "killed" by other games sub wise?
If you like a game, go play it and stop wishing for the downfall of other games people enjoy.
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum
I agree. I play other games , as well as WOW. I don't need any of them to have several million subscribers...I just need them to be entertaining for me.
It depends on the game . In lord of the Rings i ve found no one that needs wow to be killed , if anything they seam to be glad wow is about because it attracts the younger players . I dont wish for the down fall of warcraft but its not realistic to expect it to continue forever in its current state . If anything i hope WOW is about for years to come . I ll proberbly return to again as i have done in the past .
I think another strong game that would challenge wows manopoly would nt be a bad thing . Although i have tried most of the games released since wow i can see why they have remained niche games . The mmo market needs some healthy competition and WoW itself could do with a game hard on its heals . SImply because it would put pressure on both games to sharpen up thier act . Of course thier will be no WOW killer thats been clear for years .
No idea why some love to argue that this game is the best or that game is better. Now if your talking what does a player think is best for the genre or a particular game then your talking about a very small group of people who actualy care. I think the majority of the post and I hear are simply for arguments sake; I hear it from die hard fans of all MMOs EQ players are especialy zelot like at least in person of there support of there game which is good a game needs loyal fans to survive and prosper at what ever its goals are.
When talking about a "killer" or hoping for a killer i.e. a WoW killer in this case I think is the hope for somthing like WoW only better which is a logical wish as a game grows older and the core players start wanting somthing new but dont have it. It is the desier for somthing to either push Blizz into making WoW that much better or for somthing to simply be that much better. Now to the players that want to call every new game that comes out the door a WoW killer or a fail because it wont hurt wow; you need to remimber that even though this web site likes to group all MMOs in one big pot the reality is they all have there own unique markets, Age of Conan by design will not appeal to the core that loves WoWs flavor 1 is a drive for action, mature content, low hummor and realistic visuals the other delves deep into a popular IP is loaded with refrences to pop culture and offers a softer mroe stylized visual. The same goes for Aion, Darkfall, Champions Online, and every other MMO. The closest I have seen to a AAA title that appeared to target the same market as WoW was War and looking at it; it does seem like the targeting of the WoW market was a decision made after development had started. War has a very similar loar and visual style its offten rumored that Warcraft started as an attempt to make a War RTS I dont know and dont care but that does show just how similar the IPs flavor are that that is a common thought. But if we look at Wars structure we see a very PvP centered design with a very liniear progression much of its structure looked as if it was going to be a blast for the hard core PvPer who also liked a bit of PvE and coming from Mythic this made total since at any rate its not the more casual seamingly open enviroment that we see/saw with WoW. The live version of War felt incedably similar to WoW, very relaxed and casual in nature even the PvP felt more relaxed and WoW like than I was expecting having been a vetren of DAoC RvR, note I am not suggest WoW PvP is not good mearly that it is a particlar style of PvP and differs greatly from other flavors seen else where. Now im not calling War a WoW clone by any means it is a unique game but it does seem like it was tailored and later in development at that to target a similar market that WoW targets.
If you read all that, then you are devoted lol, all in all it doesn't matter just play, the only reason I took the time to write that is that I am wating for an update to complete on the game I am playing.
This person summed it up.
We dont care, but till others start flames on WoWs with trolling post, some Fans jump to WoW's defense.
To me all of these "my game will kill yours" and "we have enough subscriptions to rival the Chinese army before re-spawn time" flame wars just sound like some people have masculinity issues.
An opinion doesn't make a game succesful. Newly launched mmo fans always find out about that one 2 months past launch.
Being succesful as a game has nothing to do with a personal opinion. That's something no mmorpg member seems to understand.
You say WoW fans don't care but they constantly flaunt the game's success more than any other aspect. They go on every forum and to the open betas/free trials of every other mmo to troll and harass others about how their game will never best WoW, as if those players cared. They don't let others just enjoy the games they want to play, they have to lord WoW's success over everyone.
Of course, there are also those who loathe WoW and resent that it's the most successful MMO currently, some for rational reasons, some not so much. The reasonable ones are fine with it's success but hate how that makes it's community act towards those who play other MMOs. The later are the ones who go on about "I hope this game kills WoW". It's really absurd.
Either extreme side of the arguement is ridiculous. When we were younger, we didn't say things like "Man, I hope Sonic kills Mario!" or "Only losers play Sonic! Mario is way more popular and therefore the better game!" We should all just enjoy gaming as a common hobby.
This all boils down to human nature. Most of us feel the need to be part of something important...something BIG...be a part of a BIG group, and I guess WOW is that for some. Someday I hope these people will realise that this is just a game...allbeit a BIG one...but still a game.
Waiting for a game that never comes...
I suppose its competitive human nature, and also that so many of them never played a MMO before WoW, so they automatically benchmark every game by its playstyle and universe.
However, I think they only logical threat to them would be if their friend or spouse or family member was leaving WoW for another game, or considering it. WoW isn't going to die for a long, long time. I mean, EQ1 hasn't yet...
I agree. I play other games , as well as WOW. I don't need any of them to have several million subscribers...I just need them to be entertaining for me.Thirded.
They don't I havn't met one person in WoW who cares about how other mmorpgs are doing. It's all the haters that keep bringing it up and how being popular doesn't make it good..... get over it.

Are you sure you played LoTRO? I see more talking about WoW there than I do in any other game ( EQ2 , Vanguard , Even WoW ).. Its like this " Durherehruhur WOws fer kidz herherhurher " " WoW sux derhereherhur ".. Same ol same ol.
I hope wow population will decline over the next few year.
Since it's the only way Blizzard will push to develop and release a next generation mmorpg.
I can't say GC is too bad tbh, even if I completely miss TBC phylosophy with hardcore raiding and hardcore arena.
Blizzard can afford a lot of things. I'm sure WoW will continue to be a decent MMO without TBC/Vanilla crew.
Every game has these idiots and sensible people ignore them. Heck WoW's forums get often trolled by people coming in from other games to brag about how their game is going to kill WoW. It is actually likely that many of the people trolling other games' forums and saying how much better WoW is, probably do not even play WoW but are simply trolling for a reaction. It is the Internet after all.

When I played LotRO there was constant WoW bashing.
Also, Im not usually a Grammar Nazi but come on googajoob.
LOL
Personally, I never cared about WoW's subs, it's still one of the best MMORPGs ever released, even gaining a different taste with mastery/reworked talents in Cataclysm, allowing for a lot more class customisation.
As bad as the WoW playerbase is I rarely see this. Usually it's some putz that goes and stirs up the Warcraft fans and that starts the flame war. Rarely are the WoW fans taking the first shot, they're too busy playing their game.

I think the better question would be why do fans of other games feel that if a game doesn't get "Wow-like" subs the game is a failure?
Noth even Zorn can say that EVE is a failure. But why do fans of other MMOs feel that their game will insta-kill WoW? See, I can generalise too.
To justify the overpriced gameplay.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
IMO whos to say that these haters are WoW fanboys? All I see in defense of the other game's Fanboyz is
"GO BACK TO WOW"
Even if that player never played WoW. Anytime theres a problem with the game, and somebody points it out, they are labled a troll, and WoW fanboy. WTF is with this?
Just look at the Aion Forums
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/250573/page/7
The Fanboys of these other games always find a way to turn a complaint thread into a (X) Vs WoW Thread, and then wana call complainers Trolls and such.
This is Bull**** People!!!!!
