Before people accuse me of being a care bear, just hear me out.
After researching a lot about this game, I'm finding that there are classes that are better suited for ganking (assassin and ranger). My concern is that, I want to be a Cleric, and although I have heard they are a powerful class, they are not gank proof especially to the classes I mentioned.
My problem is this.
If there are classes in this game that can gank, and run away . . . there-fore increasing their K/D ratio un-naturally . . . isn't this a bad thing?
If you can just gank and leave . . . that will be the best way to gain your K/D ratio and get the best gear and rating.
Those people who actually put themselves out there as high value targets (healers), with less defense 1v1 . . . well that could be a problem dont you think?
My decision to buy this game, really rests on the insight I can get on this issue.

your implying just because a ranger/assasain sneaks up on you, your going to loose?
It's all up to you man, assasain/ranger are better at sneaking up on unsuspecting players, but that doesn't mean they're gonna walk away from that fight alive.
Good clerics can hardly be solo'd, heck, even 2 people might not be enough unless they coordinate interrupts so you won't heal.
Also, while one class may be better for solo ganking, it might not be as good as the others for group play.
Invisibility is not an auto-win or anything like that, in fact, many korean servers have cleric and chanters at the highest rankings.
Self-healing > Invisibility for survival.
Just a reminder, if you gank someone that was at 10% health (90% lost to mobs) you'll only get 10% of the AP you'd get from soloing that player at full health.
Glad you brought up group play because thats also been something on my mind.
This game doesn't seem to have any "instanced" type PVP so it seems the ability to group with people will basically be decided on the quality of your guild im assuming?
I'm really hoping since PVP is a focus in this game, that groups can be had easily for it.
One problem I have with WoW is that its so hard to find a good PVP group at all. Premade BG's are just completely . . over . . . and once people get in a good Arena team, thats all they do, and do coordinate with more players than they already have bound to that team, can leave a lot of people out.
I'm hoping I can get in the game group wise fairly easily and heal to my hearts content.

With any luck, people will be more open to PUG groups since its going to be open world PvP, course theirs no way to be really sure until the game is out and people are playing. Guilds will probably run their own 6 mans as well.
Being a cleric, i doubt you'll have any trouble getting a group, guild or PUG.
But im with you here, hopefully groups won't be to hard to get going
I have a 45 Cleric on the Kor version of Aion, and ill tell you this. A good assassin is always a pain, and rangers are annoying as hell as well. But its very RARE that I get jumped my a rogue my level and lose, very rare. This game relies alot more on actual player skill than on who can mash the buttons faster. Take time to learn your toon and I promise you will be surprised.
This is my concern as well becuase I plan to play a cleric at some point. We're likely going to be first targets so it will be hard to get our k/d ratio up I think.
I'm also conserned whether our healing is taken into account when we're in a group. Are dps classes able to generate more AP because their taking down targets quicker? Us healers won't be hanging out near the back gathering very little AP I hope....this may turn alot of clerics off if its the case.

Well, I wanna talk about the Kill/death penalty. In the abyss you lose Abyss points, outside of the abyss in the normal world you lose XP. Simple as that.
Glad you brought up group play because thats also been something on my mind.

From what little I have seen its easy to get into a group, this will eb strongly based on the community that crops up after launch but with otehr games with similar PvP structures I have always noted a strong community, easy to find pick up groups and genearly understanding players likely due to the (I hate to say it so I wont say "need") but strong incouragment to group in such situations. Honistly though I dont think a scout class stands a lot of chance against a healer 1 on 1 healers imo are prity much the best soloest if onyl because they can generaly fall back on attrition not saying a skilled player of any class couldn't take you mearly saying that healers have a natural advantage in that they have heals, and in Aion they have fairly heavy armor and fair dps.
I will say Rangers are a pain in the back side to 1 v1 tehy will kite you forever lol and if they aren't breav enough to stand and face you there constnat running away will cost them the DPS it takes to bring down a tank so you end up with a fight of chasing the damn ranger around for a half hour untill he gives up on trying to kill you and just runs of our you give up on trying to catch him and run off with soem minor chance that you will get lucky and pop him or vice versa.
If I had to pick 1 class that I feared in a 1 on 1 fight remimbering I like to play a tank and am not particualrly good at 1 on 1 fights it would be the sorceror, such nukes and several very anoying movment imparing affects the little buggers are hard for me to catch and they have some DPS more than enogh to take me out in a timely manner; SM would be 2nd on my fear list assasins I typiacly own which I love and rangers its a mixed bag depending on how smart I get with avoiding or compensating for there kite trickery.
These are all great answers.
I really appreciate the help.
Well I'm going to order the pre order tonight and just dive in. Why not?
Just remember that you don't lose XP if you die in the Abyss, you only lose XP if you die in PvE.
You do however, lose a lot of abyss points
And, you have to go all the way back unless you have a kiosk.
K/D ratio will only come into effect at higher lvls and when your saving ap's for end game abyss gear. The penalty for dieing (ap's) is alot lower when you are low lvl rank, but the rewards for kills at this rank is much higher.
It's when you get into the higher ranks is when you start to see that dieing suks (got to lay low until you get enough ap's for that killer abyss weapon).

I think I understand that part of it but I'm unclear how we generate AP. Do you get AP simply from killing targets or does it take into account the amount of dmg someone has done to a target?
I'm also curious if healers are able to generate the same amount of AP as a assassin for example. Not too sure if I'm making sense or not...LOL. I've avoided pvp in Aion up to this point.

Really? I was actually rather surprised at how little I did lose abyss points wise when I was killed. Although maybe its relative to the amount of players that whoop up on you or their level. Course I only made it to rank 8 so I'm sure the higher your rank that the more points you lose too so maybe that's why it seemed so insignificant to me.

You will only lose to a "stealth" class like Ranger/Assassin if you suck or your gear is really bad in comparison to those ganking you or the ganker is MUCH higher level then you.
Let me put it this way. I was level 19 Cleric in the open beta. I was wearing white and green level gear and had +HP manastones in every slot I could put them in. Had around 1900 health and 2500 mana give or take a few. I did a quest where this chic was going to practice teleporting you. I picked a town for her to port me too and I ended up on the top of a mountain in Asmo territory!!! When I looked around me there was an entire guild of about 20-25 people there. I asked if they were pvp raiding and someone not attached to the guild but got there the same way I did said they were. So me and that guy formed a group and followed them in. We were zerging all over the area killing all sorts of asmo. Evey asmo I targeted was ?? to me.
Three to four times an assassin tried to backstab me during about an hour of raiding. Guess what....they didn't kill me once. I was able to root them every time and have no problems with them. So you see, I wasn't even Abyss level yet...heck not even level 20 and I was able to hold my own with level 30 toons attacking me....you'll be fine.
I think I understand that part of it but I'm unclear how we generate AP. Do you get AP simply from killing targets or does it take into account the amount of dmg someone has done to a target?

In group play all the ap's collected are shared from what I understand (I was a lvl25chanter in ob and grouped with 5 other lvl30 peeps and I got lots of AP,s even though i was the weakest of the group) . As far as 1vs1 cleric's have plenty of offensive firepower to walk away the victor.

Good to know...I'd hate to see very few clerics in game because they dont do well. Maybe I'll have to make one my main! LOL. Thanks for the helpfull info.

lvl50 abyss item is going to cost around 250k-625k each (gold items.) When you start saving that much ap your rank is gonna be high and in turn a single death at that lvl can cost you around 10k ap.

1. Clerics are nearly impossible to kill. I only lost to a couple very good sorcs. Rangers are gimp pvp.
2. Voice of Destruction. It's a cleric spell, high level, look it up, it'll put a smile on your face.

Case in point: lvl50 abyss bow, cost 614800 ap : www.aionarmory.com/item.aspx
But dam it has nasty stat's (10% more damage while in a pvp fight)

U mean *Word* of Destruction, and yes, that spell is ZOMGBBQWTF
My guess is a cleric or maybe sorc have the hardest time getting their top pvp gear in Aion? Their both likely first targets in large scale pvp battles so its gotta be hard to get your AP up high enough to buy what your after.
"I play Tera for the gameplay"
Haha. Well that story definitely got me pumped up to play as a Cleric :-)
Ya Clerics in this game kinda remind me of Paladins in wow. With their high armor with being able to wear chain and use shields and their great healing (mind you the MP cost of healing spells are rediculously low), they are a wear you down type of class. You aren't going to kill things fast, but you are gonna be hard as hell to kill unless you get gang banged.
I've been wavering back and forth since I've been playing the beta's (played CB5, CB6 and OB) on whether to go sorc (the high nuke dmg is really fun to see) or go cleric and I'm leaning hard to cleric. At lvl 22 you get several more offensive skills than what you were using before. The offensive skills are a little boring as you pretty much only use two buttons(chains proc on the same buttons so hence two buttons). But if you can live with the boringness of limited offensive ability early i think you will really enjoy cleric. I have a feeling clerics will be in high demand and a lot of people wont play because of how boring they are in the lower levels.
About 95% sure I'm gonna end up rolling Cleric especially after that pvp experience. If I had been a sorc I would have been dying right and left.
Also there's another skill that helps that only Aion has and every class can utilize, and that's flight/gliding...remember it can be a difference maker in this game! A few extra seconds to glide away and get off a heal is sometimes just enough to stay alive and get back into the fight!
Every time I went to Morheim (where that little girl "accidentally" sends you), I was fighting ?? players. Every time I fought the assmos in our home land, they were ??. I was level 22-24 for all of my PVP experience, and seeing as the level cap in the OB was 30, they couldn't have been any higher than 6-8 levels.
Furthermore, my first time being "accidentally" sent to Morheim, I was stuck on that mountain, flew down right outside their gates, and started down the road. My first encounter in the game with an asmodian was one who was fighting a level 21 monster. I watched him for a moment, especially after seeing ??, and quickly figured out that he was very near my level, if not 1 or 2 lower. Before he got involved in another fight, I jumped on him (templar) and after a nice long fight, managed to beat him. Five kills and good run down the road later, I'd pretty much decided/determined that for whatever reason, enemy levels are hidden. Either I ignored it to some degree, after that, or truly never saw an enemy player's level. I'd love to know the deal on that.
Anyway, piddling with duels and some arena, even a few levels difference is quite a big deal in Aion with regards to small group and especially 1v1 fights. I'd imagine players 10+ levels higher will decimate nearly any class, as any class. On that note, as a 24 cleric in OB, a specific rank 5 level 28 assassin with cleric backup managed to roll my ass without any possibility for me to fight back (I managed one heal, a pot, and died - under 10s death). However, redemption was nice when he died to a guard after I'd come back, and I managed to kill his cleric buddy, and the sorcerer which had shown up during my run back.
I just don't want people getting the wrong perception. I've said it before and I'll say it again - you don't roll and level characters you'll want to throw away in Aion.
