I am going to buy WoW when it releases in Europe, and wanted to hear what the best PvE class is for the mid/endgame.
I know alot comes down to playing style, and noirmally I am mostly to action, but I can play mostly anything.
This is to know what classes are overpowered/underpowered, so I can make a serious decition befor launching into the World of Warcraft.
Thanks

You should be asking yourself what do you want to play and make your own mind up. Everyone will have their own opinions on which class is the best for pve, but it will never been the same. This is one of many reason why there are more classes played then others because people want to play a class that people say is the best for pvp or pve.

While I generelly agree with you, its not always fun to play a class that isnt working - even though it looked nice in the manual.
Comming from Star Wars Galaxies, where some classes rule the others, I dont want to make the same mistake twice, and select a class, that dosent work well later on...
Are all the classes good - or are some close to useless?
U
all the classes are viable at lvl 60.
Nothing is broken. Depends on playstyle.
Warrior, tank or fighter
Rogue, fast burst damage but weak armour
priest, good healer
paladin, tank/healer bit boring as all your attacks are norml attacks unlike a warrior
druid, good all round class, heals...tank
warlock, summoner DoT
Mage
Basically they are all feasible.

I have been looking at the rouge or the druid.
What I am afraid of with the druid is that he can do alot of anything, but not anything really good.
As for the rouge, it could be a problem with the light amour, especially at the endgame.
I remember starting out with carbineer in Star Wars with turned out to be the worst combat profession. Luckily i could change class in SWG, but since i cant do that in WOW, i wanted to hear if i should be on the lookout for something.
thanks fo the help and quick replies

Best advice I can give you Arkitekten is to read through the World of Warcraft class section of official and fan site forums.

priest = healer is the old paradigm. WoW is a newer MMO' here priest do a fair amount of DPS as well and solo very well. A priest is nothing like a EQ cleric (or ever a DAoC cleric)
Druids are sorta a Jack of All trades, they can tank, they can heal, they run really fast The posters fears that Druids will do nothing well, is from EQ. It's not such in WoW, they can heal every bit as good as preists (given talents to make them do such) and they make pretty soild tanks at least as good as a paladin, and DPS dealers.
Rogues are more interesting in WoW than in previous MMO's, Blizzard has done a good job making sure all classes have something to add to a group. Rogues have something like a single targe mezz. Extra CC always comes in handy, and you can't stuff your noise up at the DPS. They also seem tank averagely well.

U-man
Well i wuold be warrior. Their strong and have lots of health
--Cheers mates!--
Yeahh I know what you mean mate.
I was a Pikeman/Carbineer back at release... Talk about chosing the wrong proffesions *shrugs*!
Anyway, I promise you that all the classes are great for PvE, but I truly belive that there are benefits from each stye of PvP.
The great thing about Shaman and Druid, is that if your a fan of groups and going into dungeons/instances and raids with other people, the Shaman and Druid can both work as secondary tanks, secondary healers and great spell casters! Shaman casts totems which are group buffs, and druid has allot of buffs aswell.
Priest and Paladin are awesome at healing and support as well. Both has Rez/Resurection(Like doctor in SWG).
If you really just wanna solo, then personally I would say that the Hunter is great. It is like a mix between a Rifleman and Creature Handler from SWG. You stand back and let the pet do the tanking. But still Hunter is great because it has aspects which do different stuff like increasing % to dodge attacks or increase melee speed. On top of that they are good secondary tanks aswell and has allot of weapon options:) But Hunter might lack a bit in the raid end game.
Warriors and Warlocks requires skill, but are just as good if you learn to use them probably.
Rogue is awesome as well. Probably the best single target damage in the game. They got cool poisons and have stealth. They are 100 times better than Smuggler from SWG, would ever be able to be:)
You can't go wrong with anything you pick:)
Good luck and welcome to azeroth!
Great to see more of the great SWG Community moving on:)
My first character was a Priest.
Very soloable. Once you get the spell to put a Shield Protection over you, it will make you invincible against any Melee attacks for up to 10 seconds OR for a certain amount of damage depending on the spell's level. Plus, with this Shield activated on yourself, your spells aren't interupted while you cast'em if a creature hits you! So for 10 seconds or a certain amount of damage, you can cast Smite over and over again without having to worry about it being interupted! Plus after a battle, if your health is low, you can heal yourself! Just make sure you have lots of Mana restoring Food and Mana Potions on hand!!! You can sell all Health Potions and Health food for money!
Then there's Hunter which I find is also very soloable. After Level 10, you get your first pet! Think of your pet as a grouped player that's always with you and always tanking for you! They deal a bit less damage than a real player, but since they are the ones taking all damage from a creature, you will most of the time come out of a battle without a scratch! On top of that, Hunters have the ability to heal their pets! So being a Hunter is kinda like being a Priest! You're constantly healing the tank while you are back shooting arrows at the enemy. Only anoying part is your pet gets hungry quite often. So don't forget to hunt beasts that drop meat to feed your pets. And if you let your pet die, you have a spell to Resurect them, except you will have to feed them or else they will deal a lot less damage in battle.
I haven't played any Warriors or Paladins above Level 10 yet, but according to most people, they are soloable too. Except Warriors you're always eating food after every battle to regenerate your Health. And well Paladins are apperantly just too uber cause they are powerful and can heal themselves. So maybe Paladins win in 'Best for PVE class' but I didn't try it to it's fullest, so I can't comment on them yet.

Stealth - Ambush - Hemorrhage - Sinister Strike x2 - Cold Blood - Eviscerate - Vanish - Preparation - Cold Blood - Ambush - ... you're dead! :P
Since everyone seems to be pointing out the good, I'll point out some of the bad. :P
Hunters - They are the least-wanted class for instances. Their pets can't tank at higher level instances, and they don't do enough damage to be considered a top-DPS class. They don't really provide anything to higher-level instances besides medium-DPS.
Mages - This is a problem for all caster classes, but most importantly mages. Equipment for a mage is all but useless. They are about 90% as effective naked as they are with level 60 armor on.
Rogues - They are the best DPS class to one target. That's good for 1v1, but not so good for instances. In higher-level instances you will rarely be fighting one mob at a time; even bosses will usually be more than one mob, and the spot usually goes to a mage or another AoE DPS class. They also do so much damage to a single mob that it can be extremely difficult to keep the aggro off them.
Druid - The jack-of-all-trades. There is nothing wrong with a class like this, but high-level instances can require such a perfect group that these are usually left out. If a group is looking for a true healer, they'll pick a priest over a druid in a heartbeat. Same if they're looking for DPS or tank class.
Rogues, mages, and druids usually won't have too hard of time finding a group for instances, though another class will almost always be chosen over them. Hunters, on the other hand, can have a serious problem.
The other clases are fine, for the most part, in PvE.
Warlocks - CC, good damage, and AoE damage. Though it is kind of the same with the mage, and equipment doesn't provide much of a bonus.
Warriors - May not be desired for Alliances groups as much since a Paladin can be almost as effective for tanking, with an added healing-bonus, but Horde will always need these.
Paladin - Good tanking class.
Shaman - Good healers and alright DPS. Two shamans can be as good as 1 healer and one DPS class.
Priest - Great for healing, though equipment provides sub-par bonuses.
Pick Night Elf Hunter. Half of WoW population can't be wrong!
I take it you did the same as this 50% (I doubt that is even close to the real number) of the US World of Warcraft community and made a Night Elf Hunter.

PvE Hunter is by far the best class... BY FAR. What other class can take up to 3 mobs of the same level as the hunter and still have only 10 second downtime between fights... asuming you are only going to take on one mob of your level next battle. One on one PvE the hunter is unmatched, just send your pet out to take hits and safely rain arrows upon your enemies. If your pet has low health you can heal it for decent regen per second (at 30ish it's 68 dps healed which is more than enough to make sure that your pet doesn't die, and it is channeled with no downtime on it). I admit that you can't kill quite as fast as some other classes, but having no downtime at all between battles is a huge plus making this the best class for farming and questing solo. Although that one guy did make a good point that they aren't sought after for instances... however, by the time you are high enough for an instance to have a good reward you should have a guild or at least a couple guys that you quest with that will be willing to do the instance with you.
PvP I would go with rogue or mage but since you aren't concerned with those it doesn't matter.
PvP servers own by the way
