Yep, I'm pretty much "lawful neutral" in game and in real life.
Can't play the dark side of a game either, (ganking lowbies, scamming, pirating etc) as it goes against my nature to inflict pain (even in a game) for no useful purpose.

I"m with you on that. I can't bring myself to cause other's problems. Not me at all.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Except in specifically RP-oriented play, which almost never happens online anymore, I am myself everywhere. What's the point of being anyone else?
So very depressing, and so very true. Goes for me as well.
*sighs* I miss RP...
I miss people who are capable of it. Most people who do it these days either practice a very shallow version or are trying desperately to live vicariously through online RP. You either get the people who think talking like a pirate makes them RPers or the people who hate their real lives and wish they were really an elf.
With people like that around, is it any surprise real RPers have given up?
It's not really that they've given up... I find great RPers from time to time, but they all either move on (and rob me of my RP ) or they just get more interested in PvP and PvP ratings and spend all their time PvPing (and rob me of my RP )...
I guess RP isn't as appealing to most RPers as it once was... That, or I'm just always in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"So I contend that the player stories will always be more powerful than the scripted stories that we try to tell the players."
I voted No mainly because it is a game and i choose to play my way, i may choose to help a noob i may choose to walk past you knowing you are going to die to the mob your are fighting. The point is that everyone plays the way that is most fun for them and for me that happens to not be in line with who i am outside the game.
I think it is because in the realworld I can see how worthless people are and don't feel the need to be nice to them but online since the people are not real to me I don't assume them to be useless bags of flesh and so I treat them much better.
That might be a superiority complex. You should have that looked at.
Life issues aside, why do you feel that way? I'm a bit confused coming from the opposite end of the personality spectrum here.
To me, people are far more useful IRL than they are in games - it just takes a bit of skill and coercion to get them to do things (it's not automatic although we'd all like it to be).

Agreed. I don't enjoy causing big problems for people.
I do like poking them, though. Just little pokes, you know, to invoke a reaction.
I guess RP isn't as appealing to most RPers as it once was... That, or I'm just always in the wrong place at the wrong time.
No, you just happen to be playing games that are not, by their very nature, friendly to RP. RP gets you nothing in game-terms. It gives you now XP, it gets you no loot, no gear, no gold. If you stop to RP, you fall behind people who are just playing the game. MMOs are not geared toward RP, they are geared toward grinding and e-peen waving. As such, most people who really care about RP don't play MMOs.
I have had the best RP ever in a MMO and it lasted a year. But I've come to realize that it was a fluke. All the right people in the right place at the right time. And I was even a late arrival compared to the others.
Been thinking of checking out NWN again, but my experiences there were pretty much the same as in most MMOs. People were too busy with other things...
"So I contend that the player stories will always be more powerful than the scripted stories that we try to tell the players."
I voted yes. I often roleplay, and in those cases that character may or may not reflect my real personality. They do to some extent, to be sure, since I made them up, but I try to make them their own people with their own personas. That is, unless I am playing and roleplaying the character named Dubhlaith, in which case that is just me roleplaying myself in that world, and she behaves as I do.
In game, and in forums too, I will sometimes be more straightforward with people that upset or annoy me. I usually do not want to "make a scene" in reality, but I do not care on the internet. So, while I do things I would be too embarrassed, shy, or polite to do or say in the physical world, they are still things I believe and reflect my personality in that sense.
This is a very interesting poll, and I am glad you did it. This is an interesting subset of the MMO community itself, so this is very interesting to see.

For the most part, my in-game character reflects me. It's pretty cliche, but true.
MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan
Each of my characters have there own personality. I enjoy relaxed roleplay having played many pen and paper rpg's this is the way it has always been for me. I enjoy creating a back story for each character and try to react to situations as that particular character would.
i goes for yes to myself, i really want to threw myself in game, all bout my personality, when im upset ill be an annoying person, but when im in a good mood ill be as usual i am, helpin person or sometimes gives a small amount of cash or sumthin..
but i goes no for some short of moment, what i say is some people wanna be a better person in game, what i mean is when a looser became a great player in game, full of good equip or had a lot of cash, he/she become stubborn and crash newbie a lot, an aggro person and sometimes really annoying. well we dont really knows is he she or he, is he/she really good or bad, is he young or old............ or else. there is so much vsriables.
well it good to be true, but its not a wrong choice to be wrong. it depends on oyrselves. we do what we want in game since we can be anythin we want, MMORpG is our another world, its not our real world, so create a suitable world for some player is soo much fun.
be wise and be good since we know we can do that. ^^
I'm pretty much me no matter where I go and what I do, including on teh intarwebz and in games.
I generally play "good guys", I don't detonate nuclear bombs in Megaton or blow up asteroids at Peragus.
I save the little sisters and play characters like Alliance Priest. I find it hard to take the"evil" path, and am generally helpful and pleasant to those who don't rate high on my twat-o-meter.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
Online gaming gives me a chance to do stuff I don't get to do in real-life: go crazy and say weird stuff. Overall, I'm more outgoing in game than I am in real life...in real-life, I'm very shy and laid back. However, in both in-game and in real-life, I retain the side of me that loves helping people out and being a leader.
Yes my game/irl personality is the same. Generally i'm fairly passive in both, as long as I can carry on with what I was doing then there is no trouble. But for this to happen in-game it requires much more conflict.. which forces me to be more aggressive then I would choose to be in real life. So depending on the game I guess it can change your personality while you are playing it, weither you want it to or not.
Some players don't give me much choice though, with their childish *beyond logic or reason* insulting and pvp bullying. My guess is those are the ones pretending to be something they aren't, and are just venting their real life issues. I'd hate to see where these people go to vent after trying through a game fails..
you still interact with people. "Because its a game" still works in single player games, but when you interact with other people, being a douche will get you the same response if you were a douche irl to other people.

I’m pretty much the same here or online. I used to RP a lot but I haven’t found any game or group of Rpers worth the effort.
Online, I usualy keep to myself and my 10+ year old clan and group of friends on Ventrilo.
Exactly like in real life, I’m a very nice person until provoked. Though, in RL people tend to generaly remain calm and friendly with me.
Did you really make this post?
I'm not sure what to say...

For the most part and that is why I voted yes but with my in-game personality I take on more of a leadership role which I do not do in RL.

90% reflect my rl personality, the other 10%....well sometimes I just want to let it out and get wild, because it is a game after all.

Yes.
<- Helpfull and friendly :>
+ the added stuff that just doesn't go in RL like ambushing and ganking people.
My brand new bloggity blog.
yes.
im critical.
im whiny.
I actually role play in RPGs. So in short, no.
Play a role! Shadowclan

WTF? No subscription fee?
No. If I want to be me I do something else than play a RPG game.
All my characters have different personalitys. Some are cheerful and nice, others dark and not so nice.
I don't think I really have an internet personality when Im gaming.
When I post in a forum it is a different thing, that is just like having a discussion with friends or strangers. It is still me behind that.
