At EVE Fanfest, the developers at CCP have released some new information about Dust 514, the console FPS that will interact directly with EVE. Among other things, we learned today that the game will be subscription free, but will support microtransactions. These microtransactions will make things like item blueprints available abut will not, in the words of the developers, allow players to "buy win."
Some other interesting facts:
Keep an eye out in the coming days for a full article on Dust 514 and other information released at this year's EVE Fan Fest.

No in pc?????
FINALLY! A reason to buy a console!!
CCP...thems smart fellers!
Hmm, the game seems almost ready for release. I am well surprised. It will be a killer title. Nice job CCP.
Wow. This could be a sign of things to come: Step from one game into another game while earning experience in both for a specific character, all these virtual realities become more cooperative than otherwise under a novel business model.
More likely I just misunderstood what is actually happening here.
Characters will not be transportable afaik.
EVE players will contract DUST players for mercenary operations for their EVE sov issues, thus delivering content to the DUST game.
Reading the discription of the game , it reminds me very much of Planetside, but maybe ramped up alittle.
No specific fixed classes, players in Planetside can swap to whatever class they want, vehicles could be spawned from the sanctuary or allied bases at anytime.
Commander with RTS perspective, Ok planetside didnt have that as such , but as a CR5 back when I played you could use the global and planet chats to try too direct the forces, sounds like this could be a better system , however , who gets to pick who's being the commander, I can see that causing problems and the same people trying to control the command position all the time
Might be worth taking a look at see what its like though.
I wish more mmo's would bridge the gap. With eve it works well since the game has such an epic size that a game within a game could work. Imagine if like, lotro had a rts console brother that was a seperate game but affected the politics etc. of the entire world for both games. it would encourage people to play both games. And then there's the untapped gold mine which is cell phone adaptability with mmos.
There will be corporations just like in EVE. The corporations will be online communities (just like guilds), which will choose their leaders for certain operations. That means there won't be a random strategic leader.
Most likely corporations will be built around good field commanders, as just like in EVE.
i know a number of people who tried eve and couldn't get to grips with it as they like an FPS so this will be ideal for them, however the cost model on this could be an issue, XBox peeps already pay to play online, and PS3 peeps get online play for free, if CCP can get people past that hurdle of pay to play then game on!! (EVE player with a PS3 here btw)
According to the OP it will be F2P with microtransactions. With xbox live being P2P i think microtransactions are going to be the new thing for xbox live games.

this is what happens when i read fast about a game i'm looking forward to - i read "free" as "fee"
This sucks. I'd rather pay 15$ a month when the alternative is microtransactions.
Buy win.....awesome.
"This sucks. I'd rather pay 15$ a month when the alternative is microtransactions."
Same here
Outside of MT's this is one of my biggest concerns for the game. I want to know how the commander system works exactly, They already said they are going to have "matchmaking" so clearly they are expecting a lot of people to "pick up and play" rather then play more MMO styled "grouped".
Arg its only going to be for console? Man that sucks....I been waiting for somthing like this for ages. I have always like space sim. but was always curous if anyone would combine them with FPS. it was done (badly) a few times. but this game sounds like they did it.
And with the EVE crew they dont B.S when they say they have made a game or added features. they really have.
It..Burns..
Characters will be separate in EVE and DUST 514. In an interview, if I remember correctly, an employee said something about how pilots are good at flying and the mercenaries are good at "blowing shit up". Whats interesting though is that they'll be able to merge both "worlds" through COSMOS that they'll be releasing next year as well. Id imagine they'll allow EVE pilots to contact and hire mercenaries through COSMOS...if not then that sucks but it would be an amazing feature.
What I wonder is how much power the commander that is controlling the ground soldiers of DUST 514 will have. Will they be able to choose respawn points (if any) for the mercs? Will they be able to support the mercs with orbital strikes, etc? Theres just so much potential for this game. I hope im not overhyping the game and it really becomes something amazing...but knowing CCP, it should be.
As for the microtransactions, im assuming it'll be the same as with EVE. Being able to buy GTCs and ETCs to convert to PLEX to sell in-game. Im pretty sure they said that the currency will be the same. If the character progression follows EVE then no matter how much money you have you wont be able to drive the bigger and badder vehicles (or whatever they're there for) without the necessary skills...but enough of my rambling and hopes.
Gotta wait for more information on DUST 514 haha.
PS. PLAYER HOUSING, HUZZAH! Hopefully it doesnt fail.
Playing: EVE Online
I am really looking forward to this. I enjoyed EvE for a long time. I wonder if I can contact my old corp through Dust 514?
Current Games:
I thought it was stated that is was F2P with microtransactions.
The game and its core idea seems really interesting. With its cross-platform-game type of important function and online gameplay.
What I really want to know more is will the game have some story? or will it be pure shooting with contracts from EVE players?
I really like that the game will be Free to Play considering Xbox Live owner are royally screwed by Microsoft in having to spend $50 yearly for a below average or no special service at all.
Im gonna have to hold my breath on the whole Item Mall idea for now until more explanations are given but from the quote they gave, about absolutely no "win game" items.
There is a free to play game on the pc which is mmoish, FPS, with commander interaction. where the commander is voted by the players on the team savage2.com/en/main.php the commander actually plays out the match in an RTS view and gives commands to the other players, if the players follow the commands they get points at the end to build up persistant items ect. you could try that out and see how i belive dust will do it (in a general sort of way) it gels extremely well and since savage 2 is F2P now there is nothing to loose in giving it a try.
"Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason."
With this game being another online Shooter with no monthly fee many more players will have access to it.
When I first heard of this game I thought it would crash and burn as a P2p MMo on consoles.
Now it's going to be golden.
This thing could be the next Halo or CoD4
As for the micro transactions im sure it will probably only be DLC with new blueprints and maps similar to what other FPS games offer for 5-10 bucks.
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum
That's not good enough for me. The problem isn't just other players having something that I dont, but also if I have something others dont. They may state that you wont be buying "win"-items, but they have to give something if they want it to become a real income... and any advantage(no matter how small) is a game breaker for me.
Some may think I'm overreacting considering we dont know much yet, but I just hate microtransactions so terribly much because suddenly you start thinking about the payment while you are playing, rather than something that is beyond the game. It becomes an effective immersion breaker.
