Think about it.
When you play an FPS game online, you play with and against other people. ALL THE TIME.
When you play an "MMO", you run around alone most of the time.
I could also add that FPS multiplayer is generally 16 vs 16 up to 64 vs 64 and so beats the number of players in the same group as well as generally having better teamplayers, more intelligent people (flame suit on) and more action.
I predict a future where future FPS games take over the MMO market. The MMO companies will continue to make WOW clones forever, and continue to fail, while companies like DICE and Infinity Ward continues to make games that are bigger and better, closing in on what we would call "MMO"s in functionality.

I don't think so. FPS games have evolved a long time since quake and doom.
MMOs are still a rather new thing.
If you look on the evolution of FPS games they change a lot with a single game every 5 years or so.
First we had some pure 2D games. Then they moved to partial 3D in quake.
Quake 2 really changed things again. And then came half life. After that we got Counter strike and then the modern version we still have today. So FPS games are probably in their 6th generation now.
For MMOs we had UO as the first gen and EQ as the second gen. And we still are are a gen 2 or 2,5.
Sooner or later the MMOs will evolve a lot like the difference between Quake 2 and half life agian. exactly how the MMOs will change is for the future to tell us, maybe it will focus more on RPG like Bioware is trying or maybe well see more a FPS game instead.
But generation 2 is defined by the AI. As long as we have tanks, healers and DPS we are at the same generations as EQ, at least in PvE. For PvP the curent genratin might be a step further with DAoC but we still havn't seen much new since then.
All kinds of computer games evolve in steps, be they FPS, RTS, platform games, adventure games or action games. that is true for MMOs too and sooner or later will a game change this as well.
We just need a new thinking game like Counter strike, Total annhilation, Diablo or Baldurs gate. Games like that doesn't come so often but once they do they will change everything about MMOs.
Remember how the RPG games were before Baldurs gate and Daggerfall? Or FPS games before Quake 2?
One genre will not kill another, period.
There are FPS fans, there an MMORPG fans, there are fans of both. I can tell you right now, those holding the MMORPG from collapsing will be the WoW players. Never will an FPS become that successful, because even if that 20 million players, they only got one payment (or no payment) from them, while WoW charges per month and makes more money. If anything, they keep the door open for more MMOs to come in and play.
Maybe I don't see your logic, but FPS games having more intelligent players? My fat white rump. Go play a round of CSS and then log onto EVE and talk to some of the guys (not the asses, the good ones). They're far more intelligent. Not only because the style of game attracts the nerdier, smarter folk by itself, but it's less accessible to children with the monthly fee.

Well certainly FPS games are better than MMOs, no apples and oranges here....FPS>MMOs
Hell 2D sidescrolling NES games>MMOs.
But if you ask me MMOs have a bigger chance of imploding onto themselves from the lack of variety and actual sense when it comes to how to make a game "fun and interesting."

Sure theres always a couple of groups that will stick for long but this games arent really about creating persistent worlds.

Counterstrike? Thinking? It was the right mix of realism (Rainbow 6) and action (Unreal Tournament) but I assure you less thinking occurs in high level CS play than occurs in the better action FPSes. CS is a fine game, but it's not more tactics-heavy than the better action FPSes.
More on topic, MMOFPSes will undoubtedly be a dominant genre in the future and I have no clue why more companies haven't pursued making them (at least in the vein of the small-scale conflicts Global Agenda, but ideally in the large-scale epic war of Planetside.)
Also I find it amusing that "MMOFPS" seems to mean Tabula Rasa to people. Never got to try out that game (it did seem interesting) but it definitely wasn't a full-on MMOFPS.

I agree. If someone somehow combined FPS action (as opposed to boring point/click WoW style fighting) and EVE style sandbox freedom all in a scifi setting, it could be the most awsome thing ever. However I doubt it will happen for a while.
My guess is Blizzard next mmorpg is fps style with competitive arena. Just my guess.

As much as I like MMOs they are at the same level of FPS's as far as PvP goes, but PvE is mind numbingly easy, boring, and repetitive. I agree with the op, imo, darkfall has had the BEST combat system in any mmo i've ever played (EVEN THOUGH it was incredibly bugged). The satisfaction that you get from dodging an attack, or hitting someone right on target without an autotarget option is awesome.

How social a game is depends in large part on what the other, non-combat, parts of the game entail so FPS or traditional MMO it could really go either way.
So you're all claiming that FPS games suck because they're first-person... this is how you sound right now: "oh haha, I can't understand the similarities of games and love to concentrate on their differences because I'm a consumer, not a thinker."
If First-Person Shooter companies continue on the path they're going, they will make better MMORPGs than MMORPGs companies in every way. It's inevitable. The shooter companies are making bigger maps, adding more social tools, innovating online gameplay left and right...
MMORPGs have stayed generally the same for the past few years. They're trying to get more action-ey while ignoring the problems with social aspects. Shooters are moving in the opposite direction - they already got the action, they're making their games more social.

I would not say the future,because i enjoyed UnrealTournament in 98/99 before i enjoyed anything in the MMORPG genre.So IMO it was already the mainstay before MMO's.What turned me away from FPS's is that they became far too gimmicky with kiddie stuff.Things like adding in too much invisible or speed or power ups to make you instant killers.
I liked the pure vanilla approach to gaming especially in a FPS game,i don't want any gimmicks,i want my thinking and skills versus the other player/s skills.I also do not want the FPS aspect of the game to turn into a MAP control game,that is not FPS anymore that is the gimmick side of the game.
You are correct however,most of the time MMORPG"S are full of players wandering around solo.FPS's are usually fast paced action,so you have to remember myself included,do not always want hyper mode.Tons of people like to sit back and relax in a MMORPG.I would hate to think i can't go nuke something in the microwave or grab a drink w/o dying every time and having to respawn miles away.SO i don't think the FPS aspect wil lever take over in MMORPG's.

NPCs are overpowered, so you are not on a level playing field. It takes a lot of skill to take down NPCs, a lot of coordination and planning. In FPS you are the same as other players, you just run around and shoot people, it's trivial and boring.
Games that require some thought are interesting, FPS are for 10 year olds who run around screaming headshot and have no planning or logical capabilities.

Well one point Yahtzee tried to make that's very true is how are FPS player going to deal with grind and quest fetching when MMO players can barely deal with it half the time?
Well, with the current MMO AI that isnt 100% true. To evolve MMOs we need npcs that act more like humans.
MMO NPCs are incredible stupid. You can't tank a human player, npcs just do the egular scripted thing everytime you meet them. There is a lot of potential in MMORPGs and I don't think MMOFPS will win the day in the long run.
MMOs today have 2 problems as I see it:
1. Stupid AI. Makes the game more easy than it should be. The AI is exactly the same in every game (besides Guildwars) since EQ. It must be greatly improved to make the games more fun and challenging. Just giving the bosses loads of HPs doesn't make the game more fun.´a Good AI is when you have hard to tell who is another player and who is a npc.
2. Boring combat system. Eqs old combat system is getting really old now, we need something new. But FPS style attacks with one or 2 strikes suck even more. Maybe it is time to make a MMORPG on the Wii. You could do all kinds of cool attacks with a Wii controler while still keeping the game a RPG.

Oh yeah because in an FPS game all you have to do is tab lock them and just shoot to kill without having to aim properly, and enemies never side step to make you lose aim.
Enemies never take cover, they never pick up grenades you've thrown at them and toss it back at you, oh and they never shoot back do they?
There's no strategy involved in shooters like when you're spotting they call an armored tank your way to gun you down, enemies never group up to protect their numbers and they never use health packs...0o
Enemies never set up land mines and traps all over a narrow area while they're sitting at the other end behind turret guns.
They never aim for your head, they never use rocket launchers to one-shot you, shotgun groups don't try to flush you out while enemy snipers try to pick you off from a hidden location when you try to run.
You'll never find a weaker enemy try to bait you out and make you chase him into a dozen of his shotgun and chainsaw wielding friends around a corridor.
All enemies do in FPS games is stand in one place unable to spot you outside of a 10yard aggro range and continuesly walk back and forth back and forth unaware that just 20 yards from them you're teabagging one of their own even though you guys are in plane sight....oh and MMOs are nothing like that...lol
