Not being able to have other plays come onto your ship just really throws the game off for me I was keeping up with it till I found that out, so now its at my never look at again list.

So one tiny part of the game that isn't made available at launch (they said they have that planned for the future) is enough for you to ignore the rest of the game and what it can deliver?

Some people wanted a Star Trek sim, not a Star Trek game. I prefer a good game myself.

Not to say anything against STO... But I am afraid that there will be a little more than "one tiny part" missing from the game. And as much as I am looking forward to its release... I am still worried about what Cryptic will create.

And could you please give more examples of it being a game rather than a sim? I mean what would make it a sim over a game? And aren't we really just talking semantics here?

I could answer that, at least for some examples. A Star Trek sim would involve a first-person view from the bridge, commanding a ship by having the helm, tactical, and all stations handling all of your battles. A sim would also have you work your way up from being a cadet.
A Star Trek game is flying around a ship in 3rd person view, doing your own firing, management of shields, etc. And for ground combat, a game would involve a 3rd person view where your crew follows you around like MMO pets.
I can't blame Cryptic, though, because they're trying to make Star Trek a fun MMO, not a lengthy simulation for hardcore fans. I think they've done a great job so far balancing canon with "fun".

You see very few are asking for a first person view and for everything to be done for you. But you will not start out as a captain. In control of a ship? Yes, but not a captain. So you do have to work your way up to captain.
And you will be able to fly around in space in 3rd person view, but there are some things that you will not be able to do that some feel should be in any space combat game. For instance barrel roles, loops, etc... Asteroids and planets can break line of sight, but ships cannot. In other words, you can fire right through the center of a ship and hit your target that is on the other side.
I don't see many players wanting a Star Trek sim. But there are quite a few who want it to be Star Trek, not WoW in space.

Then you're not looking in the right places. All sorts of hardcore fans are asking for more of a simulator for STO over at Cryptic's forums. There are many. They also complain every time Cryptic bends/breaks canon a little.
Personally, I'd rather have STO be fun. I'm not worried about bending canon or being a "game" instead of a "simulator".

Problem is that one persons version of "fun" is another persons version of "finger-nails scraping across a chalk-board". I'm in the boat where the decisions that Cryptic has decided to go with the game has removed all the potential for "fun" it might have had for me.
Nothing wrong with you or others enjoying the direction they've decided to go with the game.... everyone has different tastes.

One more thing on this... I sometimes read the forums over there...
In these posts you are referring to... Are they actually asking for a "simulator"? Or just asking for the game to be more Star Trek like? If they are indeed asking for a Simulator, could you provide some links? At least to the thread they are in. And could you give some examples of bending/breaking cannon that people over there are upset about?
Cryptic is going to have to take some "artistic license " with this game. Turbine has bent the rules of lore here and there in LOTRO for the sake of game play and i expect no less from Cryptic. If they make this the way some want it will bore the hell out of most of us. Anyone realize how much time was spent between "events" in the series' and movies for example?. Space is a big place and even at warp speed takes time to get from one sector to the other. Is this what people really want? Spending hours on a star ship Iooking are readouts? I know i dont. I know this is an extreme example but if you want it to follow the lore to the letter this would be part of it.
To each his own. My question would then be... Why pay for an IP if you are not willing to stay true to that IP?
I do not want a Simulator, but I do want Star Trek. Not just another space game.
The answer to that is fairly simple: what works in a book, doesn't translate 100% on the movie screen. What works on tv doesn't translate 100% in a game. It's just a question of giving the right feel to it. And I'm guessing the mission episodes will do this much more then any specific combat detail.
Granted that having true 3D combat instead of limited 3D would be nicer from a tactical POV, but they want to keep controls as easy as possible to keep it fun and accessible to everyone (including the many physically impaired members active on the STO forum). From what I've heard from guys that tried it out at Pax, it works well. So I'll reserve judgement until I try it out for myself.

I will agree here... BUT... If you log onto LotRO you know it is Lord of the Rings and they did a very good job of following the LotR lore. And that is what I want with STO.

I too will reserve judgement on this. My biggest problem is the LoS not being broken by ships.
The bottom line here is that EVERYONE is different and has different tastes. Personaly about 80% of the decisions Cryptic has made with the game strike me as utterly moronic.... enough that I'll even be reluctant to try any Cryptic products in future, even if offered as a free trial. However....there are plenty of other folks who seem happy with those decisions....so who am I to judge (for them)? Also I don't want to make anyone feel like I'm kicking thier pet puppy.
I'd like to mention just 3 things.....
1) Unless some-one voted you proxy rights.... no one here represents anyone other then THEMSELVES. So any comments along the lines (and this goes for both fans and critics) of "most" or "real star trek fans" or "small minority" or anything along those lines (and I've been guilty of it myself sometimes) is complete and utter bunk. The only opinion ANYONE can directly speak to is their OWN.
2) Different people on the critic side are bothered by different things. However there is ALOT of room between... "Your ship is your avatar in space, you MUST play as captain and no other players CAN play aboard your ship as crew" .... and... "You are a CPO in the transporter room, your job is to stare at an empty console for 20 hrs until you reach a planet where you can press 1 button to beam down the away team.....and your ship CANT operate unless all 30 players are aboard and manning thier positions." Lets not pretend those are the ONLY options the devlopers had. There are ALOT of different ways they could have gone and still made a functional MMO.
3) This site is MMORPG.COM not a Cryptic fan site. It's a place for gamers to discuss games and gaming in general and talk shop about the mechanics of how things work in various game. It is NOT "whining", "trolling" or out of line to post honest criticisms of the way certain mechanics are setup or the way certain companies make games. As long as it's done honestly with respect for other people having conflicting views and without getting personal it seems totaly fair game to me. In fact, that's what I think makes this site better then alot of other sites. There is room for people to say "I think this decision was really stupid"....and not have it moved to the trash bin...or burried in some never seen topic.
To each his own. My question would then be... Why pay for an IP if you are not willing to stay true to that IP?
You say that as if it's an all of nothing. There are many things I love about the Star Trek IP. There are also things I could care less about that are in Star Trek. I'd be paying for a Star Trek MMO. That means I'd be paying to play an online game with a large world of lots of other players, all inside of a Star Trek themed universe.
Bending or breaking canon with some trivial details is not going to make it any less enjoyable or any less worthwhile or valuable for me.

The issue is misinformation and pure disdain for something people no nothing about. Honest feelings, like the individual who stated they did not want to be a captain, is fine. The problem rests with individuals who spread false information and that is what we in the STO community have criticized. If an individual states they do not like STO due to the fact they have never been into ST than fine. If someone states "this game is going to suck because I heard...." then we will as a community stick up for the truth. It is trolling when people criticize a game before they have even tried it. I would never post in a forum based on hearsay. I may post based on the information taken straight from a game's website but to make up stuff like many have is something the ST community will fight against everyday.

Here is hoping that Star Trek Online will be very fun, even if you are completly new to the MMO genre of games.

Got my Vulcan named picked out and ready to kill me some Klingons. Its only logical that this game will fill a void for many.
