Is anyone else waiting around for WoW to be overtaken?

  • I just simply don't care about wow.  I played it for two years, found it to be lacking, and left.  Have rarely been tempted to come back.  It's a good game, and I see why people like it.  I did too at one time.

As far as i'm concerned, it's not about bringing wow down, it's about creating a quality alternative for those that want more from their mmo.  Naturally, that will likely result in a lower subscription level for wow, but that likely won't "kill" it.  Heck, if there were a good sandbox / linear hybrid out there that only had a million customers, and wow still had 10 million, I'd be ecstatic.

When you really think about it, how many mmos have you played over a million players?  With the exception of those who played Lineage 1/2, pretty much no one has played a mmo with a million customers except for wow.  So here's the key point:  Wow is not the problem.  The problem is that there are no developers who can make a competitive alternative.  If anything, wow is a positive as it sets the bar for that "quality alternative" at a much higher level.

There is a gap to be filled in the market, and an entrepreneur with the proper funding has that market 100% completely open to them.  We know that wow clones are possible in a decreased development cycle, and all it would take is a wow clone plus deep sandbox elements and a larger world that is polished and of high mmo quality.  Of course I understand that you can't just whip that up, and that it is a challenge.  However, it's not an insurmountable challenge by any means.  If I had the financial backing, I'd love to do it myself.

If you played WoW for two years it wasnt lacking... 420$ for two years worth of entertainment, you could spend that much in a single night out. (without trying)

Don't forget "social ties". The game may be bad, but "everyone I know plays it", thus you stay.

I'm lucky no one I know plays it, to be honest.

I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.

Oh, I forray into other games all the time, How ever they have never held the same signifcance as wow has.

Like if I get a good piece of endgame loot in lotro, it doesn't feel the same as getting something in wow. It's like windows, It may be worse than Mac but since everyone uses it, it's better.

To my knowledge everyone uses it because its simple, both windows compared to mac and WoW to other MMOs.  You find collecting 10 wolfs teeth to be a challenge. Just because everyone uses something doesn't make it better.  You know how many people out there actually pay for stuff? If they only knew what torrents were.

I intentionally pay for stuff.  I've got a good job and i can afford to, and if no one pays for this stuff the artists will stop making it (or at least not making as much of it).  Of course I know about torrents, and I could have hard drives full of movies and music and games.  But if I've got the capability to pay for it, I'm gonna do that.  I'm not gonna demonize you for it, because truthfully speaking I used to do it myself.  But don't go making out like someone who buys their stuff is some kind of retard for it.  Without them, the stuff you steal wouldn't be there in the first place.

Kind of a daft title. It's like saying "Is anyone else waiting around for Jay-Z to be overtaken at the top of the music charts?", it's only going to be replaced with something equally horrible.

Yes, because until it is, game developers will be forced to make games that have elements that are like WoW.

    Typical conversation:

Gamedeveloper: I've come up with a new MMO idea.

Banker: Will it make a tonne of cash like WoW?

Gamedeveloper: I'm sure that it will sell, but I wasn't planning on making it much like WoW.

Banker: Oh I'm sure it will be fine, just make sure that there is some half naked elf chicks and we have a deal.

    Gamedevelper: <sigh>

Oh the other hand, a game that has made a few squillion dollars of money can only help put MMOs on the map as games that companies should invest in and develop.
