Fallen Earth puts most big buget MMO launches to shame

chryseschryses Member UncommonPosts: 1,453

I have written a review in my usual blog but I just felt compelled to post this on the forum.  The team at FE have a lot to be proud of and when I look back over the last 10 years of MMO's I have played. I am having trouble remembering one that has had such a smooth launch, with what feels like a complete game.

For once I don't have that sour taste in my mouth knowing I bought a game 6 months too soon.

* The FPS are incredible considering I am playing on max settings.

* When a bug or issue comes up its normally resolved very soon or at least with 24 hours.

* GM's constantly in the channel talking and answering questions

* Only time I lost an item in the inventory, it was replaced within 24 hours and I had 3 emails from the company.

Besides that, this is the first game that has grabbed me since EVE all those years ago and I am amazed that I really didn't take it seriously because like most people I 'used' to believe the hype and all the fancy videos that came before a big budget release only to see a shocking release.  To top it all off there is only one server and its global, just like EVE.  So the game is packed, I sell a lot of my crafted items on Auction as its used a lot and the global channel plus regional is non stop.   Besides Jumpgate Evolution I doubt I will be playing another game for quite a while.

Makes me wonder how the hell the big studios can't get it right...

  • I think they do in gameplay. Personally the performance graphically is poor, the animations are well below standard.

Also the weekend server performance has so far been way to poor for a full scale subscription MMO. I am paying to play and if I can't pay reliably then I will eventually be dissapointed regardless of how good the potential is.

That is what I am genuinly scared of. Big houses buying top employees of this team out.

They did manage something extraordinary. The stability, and depth to itemization and content AT LAUNCH is pretty much staggering compared to so many bigger releases. It all adds up to a game that is truly fun to play and demands you to plan and think ahead.

How many times have we recently seen games where crafting (aka; important alternative gameplay content) only had being implemented as an afterthought instead of it being a actual foundation for the game?

What about the size of the world without using preloaders?

What about mounts being a deep and genuine part of the crafting system in this game, rather than a carrot on a stick for when you get to level *insert number here*, and the absolute NEED to have one a.s.a.p. in order to navigate that vast world or to cary more stuff around? What about mounted combat being implemented right from the beginning?

It would be a shame if this company would be torn to shreds by big companies yearning for some fresh independent minds who DO manage to pull it off.

To state my opinion best on your answers I would have to say graphically it is in the eyes of the beholder. There has been a lot of exaggeration on graphics about FE, granted it may not have state of the art realism like AoC, then again its not going down the line by using cartoon or korean graphics to sustain mass amounts of players in 1 given area. The game graphics are perfectly fine to me and that comes down to the character details and also the environment in which it is set in.

I agree the weekend server performance is below standard, but again, we as players know going into any mmorpg in the beginning stages of the 1st or 2nd month we are going to come across problems. I really don't accept players that use well I bought the game, it better work attitude (players have a choice, whether or not to pickup the game, players need to be more responsible and educate themselves before buying any game these days, especially a mmorpg).

Again, we are paying to play and that is understandable and we want our moneys worth, however we as players got to be smarter on making ANY mmo purchases these days and not let the hype get us by the company, the players and 3rd party affiliates.

For a independent company from North Carolina, they are doing better than most of  the big gaming companies out there. And maybe some of these big budget companies should relook at the basics of mmorpg creating by listening more to its future player base for idea's and not what they think we all want.

The world just doesn't work this way. I can understand the frustration, but World of Warcraft, for instance, wasn't very playable at start, mostly due to servers being filled to the brim and 1.5 hour queues. The first few months of a game, especially considering its server performance, are not telling for the game's success, unless they are so horrid they scare all its players away (which FE didn't, so far).

The world DOES work this way: buy a Blu-ray player right when they're released, and you know that while you paid top money and are the first to possess one, people will be laughing over your pathetic excuse for a BR player in two years time. Buy any cell phone for a lot of money, and it'll be dated compared to the cell phones released in three months time.

TL;DR by buying early, you agree to being able to experience the new thing early, but at the price of not having the best of the best straight away.

i have this to say FE has one of the best teams i seen in awhile. I been with fe for less then 14days and i have had at least 5 problums.Like all mmo's in the first few months there is a list of problums. This seems diffrent though. I had a few problums with item lost and 1 or 2 falling through maps i reported it once...Bang 2 days later a patch comes out fixing that problum. seems like every week there is 1 or 2 patchs fixing 5 or 6 problums. An not only that there support team in general for basic FAQ jumps in and responds in less then 24 hours. This company really dos care about the costumer more so then some of the bigger companys. An for graphics i see no problum with them. Some say its not shiney and lush enought but for gods sake its a game based after the nukes fly and a virus sweeps across the land and kills every one! Of course there are no lush forests and rolling hills...well there are hills but really they are just sand dunes.

O... thats easy. They just see dollar signs. Indi companys at least want the player to enjoy their game. As long as they listen to their player base this game will do fine.

Icarus have pulled off something really great here with Fallen Earth... and have you read their 1 Month State of The Game? They're actually focusing on *not making things easier* for the players. Faster travel will be expensive and limited; only between barter towns, and pricey. Respecs will be expensive and limited... They *get it* that things that are valuable or beneficial to a player's characters should not be handed over on a plate but rare, expensive or difficult to attain. I have +++ respect for them because of that alone. I really hope they keep on that track.

I'm glad to be among many of the players I've seen posting in that particular message thread as well.. So many asking that they not make travel instant... that they not make respecs super easy to get, etc. It's extremely heartening to me to see so many others who still appreciate a game where everything isn't handed to them.

There's still hope for this genre.

When a company is smaller it is easier for them to keep in close contact with their player base, the bigger the game gets the harder it becomes.

I mean Blizzard can’t give the same attention to its 11 million players like Icarus does to its 20k

You're using a pretty extreme example there, though aren't ya? There aren't many - perhaps any - other companies with Blizzard's numbers. It's far more common to see MMOs with populations in the 100-300k range spread across maybe 15 servers, versus 11 million spread across... I don't even know how many WoW has anymore lol.

Not knocking you by the way... I know you play FE and all... heheh.

Read it yesteray and was also impressed that A) they recognise the need for fast travel whe they open up more sectors but B) going to make it expensive.  One thing I realy love about this game is getting on my ATV and flying across the terrain to reach the next town.  It actually feels like you are part of the world and lets face it, you sometimes come across the best scavenging spots when you do go roaming.  Its nice to see a town in the distance growing larger as you approach and not have a loading screen with a pretty picture when entering.  I just feel they have focused on a quality game and then build it up as the subs grow, unlike most that hype up their product hoping to sell 1 million copies and then frantically fight to keep the subs on.

Anyway enough for now, need to log back in... :)

I bought this Friday and can't get enough!  The crafting system is truly a work of art, and as soon as they add player housing I'll have found what Sony stole from me years ago in SWG.

Max everything I get a constant 40-60 FPS on my 4870...  It takes a minute to catch up when you log in in town, but that's to be expected with the population where it's currently at.

    The game got soul.

    And magic.

This cant happen often and the same team probably wont pull it off in another game.

It's one of those rare things that happens once in a while.

I'm usualy very active on forums but since I started playing FE I cant find time to post even one post a day.

    The game is THAT cool.

All my free time goes in it and I love it.

The Mad Max type of atmosphere grabed me right away and that's that.

Big companies can not ever pull something like this off because of many reasons that I cant be bothered to mention right now, I'm off to play the game for a bit hehe.

    See ya.

The game is so nice that I could care less what anyone else thinks about it. It is nice to know that I'm not the only one.

The game is simply good and have dept.

Its not without faults but Icarus is doing the right thing, they don't ignore the faults, they don't ignore player complaints when they happen, they talk to people and they fix stuff people point out or they tell they try to fix it asap.

That has the result that even though the game does have bugs and performance problems, people forgive it since they know that they have a company they feel they can trust and they still have damn good fun while waiting for a fix.

The big companies are too much governed by policies to have the kind of involvement with their player base that generally make the players forgive bad things so even though they might have a more polished product then even small problems will make their players explode.

I also love that they have made a game where you really feel you are in a place and things you achieve have meaning!

Agreed, this game is a gem and this should be on shopping list for anyone missing the pre-cu SWG feel...now you can get that...AND WITHOUT JEDIS!

I usually tell people not to trust small companies but pretty much anyone playing will agree that this company is worth the trust...they've proved that they're willing to put the money where their mouth is.

    Hello

After long time of waiting on a realy good online game, finaly i found something with what i felt in love after 3 days playing.

The start was a bit hard (the game need a bit patience), realy have to workout what is all about in this game, and how it works, but after 3 days i felt like a part of the world in FE, and cant believe that a small team makes such a game that goes the right riski (not so popular this days ) way .

First i was very sceptic when i heard about FE and never give much attention ,then i read here and there (mostly this site) about the game, and it becomes every day more intersting.

Years of hyped crap ubergames, , "no metter wich one u play all the same mmrog"s"(last one was aion..played 2 days ..its no more on my HD like many others), destroyed my hope to get anytime soon a realy good game with depth, great atmosphere, freedom, with no "in 3days max lvl" , with no teleporting and loading screens (where u actualy realy feel u r a part of the world ) , with no goldspammers, good support ect ect ect.

All i can say is thank u for this game Ikarus, its not all lost in this gameindustrie as long as its possible that such little teams with brain have the heart ,imagination and courage to take the risk and make REAL MMORGs, not watching what the big guys with theyre micky mouse fastfood games do,

Sure there are things FE can, and must improve, but the game has all it needs to be a classic, a game that  gives me this overall good feel when im ingame has all credits from me.

sry for my limited english, but i felt like i have to post this..

    ..........

I had similar feelings to the post above me.  I would read an article on FE once in a while and checked the screen shots out but after so many dissapointments on big releases my logic told me how the hell could a small firm pull a game out of the bag that would be exactly what I want.  Yet after several hours of gameplay I am still dumbstruck how good it is.  It just feels right on so many different levels and 2 key areas I love the most is the huge open world and the feeling I can go off track and find wreckage and even tonight I found a dense area of uber wreckage way off the track and I felt rewarded for exploring.  Plus the crafting is right up there as one of the best.  Better sill I have made and added plenty of items to the auction house and they have all sold!  The mere fact that you don't have to level in town A then move to town B and then town C is also a big relief.  I see lot of new players having issues with this in help asking where they go next but the whole point is...get on your bike or horse and ride off into the sunset.

Regarding the graphics issue, I run everything on max and I am a complete pixel whore and graphics means a lot to me.  I am very happy with it and the avatars plus mobs look better than most MMO's but they are not cartoonish which may put people off.

I was about to quit MMO's for good about 6 months ago but now I remember why I play them.

I DID quit MMO's and went back to CS.  Then I Saw a little ad for FE on Steam, and the rest is history...

I think the best part about this game is that is immerses you like no other.

Keep running out of ammo?  Tough shit, this is the apocalypse, go make your own.

Tired of running all the time?  Build an ATV out of wreckage or GTFO.

Hungry?  How about some spoiled food or tainted drink?

Keep dying all the time?  Better get some skills, because that gun you paid 2 blue for is 12/98 condition.

Out of gas?  2 blues gets you a gas tank.

Would you like to do some drugs?  Its about the only thing that can make you forget you are in a barren wasteland.

When I first came to Terance, I looked around and said "What a shit hole"...

In my opinion one of the best things about the game is the community ,and the successful launch has had a massive help there. Look at the threads in this forum.. No massive flaming, noone QQ'ing, people recognizing and understanding the flaws, humor, and actual exchange of opinions and argumentation. Then maybe head over to the other release, Aion, and take a quick peek. Which developer do you think get the better feedback and can better serve its customers?

On a side note, I lost a 90 skill sniper rifle Sunday due to the rollback, and many others had the same experience. If it was another game threads would be flying faster than you could read them..

  • chryseschryses Member UncommonPosts: 1,453

Agree, the community is very good and quite helpful.  I even had someone today send me some rare ingriedients for free when I was yelling in auction to buy them.  Basically it seems everyone is happy to report bugs and just get on with it but then again I have not come across a play killing bug.  Even when the servers just went down now for a late service there were no flamers in global.  Nice change

The best part is that we players are quite sure we have found a mmo gem and that reflects the attitude in the game between the players and the devs :)

Had a good session on the game today and decided to go exploring. Mostly found bits and pieces but then came across a sector vault with 20 nodes around it.  The feeling of actually finding something most people haven't is a great feeling in a game and makes you want to explore more.  Plus teamed up for the first time to run a large dungeon and that was just too cool.  3 players firing long range while the rest of us charged in with clubs and swords.  Real gem
