Fantasy Looking Gear in MMORPG! Like it or Hate it? (WoW's lvl of Fastasy Gear, and Extreme Fantasy

tro44_1tro44_1 Member Posts: 1,819

Whats your opinion towards Fantasy Looking gear in MMORPGs?

In other Developing MMORPG's fan forums, I find a lot of hatered towards the idea of Fantasy gear in that game. WoW always come up, in these hate comments.

So do you hate Fantasy Gear, like WoW has or other? If so why?

This is something I would like to learn about the MMORPG community.

It would seem that MMORPG fans would like Fantasy looking gear in a Fantasy Game, but that doesnt seem to be the case.

Well, as long as they don't pull pig ass 10m swords, everything is fine.

Those armor models and characters are so overdone it's not even funny anymore. Damn christmas trees...

It can be realistic and fantasy'ish at the same time. Those just look dumb.

I'm cool with crazy ornate armour providing it "fits" the setting.

I wouldn't want to see WoW style armour in AoC.

I wouldn't want to see AoC style armour in WoW.

But I'm right there with Thenarius on the sword thing; it always annoys the crap out of me when some skinny-arse effeminate freak with the muscle-tone of part-boiled spaghetti whips out a sword that is roughly the size and shape of an Airbus wing.

You know the ones I'm talking about.

See, in my opinion, all those armour examples are GOOD examples of fantasy armour. Check out Aion or some of the Burning Crusade tier sets for some utterly bad examples.

Then again, it all depends on the setting of the game, and how good they look.

This is the kind of fantasy gear I enjoy, not over the top or anything glowing or overly enlarged!  This was my most recent FFXI character, though I've taken a break from playing it for now, mainly since FFXIV launch is still so far away!  This is the Paladin Job in a full set of Artifact Armor!

    I LOVE THEM!

My favorite class are Warriors/Fighters, always plate, and in a FANTASY game (wich i never grow tired) i want my armor to look epic, some skulls there, spikes here and some blood stains done!

BUT there WAS deceptions, in AION 50´s abyss plate armor i got repulsive, its a FANTASY game and they look more like a cyborg thing.

And the one i felt in love was this one

    with this one

SO, plate armors desing are quite appealing to me, but OFC i can let it go if the game comes with a REALLY good gameplay.

    now: GW2 (11 80s).
    Dark Souls 2.
    future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.

Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

    Regarding which armors I like...

Fantasy... Yes...  Fetish... Most of the time...

Putting the above on characters that look like ultra-happy snow-head 4 year olds from a cute factory?  Not really.

I'm all about gear that looks as over the top dramatic as possible without being ridiculous.

Sadly even though I like Judgement (the paladin armor in the first pic) it never quite jived with WOW's technical limitations.  The gold never quite looked metallic/golden enough, so they sorta looked like Ronald McDonald.  And kilt-like armor in WOW has always struggled desperately not to look bad, due to the low poly count (particularly evident during the pose in that paladin pic.)

I'm against it. I especially love the armor designs where you can see the several parts stacked up to form the armor, not just one big hunk of metal. Something like this:

I like Fantasy Gear but I prefer Asian style, Like Lineage, Final Fantasy 11, Aion...you know that type of stuff

I like the fantasy Armor. Check out some of WoW's Shoulder Amor. Mixing and matching that stuff, can make toons look awesome.

My favorite armor in any game is Oblivion's. It goes from strictly realistic to semi-realistic fantasy. The higher level armor is elaborate but maintains at least a sense of reality. I'll post a few.

    Simple, Low Level Starter Armor:

    Standard Iron Armor:

    Standard Steel Armor:

    High Level Armor:

    Daedric Armor:

    Madness Armor:

As you can see, it is possible to look cool but keep it believable.

I dont like the first one. Looks to common and realistic

I like armor that looks like fancily decorated versions of potential real life armor.

I do NOT like gigantique boxed in space cadet suits.

we should all know that cloud/sepiroth can wield such large weapons because of their mako enhancements.

If the game has exaggerated and cartoony graphics then what is wrong with exaggerated and cartoony armor?  It all depends on the art style o the game, and seeing as how there are so many MMORPGs out there with various art styles, I never understood why so many people complain about this.

    duh, it's "unrealistic" and "dumb"

So when did Unrealistic = Dumb?

Star Wars is Unrealistic, does that mean its Dumb?

    Halo Story?

    Star Trak?

My rule is it depends on the game.  Over the top games i am fine with crazy armour.  Aside from that my rule of thumb is if it can see it on a knight then it's acceptable.  The old Warhammer Knights of Bretonia are a pretty good example of what kind of armour i can put up with.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

I prefer over the top games with biga$$ armor, over the top combat and flashy spells, but when I play a game like The Witcher I don't expect any of that.

One interesting thing in many mmos is that female armor tends to protect more as more of the skin becomes visible. That is very unrealistic, but will i ever complain? nope never...

I don't like the over the top designs. Like the huge weapons. Its just stupid. Also, I hated the huge shoulders in WoW. Makes no sense. Seems far too bulky.

I loved the early EQ designs. Now they are all the same. DAoC has some nice designs, although very simplistic. I just hate the exaggerated ENORMOUS pieces.

  • IlliusIllius Member UncommonPosts: 4,142

I prefer my armor to suit it's purpose.  I never saw the point of a stealthy rogue having gigantic spiky shoulders that could be seen from space.  Not very stealthy if you ask me.  I guess I take function over form even if it's a fantasy setting.  For me the fantasy is in the various magical capabilities of the armor/weapons rather then their look.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

I like fantasy armor alot but mainly if it fits the background race and class i mean you would not have a Rogue (Wow) wearing say Plate or other Clunky pieces of Armor because it would not be a Rogue then but other then that i love Fantasy armor  if i could i'd buy a Suit of Plate mail or Chain mail
