How Blue are You?

Wow, not even an option for a real PvP model, great post.
How about 1 safe zone, the bazaar, and every other zone is open PvP? Or is that not blue enough for you
His question is for people who don't like pvp or would rather have it's effects mitigated. So your option doesn't fit.

I don't mind PvP, I just don't like it forced on me. I like to choose when I PvP. For that reason I went with the consensual/duel/arena choice.
The poll is for those who prefer to focus on non-pvp related activities, I just want to know of these models which seems the least abhorrent to the carebear sensibilities

I have a great idea, lets have a poll, but lets start out by insulting the people we're polling... and let's not be intelligent about it either. We'll just use namecalling and pretend we're all children. Yah, that'd be the best!
I'm sorry I didn't think the name carebear was offensive. My apologies. I'll change it.

lol @ carebears, ruining MMORPGs for all types of players. Look at WoW, a typical carebear MMORPG. Even on the PvP servers there wasn't any PvP because the game was so carebeared out. People don't lose exp for dying, come back and attack you even if you kill them 500x in a row.
So these games have you PvPing in safe zones, like Arenas and Battlegrounds. Then their PvE content is locked up in instances so guilds never fight each other. Yeah I'm so sympathetic for lousy carebear players, causing these companies to produce trash MMORPGs like WoW and EVE. Hasn't been a real PvP MMORPG since everquest.
The one where you enter my territory you follow my rules or die horriably.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
I'm sorry I didn't think the name carebear was offensive. My apologies. I'll change it.
Not offensive to me... Hell, I'm a self-proclaimed PvP wh0re! But I'm sure that those who fit into that category do not appreciate the term.
As someone who LOVES pvp, I'll throw my two cents in... If someone doesn't want to pvp, there's no fun in that for me. To me that's just an excuse to be an asshole.
I think pvp is good however i find it most irritating when someone just keeps killing me over and over and their level is way above mine thus making the game unplayable.
But PVP adds realism so maybe if you go around ganking people maybe your name should go on a bounty list that grants rewards for people to come get you therefor if say lvl20 thinks its funny to pick on the level 1s his name will go on a kill list and get lvls higher than him/equal come hunt him as the kill list will give rough location out in the field or exact if your in a town/city due to people seeing you and if you have a bounty on your head and someone see's you in a town they flag you which then raises it to anyone who is hunting you.
Just an idea its prob not perfect but definetly creates consiquences if you think its funny to ruin other peoples games then you take risk of it coming back to you in turn.
so lvl 20 kills 10 lvl 1's thus resulting in x amount reward of which people can hunt kill wait for respawn and kill a further 9x meaning if you grief it rewards others to grief you.
hmm could of prob worded it all better but had a long day at work.
Well I aint really a carebear but will answer the topic anyway
I like Open World PVP as a option, meaning if someone is into pvp he/she can align him/herself with a PVP tag which should have a timer on it, perhaps a 15/20/30 minute times to transfer from PVP to regular PVE which can only be used in a none combat situation, which could prevent abuse of such a system and to be able to actualy log out of the game you first need to be out of the PVP mode again to prevent abuse of the system.
I'm sorry I didn't think the name carebear was offensive. My apologies. I'll change it.
Wow what rock have you been hiding under?
i know i'm considered a "carebear" for it but i'd like to see a game with no safe zones BUT have a level restriction.nothing worse in a game than max level geared to the teeth no life celler dwellers running around ganking people 40 levels + lower than them and camping the person till they logged, because they utterly suck at pvp when fighting some one their own level. thats all tho, pvp anytime anywhere just with people at a reasonable level, even a 10 level max difference. even tho someone would stand little chance against someone else 10 levels higher they wouldn't be utterly destroyed in pvp.
like in Aion i did manage to kill some one 10 levels higher in pvp (checked the armory for his info) did it because he was an absolute noob. granted he was listed as in the top 5 for elyos but i believe it was only because of his level and how much he grinded in the Abyss. he actually was so full of himself he thought he could kill me while resting by a tower (the ones that nuke) with 3 elites there before the elites and tower could kill him. wrong, he got beat up pretty good and i chased him a long long ways before i could kill him, he kept resisting my dots, but eventually got him.
and i guess the only "safe zones" would be at quest givers like in the abyss. there are usually tesla coils around the givers and the quest givers are elites and high levels. but i have seen a raid force of high level elyos kill the givers and the coil before. but was in the lower abyss where the givers aren't max level but high for the zone. but elyos on my server seem to only be able to raid the low levels in the lower abyss, its funny tho when the low levels have enough PUG a raid and kick the high level raid of elyos' ass, noob raiding ftl i guess..lol
I enjoy a mixture of pvp and pve, but I guess I could be called a non-pvper because it is not a must in a game. The option I chose that was closest was the RvR because the best MMO experience period for me was DAoC. I absolutely loved the RvR of 3 realms there. Being outnumbered, or ganged up on by 2 different enemies was a blast. Also enjoyed the pve in the game, but mostly was in rvr.
So if the pvp is done like I like, I'll pretty much only pvp, lol. If not, I'll mostly pve with some pvp. I guess I just go with the game, hehe. Take wow for example. I mostly pve in the game. I use to pvp sometimes in open world and a lot in AV long ago. Later on, I never bothered much with the newer BGs and arena before I quit altogether.
pvp's fine, when it's concentual. the emo kids ( or those who think they are adults but are still emo kids at heart) who get off on the uncontested risk free gank of pve players are a waste of bandwidth who honestly seem they do what they do in game because they know they'll go to prison for the behaviours they seem to want to express if done IRL. (closet date rapers, ruffee droppers, jump someone on the street and stab em for kicks, pathetic wastes of human flesh really).
The reason I gave up on Aion during the last CB was watching a buddy of mine get stuck on a loading screen for 2 hours before he pulled the plug on his pc cuz a few assclowns decimated him in the abyss, found his kisk and kept going at him as he loaded in, over and over and over. fucking pathetic.
I'll jump into an arena, I'll join up for a raid call in a rvr contested zone, but the bullshit gank punks are the reason I won't touch a primarily pvp game anymore.
I'm sorry I didn't think the name carebear was offensive. My apologies. I'll change it.

Let's make a deal, the OP can use "Carebear", if he uses "PKs" instead of "PvPers"...
I picked the 3rd option.
I liked Warhammer but didn't think they separated the PVP-PVE enough. They still put PVE quests in the PVP areas.
------- END TRANSMISSION
Depends on the game.
In games like WoW where the rock/paper/scissors mentality reins supreme and every class achieves flavour-of-the-month status through an eternal nerf/buff cycle I tend to ignore PvP or treat it as an optional (consensual) extra.
Likewise, RvR games where the emphasis is almost always on "the side with more players wins" put me off; I always find myself on the side of the underdogs getting ganked hopelessly by impossible odds.
My preference is for games like EVE; open PvP with "safe"(ish) zones that one can spend 100% of ones time in while still enjoying the hell out of the game.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
That is why the 2 realms in rvr doesn't work. I was often on the underdog side in daoc, but often our realm came out on top because there were 2 other realms to deal with.
As a non-pvper who also played WAR for a while, I always thought I would have played the game much more if there were no scenarios (or even a single server with no scenarios). The open world PvP looked like it would be great as did the PQ's, but everyone was in the scenarios instead. It all seemed so wasted.
I am tired of having the PvP being segregated from everyone else inside the scenarios. I would be much more likely to participate if the PvP is part of the open world. Of course its best when there are incentives in that open world for the non-pvpers to venture into the PvP areas from time to time.
I am a non PVP but only in MMORPG's,i was a FPS pvp player long before MMORPG's.
The thing about PVP in a MMOPG is not the type,it is how it is done.I want to see an actual PVP setup and design, from everything in weapon design,to player movement,to map design. What we have right now is RPG games just adding in PVP abilities, that is the cheapest form of PVP you can design, and it is only there for one reason>>>subs.
So when i see the effort put into the PVP design,i will play it,until then ,it's a joke as far as i am concerned. One of the biggest flaws of trying to implement PVP into a MMORPG is the balance issue. It can never be balanced ,there will always be someone with better gear or a higher level,or just plain old ganking.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Perhaps this could be refined a bit. For every level under you that you kill, lets say a 20 killed a lvl 1, you subtract that many levels from the killer....so in this case the level 20 becomes (in effect) a level 2, then the level 1 can group to kill him. If instead he kills another level 1...he becomes a level one. This would encourage players to fight their own levels and stop ganking...which is not what pvp is about.
a bit like war
the winner or pker get penalised ,a bit like some recing serie in usa
if you win organisation add weight penalty to car winner up to a max
should be same in pvp if you win you should get a general debuff of x% till a max is reach to = chance
we dont like pvp because there isnt an equalising mecanism not because of the choice you gave us lol
if you get ganked and the ganker get debuff 5% each time then pvp is ok ,i wouldnt need to give my ok to pvp lol i would know eventually you d be debuffed enough ,pvp would be fun same if i retaliate against ganker i get debuffed by 5 % each time i kill him he would know we would equalised soon
At the very least give a decent reason for wholesale slaughter in the streets. The problem with unrestrained pvp is that you have a world of psychopaths where players are larger than the government or society. How did those buildings get constructed, who is selling the brooms and asparagus, who cleans up the sewer system? ...and the big question - Why would they live in a society where powerful mercenaries killed each other for no reason other than yelling "I ownz joo noob!" with no repercussion from the government or militia.
Perhaps it is a militaristic culture that prides itself on the 'kill or be killed' ethic. Perhaps the 'workers' are actually conquered peoples (yes, you are stretching for a reason at this point) However if that is true then why are players the few who can rise above those who have already fought their way to the top? Of course they must be 'special' but this feeds into the kill for no reason other than some visceral gratification.
Asking players to police themselves in an unrestrained pvp setting is more than most realms can bear. It can work but it becomes the primary mechanic of the game.
Racial factions..ok. However it would be interesting if there were a way for powerful guilds/organizations to put forth treaties that might change the racial war dynamic over time. Otherwise it is staged and static and does not address internal political strife or the notion that some players don't follow the established hate rules.
Guild/City war has the same dynamic in some respects but allows for more flexibility and adds that random factor that many love. So a system that respects the notion of existing societal/political structures with 'safe zones' can at least reflect the notion of existing rule.
All of my ramblings aside I just ask for a real reason for pvp realm-wide that assumes that everyone in the online world isn't a mindless killing drone. As another poster said (basically) - The skillset in MMO pvp is limited at best and is usually dictated by level or items. The game mechanics don't allow for much in the way of player skill or tactics. While there is some room for skill over item/level mmo pvp is best when it is group vs group or ideology vs ideology in my opinion.
(Okay monthly pvp rant done continue with your regularly scheduled pvp argument)
The PvP concept in Anarchy Online is the most reasonable, and acceptable implementation of PvP I have seen.
PvP was purely by choice, but there were some areas in the world that were FFA PvP no matter what.
Whomever controlled more of the PvP areas got a bonus to XP.
It's the best compromise for a simultaneous PvE/PvP world I have seen.
