To the OP's question... I only played a couple of weeks before I decided not to sub but my main reasons were:
First Impression: SIngle player game with a chatbox and lag.
Classes didn't seem well designed. Necro had like 12!?!? pets at times, hard to control, very dumb pet AI, sometimes they would just stop attacking for no reason.... So many pets didn't really have to do anything myself... Can't remember the "mage" class name anymore but ended up just using the same attack over and over, other spells didn't really do much different/stronger, so just same spell over and over...every fight.... The HOX seemed pretty decent, quick dps, varied skills/abilities.
AoC CC'd me and I didn't like it. Auto-target on every mob in the game? took me a while to figure out you could turn it off but for a while AoC CC'd me in every fight. Fatalities... cool except when you still have mobs to kill and you suddenly can't control your character until the animation is over... kinda lame.
Another solo quest grinder, no real reason to group.
Final impression: Single player game with chaxbox and lag.
I know anyone that likes/defends the game would flame me, but that's why I didn't sub.

If anyone flame you for being honest and providing a good explanation of why you didn't like the game they are a bit stupid. If you had said "because it sucks" I would have understood them if they flamed you. However your post is good and it does explain what you didn't like so no one can really flame you without making themself look like a complete tard.
Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC) On my radar: TSW, MO MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom
1. The game is still Buggy (As are ALL MMO's? Go ahead, show me one that does not have patch notes with big fixes)
2. End game needs alot of work (As are ALL MMO's? Show me one game that still does not need to add endgame content?)
3. Classes are imbalanced (As are ALL MMO's (ok, got me on this one...as are ALL PVP based MMO's?)
Those are the 3 things an mmo needs to keep its players around, Funcom with their buggy Dreamworld engine will never make this happen...
In other words, mr. openedge1 - learn something about relativity. The majority of normal people who expect a game that can at least run on their mid-end computers and who expect the fun factor lasting for more than a month will simply not yield to this ridiculous logic of the absolute.
I would disagree. I , for example, see a game like LOTRO being much buggier. It runs much worse on my system and looked much worse overall with a ton of boring gameplay, crappy classes and ugly models...making AoC a better game to me...thus being "relative" to my outlook.
I have enjoyed 8 months of gameplay in AoC on a computer costing 600 bucks, and see no end yet in sight.
So, as you can possibly see if you just take a second to pull your head out, what I stated is fact for any game we wish. It works differently for different people. This posters 3 core issues just happen to be something that can happen in ANY MMO is my point. So, I just wonder, how can this person play any MMO period, with a decent amount of fun. Are they willing to overlook those bugs and balance issues in that game? If so, then I believe it is other issues preventing this player from enjoying AoC and not the issues noted above. In so many words, his issues are a personal preference, and not something that can be attributed to the game itself.
I have the free trial on a disc, but I've not tried it nor will I.
Why? I've read the game has a heavy focus on PvP, which I always avoid in any form, and that there can be quite of number of group quests/elite mobs only doable by groups.
With those two things alone, they might as well have just sent me a PM that says "Don't bother, this game is not for you."
For me the game just wasnt that much fun, I played almost every class to to the low 20's trying to find a good fit for me and ended up likeing none of them. It really did feel like a single player game 90% of the time.

The game is soloable to max, even though you miss a key aspect, as the dungeons and grouping is awesome. But, this should not stop you from trying the game, because if you wish, you do not have to deal with ANYONE.
The PvP is a core focus, but I play on a PvE server and play PvP minis (my personal preference), and the gameplay in PvE is top notch, with great lore, some of the best music, and melee combat that puts other MMO's to shame. Again, a totla opposite of what you have "read"
So, why would you let a trial sit around when you could actually find these things out yourself? Please don't tell me it is because you read the MMORPG.com forums and made your decision based on that?...lol
The only one who is smart enough to figure out what a game is REALLY like is you...
For me the game just wasnt that much fun, I played almost every class to to the low 20's trying to find a good fit for me and ended up likeing none of them. It really did feel like a single player game 90% of the time.
That is because the focus IS on a single player aspect to level 20...lol
You should have went further, as Tortage equals NOTHING like the full game
It is kinda like saying I took a bite of a big mac, and decided not to eat at the steakhouse next door because it may taste like McDonalds.
Sorry, openedge1, the ancient rhetoric "it's your fault, not the game's" simply does not work anymore. Many have tried the game and many have left it due to those 3 core issues and many others. Sure, all MMOs have those 3 issues, but not in the same degree that AoC has. If you cannot comprehend that, then your fanboi logic has cut off any remaining cell of rationality.
You will be a nice replacement for Avery, I'm sure of it.

You do know they have PvE servers with PvP mini games and other optional pvp?
I play on Wicanna and have yet to PvP. I have no desire for pvp having to much fun with pve side of the game. As for heavy amount of group/elite quests. I wouldn't say so and those are optional. Yeah you get better weapons/gear in those dungeons but you can get some blue drops from random mobs.
Give the game a trial other than reading other people's opinions. You may like the game.

- Graphics are still good and the world is gloomy and cruel.
- Fatalities add a little spice
- Items look "realistic"
- Some of the zones look beautiful
Some negative ones:
- Sieges seldom work
- Community seems bad, however this could be caused by a bit low subscriber base, which leads me to:
- Grouping is hard at least on EU Crom
- New end-game content would be greatly appreciated and in my opinion should've been added already.
- Guild interface, banking and so on need an improvement
- Erling Ellingsen (Sorry, I had to add this one. This guy is probably the worst PR person I've seen in game industry.)
I'll just leave it to that. 4 good things I noticed and a few more bad ones. For me the bad ones outweigh the good ones by a big margin in terms of what I feel to be important in a game. That's why I chose to not re-subscribe, but I'll keep checking what's happening in the game sometimes.
Amazing graphics realistic low fantasy world not a 6 foot elf with a 20 foot over the top weapon in sight.
Well animated..honestly Aion is meant to be the next big thing and it looks diabolical compared to conan..but then wielding a 20 foot sword is hard to animate.
Musical Score is wonderful adding to the feel of the various areas.
The combat is for me one of the most fun I have played in many years in an MMO.
Enjoyed the raid content im not a WoW Expert which im sure they copied parts of but found the raid content a challenge if a little brief.
The Bad :
Fixed Spawn points for happy gankers
The standard of graphical presentation clearly made Zoning and instancing a necessity losing emersion points..EQ had zones but they were not initiated by an npc and had a more emersive feel to appearing in the next one even with scenary changes they had transition tunnels and so on. Zoning here was done badly.
The Economy is fairly none existant
And the Darned Ugly :
Guild cities and warkeeps should never have been implemented like this and are diabolical compared to games far older total cookie cutter crap.
Far to solo focussed espcially so early on putting off a lot of MMO players..tortage is fun once then its liking pulling your teeth out with a rusty pair of pliers. Solo player games are not designed for repeat value...and shouldnt be the basis of an MMO in my opinion..Funcoms differs.
Erling Erlingson im sorry i agree with the above poster..Gordon Brown does better PR.
I love AoC because of the fantastic endgame content, the superb crafting resulting in a booming economy. I love the sieges that run so smooth and faultless. I love the fact the the population numbers are decreasing to the point where its almost realistic not to create anymore content. I love the fact that AoC is like riding on a railway with its linear point A to B attitude. I love the community which must have an average age of 13. I love the fact that the game is nothing like what was hyped to pre-release.
Im just confused why it hasnt made the top 10 games in MMPORG.com top 10 games of 2012....surely an oversight ?
I was very disappointed in this game. Graphics and music are nice but ALL other aspects are bad. Really bad. I wasted 2 days of my life playing this piece of crap and I want those days back.

I played a trial so luckily there was no money involved.
I was one of the winners of a free copy of AOC here at MMORPG.com. I gave it a whirl, and I can say that the quest line through Tortage, and the day/night set up was nothing short of spectacular. The graphics in DX10 were outstanding.
I didn't experience much lag to speak of, but I only got up to about lvl 30 or so on my main character, and another one up to 20.
I tried out a couple other classes. My main was a necro, 'cause I thought they just looked cool. I tried out a ranger for a lil bit, and a bear shaman. Even played with a tempest of Set a lil bit.
I didn't play long enough to get the full play out of any of the classes, so I can't comment on end game, or even pvp really, though I did partake of a little bit of it.
I just never...connected with the game I guess. Might be mostly my personal tastes, I don't know. The game isn't bad, but it didn't grab me. I could just be a jaded old gamer. My friend and I were talking about it, and agreed that this could very well be what bothered me about the game.
With any game, your interest will wain if you don't make friends or get a guild, but this isn't what bothered me. I felt a disconnect with the actual playing....The spell effects didn't make me feel like I was hitting anything, they were slightly out of synch as well. When getting hit...unless I was watching my health bar closely, It didn't seem like I was taking any damage until I dropped dead.
The melee classes were a bit better, and the directional system took a little getting use to. The combos were kinda fun..but again I felt a disconnect.
It felt like I was watching a movie and pretending to control the character on the screen, but not really effecting anything that much. I can't quite place why I felt this way...maybe it was the synchronization? Maybe the animations and effects? I don't know, I can't quite put my finger on it.
Regardless, I played for 30 days and cancelled the account before I could be charged for it. Take it or leave it...that was my experience.

Thanks for taking the time to pass your thoughts on, appreciated!
I still think there is a little 'lull' between 20-40 just enough to dwindle interest. I think that could be filled by lowering crafting restrictions. Not that there is not ehough quests, just that sometimes being thrust off Tortage and then a case of "now what" pops up. It is like you don't know where to start for me sometimes.

Yeah, you could be right. Might have kept my interest a bit longer if I could have jumped into crafting or something. I didn't play at release because honestly I knew it would be a steaming pile that needed a lot of work. Playing it now, I am guessing they made TONS of improvements since release. For the most part play seemed smooth and better than I expected.
Something about the combat didn't grab me though...I didn't FEEL my character, ya know? I loved the fact that you couldn't just run through mobs and characters though. It's about time. I'm so sick of games that take that strategic element out of the equation. The few times I played in groups it was nice to be able to take my squishy caster and run behind the big tank guy and have him actually bar the path of the mobs/pvp players so I had time to cast some spells without getting pounded. On the flip side of that, it was nice to be able to really intercept people and protect the squishies in the group.
I didn't do the free trial because I paid over $100 for a sizziling steak the first time around and got a three day old half eaten egg sandwich wrestled from a wino! Until I get my sizziling steak Funcom will have to wait for me to sub or even try it for free!
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"
I didn't like it because it sucked. Maybe if they waited another year and actually fixed the game and THEN released it, it wouldn't have sucked so bad. Also, the LIE about DX10 ON THE BOX really turned me off to failcom.....and everything else they will ever touch. If they can lie on the box, what's next?
1) Raiding seemed pointless after a while knowing there was nothing to do with your raid suit other than raid the same stuff again. Maybe this will be alleviated after an expansion pack.
2) Linear, predetermined character progression wore on me a bit. I'm willing to accept that it this is not a knock on the game, but rather I did everything, saw everything, and the game just ran its natural course for me.
3) Global chat was horrendous. (I played on Set)
4) Not a knock on the game itself but more of a personal preference, I got a bit tired of the number of revamps that the game went thru. I'll let yall debate the effectiveness of those revamps - good or not - I just got a bit tired of the game going thru drastic changes all the time and having to relearn something I already knew due to changes to the core rule set.
5) I was fairly let down with the run-of-the-mill magic system Conan has after the nice melee system that was implemented.
For me it was a combination of things that I could list but ultimately it was that the game seemed basically the same to me as before. Yes there were some changes but still, a lot of glitches still there from launch.
I don't think anyone is saying it's a different game right now. What I understand it's basically the same game we had at launch but with less bugs and other issues.

My reasons are (in no particualr order):
I'm not creative enough to have a signature
I don't think anyone is saying it's a different game right now. What I understand it's basically the same game we had at launch but with less bugs and other issues.
