I think that MEO generating hype again would be no big task. They just need to shake things up.
One of the major problems, though, is that MEO has no license to the movie visuals and creative license they had. They are only allowed to pull from what is gleaned from the books. This could alienate many who have seen the movies and loved them, but never got into the books... in other words, most of your market.
EDIT: In my opinion, some visual interpretations of Tolkiens world are not my cup of tea at all. The movies had it spot on, however...
AC2 should have been the first tip-off to developers that dumbing down games to pacify the whining players who have no idea what they really want is destined to failure.
Originally posted by rentantilus Those are just the facts. As for my opinion, I would speculate that most of the above games' success is due to their marketing, not their quality. I DARE any of you to honestly claim, while holding a straight face, that SWG is a better QUALITY product than Eve Online.
SWG has 5 times the subscribers as EVE online. So yes it is more sucessful. And no it isn't marketing. If SWG wasn't a good game , then everyone would have quit after the first month.
If EVE online was so great then word would have gotten out and everyone would be playing it. But they aren't.
So if the game you are touting as the great small company MMORPG success story only has 1/5 the subscribers of the large companies, my point is proven.

You forgot to mention that EVE Online caters to a very niche type of gamer who enjoys tactical space simulation and economic simulators. SWG is just a regular 3D MMO painted with the Star Wars motif. It has wider mainstream appeal then such a niche product as EVE. EVE is a great game, no doubt about it, but it is only going to appeal to gamers who like a certain genre, no matter how fantastic it does that genre.
In my judgement, EVE has a few very distinct merits among other MMOs including an umatched musical score and graphics engine. But again, it isn't very hard to create something as beautiful as space, especially since a majority of the resources used to create anything "spacey" is just a backdrop of nothingness. Just a nicely done picture. Due to the fact that the game happens to be what it is, the servers can hold more players because it takes less power then a standard MMO.
But having said that, I still feel like 12,000 simultaneous players is still pretty darn good.
And to the poster who made the comment about Earth and Beyond: Can we really say that it was canceled "right after release" when it lasted over a few years? I wouldn't immediately think so.
Another small company that produced a huge hit - Mythic with DAOC. Small company MMOs are fun because they shake up the bisiniss with new ideas instead of rehashing the same ole, same ole.
Out of that list I HOPE D&L doesn't get cancelled. Looking forward to snowboarding off a cliff, popping a chute, and landing in the middle of some soon-to-be-dust undead. Voted for Tabula Rasa. Don't see much press on it, nor much buzz on boards about it.

SWG = big name license EVE = little marketing, mostly unkown game
The number of subscribers doesnt always have to do with quality. I think recently, within these last couple months, EVEs number of subscribers has gone up quite a bit. As for quality, I have to agree that EVE is a much more quality product, and almost all the reviews for both games back that up.
I will be extremely surprised if MEO or Mourning ever release.
MEO updates are non-existent for a looooong time.
Mourning is going thru a complete overhaul of their combat system JUST before release? Their dev team treats the community horribly. Long-time community members and game supporters are banned for voicing their cncerns for the state of the game. I mean come on. There is nothing I have seen first-hand to show that this game will be released, let alone be successful and what I've heard from RL friends is even worse.
Well, it´s true that a lot of mournings fans who post in this site are trollers/lamers and all you want to call them, but I think the Mourning community have some great people too. Btw, with the example we´ve found in this page, I won´t be surprised if someone identifies Mourning community with flammers or trolls, but it´d be false.
Originally posted by Draconus this small company thing is bull we are making FW on a 0$ budget and doing it out of the love of making games and we are not trying to compete with bigger companies...we are making this game for our community we have and ourselves.
Well you took the words outta my mouth. Thats whats so venerable about what you do with Freeworld you have many of the same goals and thoughts on your mmorpg, as I do and the team does on Crystal Atatrium.
I admire freeworlds work and continue to look forward to beta openings and new updates
So you think a game with a 0$ budget will be a s good as a game that 100 people are working on?
lol, who are the 5 numpties who voted for GuildWars?
Anyways, I voted for Tabula Rasa... I dont want to see it happen (in fact I would love for this game to becomer a huge hit) but it just doesnt seem to be getting all that much attention lately. Would suck if it did get cancelled =/

<--- It's about this time I realize I could have just dropped 1337 adena, then picked it up. Oh well...
As much as I like some of the features they are working on, I would have to say Darkfall. Updating every 3-4 months or so and still no sign of the game... However I'm definitely not saying I'm sure this game will go down (they have a large fan base on their forums), it just seems to be the most likely out of the list. Probably the next best chance would be (and I really hope it doesn't) Dark & Light. I still kind of doubt it with such a large fanbase that they now have, they just dont have the financial backing of some of the other games.
As for Face of Mankind I doubt it. Like everyone else said they just recently signed up. Matrix Online is a no, even if it doesn't turn out that well. (WB behind it...) Tabula Rasa probably wont go down with Richard Garriot and NCSoft behind it. (NC is gaining al ot of strength in the world of MMORPGs) If it does it would probably be because Garriot doesn't like the direction it is taking. And then Guild Wars has just about an equal chance of being cancelled as WOW or EQII does of being closed right now. Maybe down the road it might have to because their marketing plan didn't work out like they had hoped but I kind of doubt it.
There's no way a game like Guild Wars, which had over 400,000 accounts created at the WPE and backed by a powerhouse publisher like NCSoft is going down the drain, that game is here to stay.
Face of Mankind, well, iffy, but since they got a publisher, that makes them less likely to fall.
MXO, same deal with Guild Wars pretty much.
Dark and Light - there always is that chance with this game, but right now it's looking ok. But if they try to rush it out to their release date like they said they might try to do, they aren't going to be a very sucessful MMORPG. They have to learn that Time spent fine tuning your product is much better than a rushed release to keep your word about release dates, ask Blizzard about that.
Darkfall - haven't really heard much about Darkfall lately, so who knows, maybe.
Tabula Rosa - similar to Guild Wars, I mean, Lord British designing it, supposedly supposed to revolutionize the MMO genre, and backed by a powerhouse publisher like NCSoft, they aren't going anywhere.
I dont know... Exarch was also backed by NC and where is it today? That's right... CANCELLED!
It's pretty doubtful (IMO) that Tabula Rasa will be cancelled, seeing as it's backed by both Mr. Brit and NC, but I wont be completely shocked if it is...

This poll is surprising.
I thought Dark and Light would be way in the lead. Survey says Darkfall.
I also didnt expect as many votes for Tabula Rasa.
Wish I would of added in Mourning to the choices since that seemed to be brought up alot, Sorry.
LoL, whats darkfall. Thats the only reason I chose it. Because its the only one ive never heard of.
