February 2nd, 2010. I don't like Star Trek. I don't like sci-fi. But for some odd reason, my gut tells me this is going to be one of the best games of all time. Just a gut feeling.

I've been a Trekker for over 20 years. I only hope they do it some justice.
I'm not that optimistic with STO considering the past with CO but I hope it's at least a product that Star Trek fans can have a few dozen hours of fun... a failure in MMO-terms, but still as long as you can have these hours of fun it'll be worth the 50 bucks.
So your gut tells you to go against all your previous experiences and preferences and make a 'best of all time' prophesy?
Your gut has no brain.

As a trek fan I'll play it on launch regardless. As a mmo fan, I wonder how much depth a game can have after a two year development cycle. I'm not saying every mmo should have a five-year development, and I believe some form of rapid development can occur, particularly in land design. I just find it amazing that they could have a full blown land/space mmo in two years. Makes me think a lot of corners were cut, or they went really simplistic in design.
I feel the opposite.
I like Star Trek, I sort of like SCI-FI, but for some reason I think this game will be a disaster.
It does feel too Console like for my taste.................but we will see
It uses the same engine as CO.
I'm a big Star Trek fan. I havent' seen any features in this one I really like.
However, I hope it does at least fairly well. It's getting old seeing one MMORPG after another release and then suck.
Same engine as CO=boring small instanced zones with walls, mountains invisible walls everywere...did i mentioned ultra small instanced zones? with multi copies of eachother? single player mmo lol
Really that works pretty well for Star Trek.
If you're trying to copy the original series, what happened? You fly around in space, you get in a fight with some Klingons, then you find a planet, and beam down to explore. You piss off the local aliens, get in a fight, bang a hot green chick, break the prime directive, then beam back up.
Not like you need big areas for that.

Have to agree with that hehe

Oh wow, I havn't really been keeping up to date with this game, but from what I am seeing, it doesn't sound as pleasent as they made it out to be in the past. I think I'm just going to keep waiting for Star Wars: The Old Republic and hope it gets done right. I almost feel like BioWare is the last company I can trust.
Going by Cryptic's track record, I'm reluctant to share your feelings.
Edit: I just watched the recent game play trailer, and all I can say is "bleh."
I would love to see this game be a success, but I have a gut feeling that this is going to be the first over hyped failure of 2010. I hope they prove me wrong, but CO doesn't do much to buck up that hope.
I see a few problems:
1) At only a few months dev-time it can't possibly be deep.
2) Trekkers crave depth
3) Nothing can ever satiate the hunger of a trekker for trek-stuff,
4) and if you satisfy one, than a hundred more will be mad about whatever satisfied the first.
I will likely buy this one, and this will be the first one I have gone anywhere near after finding WOW sucked, Tabula Rasa sucked, Conan sucked, and Warhammer really really sucked. I have stayed far away from games for about two years because every one lately has been worse than those that are 4+ years old.

My gut has no brain? I don't know whats more retarded, you or the statement you made. In either case, one or the other is filled to the brim in retardedness. Anywho, the reason why my so-called gut has this feeling is because perhaps there is a part of any average mmo player that wants to see this MMO shine, because we have seen so many MMOs fail so far. Whether or not this game fails, we have to have hope that someday the MMO world will be filled with happy and joyful games that keep our money and interests for days, years, perhaps even generations to come....whatever.
Making an MMO isn't an exact science and there isn't a precise formula for success, but whatever game comes out, good GOD I hope it takes away a chunk of subscribers from WoW. That's ALL I want. I don't care if there are 9-10 mini MMOs that steal most of the money from WoW, I just want WoW to FAIL...
So ingenuity can succeed. And my gut begins to hone senses better.

Oh god. They really couldn't have put like 6 months more work in it?
I'm optimistic this game will fill my longing for a Star Trek universe:
1. They did put in two sides, Klingons verus Federation.
2. They went against forced grouping by making everyone a Captain instead of a Bridge crew officier.
3. You can explore things no one else will, such as planets in which you can name.
4. Klingon side will level differently than the Federation weenies. They will do things for various Klingon Families and PvP for leveling. Federation will do more traditional stuff like doing science projects and such.
5. Klingons will not have a Research ship class that the Federation has! Three cheers for that!
6. Each Captain will be able to train up his NPC bridge crew as he sees fit, and even trade them to other people if he wants!
Things not so clear are what the none combat (other than exploring) stuff is, after all we need downtime from combat once and a while. I'm also hopeful their is meaning full planet cities and space station to visit .
Is it just me or was this thread depressing? I can find the same discussion in just about every section here.Everything sucks today, before it is even tried. Could the game be horrible? Of course every game not yet released has the chance of being a failed project. The doom and gloom surrounding every game released or coming out, is indicative of a playerbase that is looking for something they will not find. People are chasing the dragon in other words.
Am I a trek fan ? Not in the slightest way, I do love sci-fi though. As well as enjoy a decent videogame now and then. I just do not see a single game making it in this climate, not to an extent that makes it feel massive. I also do not see very good communities coming in the future. Not with the attitude people show toward MMOs, its perfect (to their insane expectations), or fail.

What part gives you the warm fuzzy feeling?
-the console-ish design (excessive instancing, small player per zone caps, etc)
-the incredibly short ( months) beta, considering CO was in beta longer and still launched in sorry shape
-Cryptic's just launched mediocre MMO (CO) using the same engine
-the less than 3 months from launch having no details about 1 of the 2 factions
-the way Cryptic is handling its' PR
-the incredibly nit-picky fans of the IP
Yes these factors and more sound like the recipe for amazing success!
Really that works pretty well for Star Trek.

Its Cryptic. I have no faith that they will make a game with enough depth that I will enjoy playing for any length of time.
But looks like soon enough we'll find out whether its a good game or yet another failure on the MMORPG scrapheap.

Sir, you are correct. These people are nothing but trolls waiting to bash the next big thing. I admitted earlier in this thread that I too am NOT a trekkie, yet am still optimistic about this game. And what do I get for it? Nothing but a hammer to the head. Its depressing really to see people so easily ready to bash any game coming out. Honestly, I think thats why free to play games have been coming out more recently. Because there is no expectations for a free game. Developers dont want to waste billions of dollars on a game for a community such as mmorpg.com's to bash it to the ground and have it fail. Honestly sometimes, its what is said about a game that makes it fail, not so much its gameplay, dynamics, or graphics. Think Vanguard. No advertising and what do you get, two years later? a great game with a (exaggeration) 20 player community.
Its all about how we approach these games and if we keep bashing games before they come out, well, we will NEVER find that perfect game.
