BioWare makes good single player story driven RPGs. Although I personally don't like their games as much as Bethesdas games I will say they are the best at telling a story in an RPG. This will not transition well online. There will be too many chiefs and not enough indians. MMOs cannot put a select few people on a pedistal and label them as the chosen one. You are not a unique snowflake. Look at every other successful MMO: you are just another soldier or citizen of your race/faction fighting for the good of the kingdom. STO is also going to suffer from the same issue. Every player will be a captain of their own ship with an NPC controlled crew. SWG did an excellent job by making sure each player was a lowly grunt, and once they stood out by unlocking Jedi they had a hefty bounty placed on their head. This typee mechanic works well, and its a shame Crypic isn't doing something similar to allow for multiple player run ships. Soon we are going to have more popular IPs becoming MMOs just to capitalize on the power of the IP, going for the instant gratification appeal (like with SWG NGE) and allowing any newb who just subscribed to be a class that takes years of training to reach (LotRO NOT letting players become mages for this very reason) or wouldn't fit the lore at all (SWG making Jedi a selectable class).

Err Lotro is a story driven MMO.. hense the volumes of book quests...
Lotro is even more successful yet, and they basically have a Mage class (Rune Keeper)..
I understand what your thinking, but it's just "one part" of a mmo... story driven is just more of a "specific quest line" which all mmo's have..I jut think your mistaken...
I get your point, but the fact that SWTOR will have a huge story element doesn't necessarily mean that the "too many chiefs not enough indians" problem will occur. Having a story doesn't mean they are going to place you in the shoes of say Luke or Anakin Skywalker where the focus of the story is upon you.
I'm thinking the story driven elements will be more akin to something like FFXI did where there is a huge world/galaxy spanning story, but you aren't really the "star" of the show, you're just a part of it.
It will fail to the WoW type players thats for sure.
Now.... are you sure that is a bad thing?
Thing is in TOR you are just another soldier.
Just because you have story driven moments in game doesnt mean the game will play out to you being the 'one'. All the story is there for is to give you an idea of whats going on in the universe, and how you as a player fit into the grand scheme of things.
I dont see TOR failing (Failing in my eyes is the game being shut down less than a year after launch). Will the game start off with huge numbers and then settle around a smaller figure (less than 200k)? Who knows...
I see TOR doing just fine. Maybe not the best, but people will still play and enjoy it.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
Hey could you give me next weeks winning lottery numbers ? ......
" sigh " another games gonna Fail before its even released thread, I say get a life.
I don't think the OP understands the TOR design.
First of all they are making a game with a ton 'o content, like a bunch of KOTORs all in one game. So they could actually release it as a single player game, and it would be fun.
Then, while you are doing what is essentially a fun single player game, you get the option to do it co-op with other players, which will make it even more fun. Like playing KOTOR with other people online.
Then, you ad in multiplayer dialog. The NPC says, "Ok, you want to blow up the ship and kill everyone aboard, or dock the ship and save everyone aboard?" Then it's not each "snowflake" that gets to make this decision, but a group concensus.
You each get to answer:
Save
Destroy
Save
Save
Destroy
Save
Ok, the Save's have it, the ship gets docked the people are saved, and you get the next part of the RPG to play based on that.
The next time you play, the players may vote to destroy, and you see that outcome.
So no, in this design the "grind for a Jedi" feature doesn't really work.
I can only pray.
I do see a lot of players chosing Jedi right off the bat but i don't see it failing either.
I knew immediately when SWG was announced and I looked at the features there was no way to make a massive game, and make some class 'rare".
WTF I wondered, how are they going to do that and make a fun game?
Was it going to be random so people re-rolled and re-rolled till they got a Jedi?
Nope, turns out it was just a crappy game mechanic of grind every skill in the game to unlock Jedi. Do the most boring thing we can think of to get the cool character.
Bleh, what a horrible design. It was always doomed to failure.
OP makes an excellent point.
People aren't supposed to be playing heros when realistically they are just one of the masses.
That is why THE OFFICE ONLINE will be the next WOW-killer.
SW:TOR will fail. Heres why:
Lucasarts
/thread
"There is only one thing of which I am certain, and that's nothing is certain."
Here is why you Fail.
Because i said so...
From my point of view thats only because ppl have that pre-conceived idea of how cool is to be a jedi/sith warrior.
I can almost bet that after 6 months in the market the class population will be pretty much balanced after ppl realizing that the jedi's are not better than the others. Most ppl are just going to fall to their usual playstyle, ranged, caster, support, healers etc.
I dont think this will be a cause for the games failure
I get to be the boss.
thats not the office, thats a remade version.
That cant beat the original british version, far from it...
There has to be at least one WOWkiller before there can even be a next one.
But if there was to be a wow killer The Office would be it.
I will admit that the british version is funny, the american version is just overall a lot better, no slight against you or anything, but after watching both of them, again, and again, I feel theres just a stronger story element in the american version (in regards to the characters specifically). Of course, in most cases people say the original is always best, in my opinion, it is not the same in the office.

I tend to appreciate much more british humour rather than american humour. Still, thats just my opinion ofc, maybe because I am european.
But lets not hijack the topic here =P
A derp derp derp. You sound like the people with their 2012 doomsday theory mumbo jumbo. You won't know till the game is out, stop trying to kill the greatness that is this game in your mind in fear that you will be wrong.
Oh goody goody gumdrops! Another this game will fail thread.........
( Darth Vader engeges Raving Rabbid in lightsaber to plunger duel.....Vader retreats! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH)
All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care.
Playing: ESO, WOT, Smite, and Marvel Heroes
I think the game will fail because they're gonna force you to max out an ewok or gungan jedi before you get access to other races/classes.
Hmmm did you get this from the umpteen other posts that try to state the exact same thing you do? If not here's a hint go back into the SWTOR forums and find the other few dozen posts that are basically saying the same thing you are and then just add to that instead of making an entire new thread for us to shoot down and debunk. I'm glad you have an opinion and I'm also glad that you aren't a conformist you are forward thinking enough to realize that neither one of the most respected companies in video games nor one of the most sought after ip in video games is going to be enough to save this project. While you are on the subject please enlighten us as to what you think is going to be a success so that we don't make the mistake of trying this game that is going to so obviously fail for the quite obvious reasons you state above....
In all seriousness though you have alot of facts wrong in your post. first off LOTRO does not have mages not because they are too special and everyone will want to be them (which is a dumb point anyway considering so many other games have mages yet those games are not dying simply because everyone is playing a mage) the reason there are not mages in lotro is because Tolkien does not have mages/magic in his world so it was them trying to be true to the lore and guess what people wanted it so bad they used the first expansion to create what amounts to a mage class and for the record there are not alot of Runekeepers played in lotro.
Now as for SWG do you honestly think they made Jedi a hard unatainable class because it was special? Again you are wrong for one there is no single concensus on what opened the jedi slot because by the time Jedi began to roll around they got exposed for not ever until then having it in there but telling people to keep trying to unlock a class that was not even in game then they immediately made Jedi a class attainable by a quest series.
I'm left to wonder where some in the community get the idea that you are playing an average person who is nothing special in the game world if that was the case we would be NPCs. Our characters do not as you try to compare them to compare favorably to the npcs that litter the game worlds we in fact compare to the millions of real life heros who fight fires, defend our countries, and uphold our laws and if you look at it in that sense maybe you can get a better understanding of it. Basically most of your logic is flawed as I don't think that is the way any of these games are designed nor do I think the things you list are what alot of these companies have in mind when they design games.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
My opinion is fact, the rest of you are idiots GOD.

Sure you can make an mmorpg with a rare class. Look at CoX and the unlockable classes. What I think people rail against the most, is alpha classes in those situations. Although, some people will find a way to complain about anything.
With Bioware behind the plate and the amount of Star Wars fans out there TOR is basically a sure success imo. Fans will play it no matter how bad it is (im sure it'll be good though)
I likely won't bother with this MMO because I dont care for Star Wars much but theres no way TOR will fail. Hopefully its as good as everyones hoping!!
"I play Tera for the gameplay"
