Star Trek Online: Bridge Access Granted!

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Fans everyone cried out in disappointment when Cryptic Studios crushed their dreams of hanging out on their ship's bridge with other crew members when it was revealed that the feature wasn't going to make it into the game (at least not for launch).

Today, however, things have changed! Cryptic Studios has revealed that bridge gameplay will indeed make it into the game for launch, and will serve as a social hub where players can socialize with others. As an added bonus, the bridge will be customizable, to an extent, with players being able to select from around 20 different bridges for their ship.

    Very cool!

That also implies that you can now have more than one player onboard your ship, which is a good step forward! Now, if they would just make it so you could have lots of people onboard all controlling different things....

     +1 point for me

I'm impressed, and it looks like the fans finally recieved one of the things they have all been wanting. It isn't the ability to walk around the entire ship, but it is a small step in the right direction.

Hopefully you can have a large number of players it would be a nice place for Fleet meetings

I can feel your anger. This game is defenseless. Take your weapon. Strike this game down with all of your hatred, and your journey towards towards the Dark Side will be complete.

Nice work cryptic, now invent replicaters. Tea! Earl grey!.....Hot!

Nice but, I hope they get the scale right.

Looking at that pic it seems like the characters are very small and the bridge.... even the captains chair looks like it was made for a giant!!!!!

Scale people.  Get the scale close to what a ship's bridge looks like.  If THAT is an issue I can only assume there will be a lot more problems with this game......

Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

Going from single-player starships to having them controlled by multiple players would be a GIGANTIC change to gameplay.  That's not exactly something that can be changed in a patch.

They describe the bridges as a "social hub."  How does that make sense?  That seems more like what you'd be doing in 10-Forward than what you expect a starship bridge to be like.

For the most part I have had nothing but negative things to say about STO so far... but this is definitely a step in the right direction. And evidence that they may actually be listening to us after all.

I'm all for giving credit where credit is due. Way to go Cryptic!

I don't think I'm impressed by this news.  It's just being used as a "social hub".  If that's the case, I would rather them add the bar where Whoopie can sell me a drink and tell me how to solve the problem of the week.  Better than nothing I guess....but still, I want my Whoopie.

Just.... awesome. Now I really hope we can do combat from bridge view, or atleast let  players have additional roles, like possibly take the place of one of the bridge crew. Maybe one player is in charge of the shield systems while the player who owns the ship can still control the weapons and thrusters

While I applaud this decision I don't believe for a moment it will keep me playing longer than I would have otherwise.  Now if this was a real star trek experience wrapped in a game, then I'd play until the servers went offline...since it's not...I'll sub for a couple months most likely.  And that's being generous because while the game is likely to be bad...it is star trek.  I owe it at least 2 months.

Indeed.  It's not just the chair that's giant compared to the characters it's the entire bridge.  I can't understand why people take beloved franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars and pull this cliched artistic design crap.  8 ½ heads tall blah blah blah.  NO!  Make it proportional.  Proportional design will never go out of style like the garbage of a giant lightsaber in a tiny hand will!  MMOs aren't games you just toss on the shelf and that's it.  It will be played by people for a decade plus if you're lucky and the artistic choices you make now will reflect on your game forever.

and what if you cheif medical officer is out on a bender? No keeping ships controlable by one person with "guess stars" is a far better scnanrio then "guild ships"

I think this is definitely a step in the right direction.  I'm a huge Star Trek fan but some of the design decisions have left me scratching my head.  Ofcourse, I will reserve judgement until i get the game in my greedy hands.

I have been critical of Cryptics decsions as well, but I will give credit where credit is due.  This choice has definitely improved my position regarding the game. Along with a skill-based system, this game is now back on my radar.  (But I must caution that it is my hope they do even more with space ship interiors, and that this implementation is but the first step -- a good first step mind you.)

I agree with this to a certain degree. The game still isn't on my radar until I get confirmation that RMT won't be used. That's the last point on my list that needs to be checked off.
