The funniest thing is the thing that make Aion a WoW clone where in games like EQ,DAOC and UO which predate WoW.Funny don't you think
Not possible, Halo invented FPS. Doom is a Halo clone.
L2 and WoW are surprisingly close to each other. As much as Aion is a L2 clone, it's a WoW clone as well.
reading the first line I assumed you were being sarcastic... but then the second line sounded like you are being serious.... so I am puzzled.

Are you serious? Doom, Quake and many other fps came out way before Halo.

AION is a game that was marketed as a PvP game, yeah right. AION is just a carebear game masquerading as a PvP game, just like WoW is.
Tell me how a carebear game like AION is PvP when the PvE is locked up in instances, when there are level reqs for attacking other players, where you cant attack your own team, where you cant PvP in certain zones.
Faction vs Faction Warfare? Carebear. Any decent PvP game uses a Guild vs Guild model.
AION sucks. And the quest system is basically a WoW clone.
Maybe you will like it if you like carebear games with no challenge, or if you're a bot

WoW doesn't cater to be PvP, ye of little knowledge.
And less use of "carebear" might make your post more plausible too.

There are a lot of doom and gloom concerning Aion these days, and I feel particularly today. It is being compared to the last to hyped not so big successes; AoC and WAR and sometimes to L2 due to bots etc. To be said is that people think it is worth while giving this game their attention; any news is better than no news. I guess the attention it gets is typical for the MMO community. Hype and interest before launch, doom and gloom afterwards. And it is for the game to prove whether it can withstand this mentality of doomsayers before the first critical 3 - 6 months are over. So is Aion a triumph? When it comes to attention, for the time being: yes. When it comes to comparison with AoC and WAR, it seems far more well prepared and polished so I think Aion will far better then them. There are bots and gold sellers. Never played L2 myself. But the situation in Aion is at best irritating for now. Aion is not a WoW clone, in fact it is not a clone of any game, it is more like genetic design. They have taken little bits and pieces from all major MMOs and put them all together with a highly polished yet rather superficial touch. All in all I think so far it is a rather pleasant game, easy to like, but I fear also rather easy to forget.
You know I keep hearing people mentioning the bots and it has never been a problem for me. They shouldn't be in the game period but it hasn't gotten to the point of say Silkroad (yet). I suppose the situation might be different on other servers but on Lumiel the spamming is minimal. About a month ago it was terrible. I have been on for hours upon hours without seeing any spamming. As far as the issue with bots kill stealing... you can change channels, or out dps the bot and steal the kill from them. I did that quite a few times just for fun.

From the trailers I had seen and what I had read Aion was marketed as a PvPvE game. It feels more like a PvE game with PvP as an afterthought. The PvE that I experienced in the game wasn't instanced, unless by instanced you mean the channel system... which I think is a pretty nice feature because you don't have to wait for respawns and if the area is swarmed with players you can just change channels. I don't get where not being able to attack your own faction is that big of a deal, considering the otherside has the same classes as yours and the storyline is based around two opposing factions of players and one pve faction. I've never been in guild vs guild wars but I do like the idea a lot. What are some good guild vs guild mmos out there?
Anyone else getting tired of seeing "WoW clone" used to describe a game? I don't see where the quest system is that much different in most of the mmos I've played. I didn't even bother with quests once I lvl'd to around 16. Just the campaign quests that needed to be done to unlock nifty titles that gave you buffs and those campaign quests needed for the games progression (i.e. the Ascension quests, Abyss quests, etc). I got better experience from just grinding mobs.

Some people (not mentioning any names) think their chosen game playstyle preference makes them "badder" than other players, or cooler somehow. Hence they freely toss around the term "carebear" and the like. I assume it comes from having a small epeen in real life.
But back on topic, depends how you define the word "triumph" I suppose. If it was supposed to dethrone WOW in total subs, no, won't do that. Will it be a financial success? Latest published financial's seem to point that way, especially when compared to recent NCSoft games like TR.
It currently had about 34 servers and few seem to be in any real trouble, but its still early, we'll see in 6 months if they are all still strong and vibrant, or will there be talk of consolidation?
I've heard the game has a crashing problem in the sieges, if that's still true, lets hope they get that cleaned up. (My highest character is level 23 so I haven't experienced that aspect of the game.)
Is the game a grind? Not so far, but again, I hear level 35 gets much worse.
Its my 2nd month, I still enjoy playing it, that's good enough for me.
Just trying to live long enough to play a new, released MMORPG, playing New Worlds atm

My opinion: Aion sucks dick, player base consist of chronic fanboys and dumbasses, I used to be one of em.
@people defending Aion: it's probably going to be a better argument if you don't use "MMORPG forums hate the most popular games", because that just make you look like a dumbass, which you are. in all honesty. Maybe throw in some facts too, or good reasons why you like the game and such, don't just go "LOL YOU HATE AION, YOU MUST BE TR0LL".
Aion requires grinding on the same mobs for pointless reasons.
Other MMOs, no games in general are grinding. What do we all basically do in our games? Kill. Kill and kill until we get a level up or ability. What makes it entertaining is the reason behind it and how it is implemented to make it fun.
Aion forgot that part, it basically tells you to, "Go kill stuff". That's it. Theres no motivation behind it, just an empty pretty looking shell that would look nice sitting on a shelf. If you enjoy the game, then by all means, keep playing it. But if you can't come up with valid reasons that make it stand up well against what's been done before, then your only kidding yourself. Because in about 6 months of so, you'll say, man this game sucks, What's the next "flavor of the month" MMO I can play to satisfy my addiction?
MMORPGs are going through growing pains right now. It's the hardest genre to develop for, and probably one of the newer genres.
We are all really looking for a good MMORPG to play. We wouldn't say Aion is garbage for nothing. If it was literally ground breaking and impressive, we wouldn't be sitting on this forum discussing the pros and cons about it. Were not hating on the game just to do it, we want something good to play also. Aion just doesn't cut it for a lot of people.

I see by your posts that you are new to discussion sites.
If yo uhave followed MMORPG over the years you wil lsee that the present day games are hyped talked about everyday for little reason. When FFXIV is released you will see several posts on that game for a few monmths until another game comes along.
I would bet Blizzard could release a total lemon for a new MMO and it would recieve unjust hype, and tons of posts.Even SOE with so manmy hating on them will recieve a lot ,heck ALGANON because it is new is recieveing far too much caht discussion, does that mean Alganon is a gereat game?Remeber the 3 months beforre Warhammer and DF ??tons of chatter,it means nothing other than there is nothing else to discuss for the time being.
Part of this problem is because games thin kthey have some secret that they don't want to let out of the bag, then we see their finished products and it's like wtf?they needed an NDA for that crap?it's almost laughable to see all these NDA"s for garbage products.

Channels are an idiotic idea. How can you put a channel/instance in an MMORPG and call it an MMORPG? There's no interaction with other players. You can have 5000 people in the same exact spot and the players won't even see each other.
Channels are a cheap way of providing less content and getting away with it. Games like Everquest didn't need channels, because they had more than 1 leveling area in a zone. You could level anywhere you wanted..
I'd rather share zones and have there be a high demand for certain areas than have things put into fucking instances. I can't believe MMORPGs are instancing things, and people are actually playing it...
Why even play an MMORPG if you want to have channels/instances? Go play a stupid RTS or diablo 2.
Then PVE Content being instanced, what would you even fight other guilds over in an MMORPG if you had your own copy of everything? PvP would be meaningless in an instanced PvE game (see WoW)
EQ had some PvP servers that were FFA PvP. It's dead now, and now we have carebear MMORPGs like WoW and AION with their meaningless PvP systems.
Why does every new MMORPG have to have the same quest system as WoW?
Here is how an MMORPG's PvE should be: You go talk to certain NPCS, they tell you some potential leveling locations.
I really hate how leveling in MMORPGs is driven by meaningless quests. I'd rather there be a choice of N zones available, and I just go to whatever one has the loot / exp I want. Why should I be forced into doing idiotic quests that have no relation to the game. They are just there for the people who can't figure out good leveling spots.
The problem with the system is that it forces you into doing the quests, which are meaningless and there are too many of them. If you do not do the quests in WoW or AION, then it will take you 3x as long to reach the same level. You're basically forced into doing whatever the quests want you to do. You can't just go grind the instances you want for gear because it would be worse exp than grinding quests.
People need to figure out on their own where they want to level. Sick of these stupid quest-for-level systems they put in every WOW cookie cutter MMORPG.
EQ had the right leveling model. Lots of exploration, no guidance at all from NPCs. I think that is what makes MMORPGs fun, doing what you want without being forced into quest-grinds.
Anything that provides the ridiculous amount of questing like in WoW and AION or TR (good thing that piece of shit game died, another failure NCSoft game).. anything with that amount is a WoW clone in terms of the quest system.
There are a lot of doom and gloom concerning Aion these days
Justifiably. It's a copy-paste of all the worst features of Korean F2P games, mashed up together with the blandest quests and the most derivative MMO levelling systems known to mankind, where you can hit 50 les than two weeks after launch. Same old same old, made to look pretty by buying some other company's graphic engine. They should market it as a cure for insomnia, it has such a high snore factor. I played games more inventive than this five years ago.
I love how people keep saying it feels like a cheap korean grinder. None of you would be saying that if you didn't know beforehand the game was developed in Korea. The game uses a western style of gameplay and the grind? Are you kidding me? The grind in games like Everquest and Vanguard dwarf that of Aion, the first 2 people to hit the cap took only about 2 weeks. That is a grind now? Hah. Aion will continue to do well. There is still very popular in asia after a year and there is no reason to assume it will be any different here.
You and I do not share the same opinion of what a Grind is. You and a large number of fast satisfaction MMO, WoW generation gamers consider grinding related directly to the time it takes to level. So, if you can reach max cap in 2 weeks, it must not be a grind, right?
Wrong.
To me a grind is when you mindlessly kill x of this y of that or just grind away killing mobs without the veneer of crappy Aion-style quests to level. That is all Aion, especially is, silly quests meant to make you think you are not grinding. Vanguard, (and other games that actually have a nice PvE experience) by comparison have rich, interesting quests and settings in which to play them.
So what if takes longer to level, it about the gaming experience, not the Aion/WoW styled rush to 'end game'.
So how is this different from wow or lotro? despite lotro's main quest line, a good amount of lotro quests, especially with mines of moria are the same "go kill x of y" quests.
Aion does have more in common with wow or lotro as it is a quest based game. If people don't like how they've done the quests (and I have to agree, they are rather bland with the exception of main quest line) then that is a fair criticism. But it is in no way an asian grind game.
I've played Lineage 2 for over 4 years and besides the pvp portion of the game, gameplay consisted of going to one area and killing mobs until you were ready to log off. There weren't a lot of quests and even the quests they did include had quite a bit of tedium. I consider games like L2 grind games. Aion is a quest based game. It seems it has mostly kill x quests but again, I experienced a LOT of that in wow or lotro. Heck, even Vangaurd.
edit; as far as the op's qustion with regards to "how is it a triumph", I don't think it is a triumph. I don't think many games would be considered triumphs. Or perhaps it is just subjective?
Or does it go off of long term success? Then Eve and Wow could be considered triumphs. People may hate them but they do what they do well and will have long term success.
I don't know if Aion will have long term success but I don' think it will go the way of the dodo. At least not for several years.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

I would love to have gaming be about the actual gaming experience instead of the rush to the end game.
What I'm tired about is the constant hypocrisy and cultural bias on this forum.
vanguard does not have rich and interesting quests, Vanguard has go kill XX or go find XX quest, just like every other mmorpg out there.

I'd like to see more EQ clones
Now that you actually explained yourself I have to say I agree with you.

2 weeks of 24/7 gaming. If you would play 6 hours a day it would mean 2months.
To topic. AoC and WAR was built on already known/familiar worlds. So there was more expectations to be met. Like AoC is cruel and bloody world. WAR is also about constant war between races.
As far as I know Aion has its own built storyline, world and everything.
Game isnt bad overall, it is polished to some degree, but it doesnt implement anything new to MMORPG. Or at least I dont see it.
Actually he played about 15 hours a day, so that would mean about 1 month of 7 hours a day, maybe a little more.
So there you have it, you can reach the cap in little over a month fairly easily. So unless you see mmorpgs are short time investments, the game isn't much of a grind.
This is all before the enormous XP boost many quests will get in a planned update.
Obviously you have no idea what grinding means if you think it is about how long it takes you to hit level cap.

Some of you should really look into using a dictionary and look up words before you use them. Lets start with the word "clone"
When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.

Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
I don't think Hyan was being serious folks. Way to get indirectly trolled.
Lol AION is a triumph now?
I sense some anger? The way you write shows your bias, rather skewed response I must say.
I sense some anger? The way you write shows your bias, rather skewed response I must say.

It can't be to much of a grind, I play extremely casually and I'm 42 already. No rush to get to 50
I see by your posts that you are new to discussion sites.

What I'm tired about is the constant hypocrisy and cultural bias on this forum.
vanguard does not have rich and interesting quests, Vanguard has go kill XX or go find XX quest, just like every other mmorpg out there.
