I thought this could be a fun thread. It only really applies to people that have been playing for 5 years, but I guess new-comers could answer as well ...
Knowing everything you know about World of Warcraft up to this point (expansions, past-patches, nerfs, buffs ... everything), going back 5 years, would you even bother buying this game?
I think we can all agree that WoW is a huge time-sink and pretty addictive, but have these past 5 years been worth it? I see a lot of threads about how people believe everything past the Burning Crusade pretty much ruined the game. What are your thoughts?
This thread is in no way meant to be a flame against the game. I love WoW; I've played it off and on for 5 years. I'm just curious as to what other people think.

I'm sure alot of people would argue, but I believe it to be the best MMORPG ever made. And one of the best PC games of all time. Given all its shortcomings, I would still and do still play the game, because there are plenty of things to like about it in my opinion.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
nope. $15 a month is cheap entertainment in the same way that rent-a-center has cheap furniture: over the long run you end up spending waaaaaaaay too much on it.
from now on it's f2p or microtransaction games for me. gw2 and swtor should keep me busy for a few years.
have a blessed thread.
Well, if I could erase the "farmed that 100 times" feeling of raids/arenas, then yes.
Vanilla felt like a true MMO, BC raiding was great fun and even arena(I prefer SL/SL locks compared to today's burst honestly).
WOTLK was probably made with the casual concept in mind(PvE with hardmodes, PvP with so fucked up HP/damage ratios resulting in higher "lolgloballed" chance, Homogenisation, Tanking nerf/overhaul, etc).
If I'd knew what WOTLK would be like, I'd probably stop playing right after 3.0 was released tho, but I'd still play Vanilla and BC.
well i don't think its been 5 years yet, i haven't played in 6 months but i wouldn't change playing for just over 4 years for a second.
I had the most fun in a video game playing this game, only thing that came close was Counter Strike back in the day. This is still hands down the best mmo out there right now, only reason i don't play anymore is damn it had been just over 4 years how long can you play the same game for.
-Wow was best MMO ever made (old wow that is) and no i would not buy it if i did know what would happen with it because blizzard ruin it with their casual BS.
5 years ago i made the best descision of my life, buy WoW, after all mmo's i've been through i always sticked with WoW.
because,
well,
because, i like to have fun
5 years ago... it was pure awesomeness.
The very first PvP experiences in world PvP were enjoyable, battlegrounds... well, they were allright, but I enjoyed world PvP alot more. Ganking some questing hordes with my gnome rogue, great times indeed.
While not revolutionizing the genre, WoW has consolidated existing offerings (i.e. game concepts and mechanics) into a single, smooth, polished and somewhat complete package that the masses could afford to play (lower rig spec), understand and enjoy. Over the years, Blizzard successfully expanded on its original concept and supported by a reasonable lore it managed to add value to the environment through new and updated capabilities.
I played for 3 years, almost from start. I left as BC did not cut it. To me it was a sign that Blizz was fully aware of their market dominance and did not have to invest so much into engineering anymore, it just needed to "refresh" and deploy content (not new capabilities) to keep enjoying a nice revenue stream. I came back when WotLK came out, and I did enjoy it for a few months... but then again I lost interest.
What will be very interesting is the new MMO from Blizz. This time around a simple refresh will not cut it, as market share has eroded and they are well aware that with a product that is 5 years old it will be difficult to compete for the next 5 years (out date engine, problematic class balancing so late in the life cycle).
I bet my right hand that Blizz will be surprising the MMO community by going into a direction that most cannot imagine. They will want to innovate rather than consolidate and polish. Time will tell...but the future looks exciting.
When I started playing this game it was amazing. So amazing I can't put it into words. The time I spent on this game was definitely worth it. I still believe the game was and still is the best MMORPG ever. The only reason I gave up on WoW was lack of time.
To answer to OP's Question: Yes.
I had lots of fun with WoW.
I still like the game, but I do find I get easily bored now.
I got WoW the christmas after it came out, and just quit 3 days after Trial of the Crusader came out. I LOVED WoW in vanilla, hell i remember just being 60 was an accomplishment, and i didnt know what raiding was for quite some time. BC was awesome too IMO. Was hard (at least harder than it is now) but with enough time u could at least get into some starting gear to start raiding and work ur way into getting geared enough to raid with a decent raiding guild. ZA was hard and awesome. I played during WOTLK, and became HORRIBLY bored since they took so long to release something after naxx. i farmed naxx forever. Ulduar came out and i had some fun. I was well aware that blizzard was starting to handing out epics, but at least Ulduar still seperated the EXTREMELY nooby from the not so bad players. but as soon as blizzard allowed players to farm T8 25 man chests and helms i had to leave. People were getting gear far too easily, and being Full T8 was no longer an accomplishment, at least it didnt feel that way. When i saw some new 80 with the 25 man T8 chest and a bunch of other emblem items, i was so disheartened. I had to go through the stupid SKG loot system and finally got my piece after raiding forever and spending my emblems on the helm. Worked forever to get it from Hodir, and this new 80 got it for doing heriocs. Thats when i had to leave. All this being said. Would I have bought wow knowing that it was going to be this easy later on? definately. all the way up to TotC i had a blast with my friends. THe game was fun, but it just became easier and easier, and basically more of the same. I have been thinking of going back. But i might just wait for cataclysm or the next blizzard mmo. Good times in wow.. BEST MMO EVER when looking at it over its lifetime (not just looking at it in its current state). I wish the game could reset back to BC lol. time to stop reminiscing about the old days and get back to RL. lame....
I'm sure everyone else can agree with me: we've all quit at some point for other games, but there's always that empty feeling you have when playing another MMO. You miss Warcraft. I've been around the block a few times and I've seen what else is out there, but let's be honest ... nothing compares.
One of the main reasons I asked this question was because I'm debating on whether or not I should come back to the game I once loved. I haven't played since the beginning of the summer due to time constraints, but now that I'm finding I have more time to myself, Warcraft is looking more and more like a possibility again. Sure, we've had our ups and downs, but I really did find that I had a lot of fun playing this game.
To those of you that miss vanilla WoW: if Blizzard offered a vanilla-only server, how many would reroll?
Vanilla servers or Advanced servers ( those without all the changes Blizzard implimented to make the game easy )would make me re-roll . Both types of servers would most likly attract older players . What i missed most about WoW at the end was the community . I m really glad i got into lord of the rings online while i was still playing WoW . still a great community in that game and i also enjoy playing the new games that come out .
5 years ago my gaming advice to myself would be to play 2 years and give up and not stay in the hope things would improve .
You play a game for achievement? You talk as if the game tortured you but you enjoy simply because you feel achievement done after you finally got that loot that eluded you for so long. I am pretty sure you do enjoy the game, just the way you talked put too much stress on the "achievement".
Yes, I agree that loot is now easier to get that vanilla days. But still it is not true everyone can easily get the best gear. In vanilla WoW days, blue gear is great and epic is godly. Today, everyone got some epics, but there are many shades of epics, it is the item level of epics that makes some more godly. Take Wotlk. Epic gears goes from item level 200 to 258 now. Seriously for the same slot, a ilvl 200 epic armor simply cannot compare with an ilvl 258 counterpart. Trying to get ilvl 245+ is still relatively harder.
I have no wish to see everything roll back to BC. WoW has gone a long way, and has progressively changed to appeal to gamers with more and more diversed playstyle. I like that.
If I could go back 5 years, I would have picked up wow on day 1 and avoided the pile of garbage that is EQ2.

WoW appeals to just about every type of gamer to hardcore to casual. Thats why it has been so successful. Also theirs nothing wrong with not liking the game.
Absolutely.
I had a lot of fun over the years with WoW, and I thought Burning Crusade was pretty good, too. It was Wrath that burned the game down for me. But how does that change the fun that I had with the game for the first few years? It's not like I ever expected that I would play WoW forever, and I even still like playing now once in a while for old times sake.
I agree with Palebane. Despite all, it is (or perhaps was) one of the best games I ever played.
Just barely under five years ago, WoW launched. My guild from CoH had decided to move. I played for 2 weeks, uninstalled and canceled my sub.
I haven't played WoW in almost 2 years, but I would definitely still have bought it. It was my first MMO, so it will always have that "special place" among all the other MMOs.
I'm one of those people that thought BC ruined WoW. Vanilla was awesome, challenging and a lot of fun. Open world PvP was a blast and people did it for the fun of it and not to get 1337 gear and titles and crap.
Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
I started shortly after launch, and I got addicted very quickly. Knowing what I know now, I regret ever starting. This game honestly ruined my life. I played 12+ hours a day, quit college for 3 semesters, lost my job, gained 50 pounds and basically became as pathetic as the southpark caricatures.
I know for most people the game is simple entertainment, but for me it was a vortex that swallowed every waking moment of my life. It changed my personality, and I would do everything I could to ensure the maximum amount of play time. Starting the semester after I started playing, I began cutting back my class load until I finally just didn't go for 1.5 years. I cut my workd schedule to part-time by request, and looking back on it I got myself fired on purpose.
I moved in with my grandparents because I knew they would give me less flack for not working or going to school, and would make me feel less embarrassed about my situation. After a year and a half of dodging any form of responsibility, I got a dose of tough love and started school again but the damage was done. I was over weight, apathetic, lonely and still hopelessly addicted.
I spent my junior and senior years still playing 8+ hours a day with no social life, and the judgmental eyes of my entire family boring holes into me. After graduating, I managed another 6 months of jobless, 14+ hours days.
Finally, I had enough. I uninstalled, sold my account, and actually managed to find a good job with my degree. It was like a cloud lifted from my eyes and I could see all I had given up. In the end, I lost years of my life (probably what would have been the best years) in pursuit of the next tier of non existant loot. Was it worth it? To steal a line, It was so far from worth it, it would take it would take 5 billion years for the light from worth it to reach Earth.
I'm not sure why, but this thread really got me think about the last few years/. This is probably the most honest I've been with myself about this game. It disgusts me to look back on the last 5 years, but now with the haze of wow gone, I can ook forward to the next 5.

Fully agree with everything you said.
At least your honest enough to admit it. Most hardcore gamers won't own up lol Personally I was similar for about a year awhile back and quickly changed my gaming schedule to avoid it conflicting with real life.
When it really comes down to it, real life lasts forever...MMOs are only pixels.
"I play Tera for the gameplay"
5 years ago, WoW was the best, vanilla has the best pvp experience, yada yada
today, WoW sucks with all the tweaks and changes yada yada
no, that's because you've played for five freaking years. I couldn't even stick to a game for more than 6 months and still have great fun
I played for about 3 years from launch and all I really have to say is that I'm glad I was playing when I was in high school. I never let it interfere with any homework/projects but WoW was pretty much the only thing I had on my mind, mostly. I probably played from like til I got home til I went to sleep.
Sorry. I guess some of us don't have ADD
