They could do what Square-Enix (supposidly) did to a fanmade Chrono Trigger sequel: Wait until its ready for release and pull out the lawyers.

I don't know what Im more sick of: Generic asian grindfest click-to-move MMOs (Aion, L2, RF) or Generic sandbox completely player run UO wannabe Euro MMOs (Darkfall, Mortal Online, Ryzom).

OMG 3 whole games! only 2 of them released! your being sick of sandbox mmo's is SO justified since there are so few WoW clones and theme park games.

    Generic?

Dude there are like, those three games and that's it, that are trying to be more sandboxy than current games. Just because it is a sandbox doesn't mean that it is trying to recreate Ultima Online. I'm pretty sure that neither Ryzom or Darkfall tried to do so, MO I know nothing of.

I didn't know fantasy games that have sandbox elements are all trying recreate UO... all three of them. (And all are completely different from eachother)

  • Well, I liked the concept, particularly the sandbox with large world with player housing and pvp control of resources.  However, I can't stand full loot pvp (why would you make a mmo that caters to such a niche market and drives everyone else out?), I can't stand harvesting resources "by hand" (much more prefer SWG's harvestor system), and there is no information whatsoever on the company.  I couldn't even begin to guess if they're legit.  No way I'm signing up for a beta by putting in all my personal information for a company that won't tell you anything about themselves and has only an e-mail address for contact.  Great ideas, shoddy execution imo.

Funny how I'm looking for a sandbox game and every one I've checked out recently (mortal online, dawntide, darkfall) are ALL full loot pvp.  Amazing how these indie devs just completely ignore the market.  Most players do NOT like full loot pvp.  Get it through your thick skulls devs.

I hope there's no legal action against them by sony if they get popular but yeh im kinda amazed they don't keep this fact a secret, any one have an idea why?

Care to elaborate for those of us who aren't in the know and have never heard of Winter's Roar?

It was a private server for EQ a few years ago, the devs were like hardcore players back then.

Heh..so the devs of this game used to play and run an EQ1 private server? Thats pretty interesting. Did Sony shut it down?

If it WAS a private server, SOE can't take legal action. it was never theirs to begin with. Not to mention, Dawntide is completely its own game as of yet.

Yes they can take legal action because SOE owns the game and private servers are created off of (sometimes) illegally obtained codes that SOE produced.  There are some games that release these codes and allow players to host private servers as long as they, and everyone else playing on the server, have an active account for the game.

Quoted from http://everquest-eq2.tault.com/everquest_2_privateservers.html  "Keep in mind private servers are highly illegal and owning one / creating one could get you in serious financial civil suites or maybe even criminal cases against you. "

What games have had their code released and allowed private servers? I cant think of any.

I agree about the 2nd thing your sick of. Not the first one, for starters Aion isn't even click to more.

It actually is. For the locialization they made keyboard movements default. It actually has decent WASD movement compared to half assed attemps like L2.

Aion was designed as a WASD movement game right from the beginning, you can easily tell by looking at the very early gameplay video.

Aion isn't your typical asian grindfest, it's designed after western mmorpgs, not eastern.

Its a grindfest with WASD movements with a western game engine. Thats pretty much the only thing that sets it apart from the rest.

It took the first players about 2 weeks to reach the cap level. if Aion is a grindfest, so is every other mmorpg ever.

But this thread isn't about Aion, it's about yet another indie mmorpg project that is going nowhere.

You opened this can of worms buddy. The person or persons who hit the level cap in 2 or so weeks obviously were playing for the sole purpose on doing so, had a few buddies or a guild helping, and most likely played on the korean or chinese servers. With that said, pretty much every MMO has had this happen. WoW has had people reach max level after both expansions in a matter of hours. Doesn't make any game less of a grind because people know how to exploit the game mechanics. Aion becomes a terrible grind around lv 30-35. As in killing the same mobs over and over for hours just to level, without doing any quests.

Quest grinds are no better than grinding mobs.

    A grind is a grind.

It's either fun leveling or it isn't.

If it's to long, and not fun, putting in some quests makes it worse, IMO. Not only do I have to kill the mobs, I have to go scroll through a bunch of worthless quest dialog.

(I dont know how to quote)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultima_Online_shard_emulation

    History

"Shard emulation for Ultima Online got its start during the beta-stage of the game's development in 1996 and 1997, when a program called Ultima Offline eXperiment was released that allowed the players to setup offline servers the game client could connect to. The source-code for version three of this program was released under the GNU General Public License sometime in 1998, which spawned a host of forks, clones and complete reimplementations.

From the time the first shard emulator software appeared and until late 2005, more than 40 shard emulation projects for Ultima Online came into existence, though in 2008 only a handful of those were still active."

EA knows these private servers are running and leave them alone. I had heard that they believed these private servers were good for the game because it created interest. This might be a line of crap I was fed or it might be true but a lie the company said to avoid a legal fight over an older game.
