So im looking for games that are totally unique in one way or another, been playing a good amount of junk lately and wanna have something refreshing besides EVE. I really don't care if its free or p2p, if its grindy or if it isnt, if its fantasy or not...ANYTHING goes. So here's a list of some games i think are unique and reasons why...
fallen earth: apocalypse setting, fps combat, alot of nice gear
champions/coh: maybe the same old type of game, its alot more fun just for the fact that it's superheroes
ryzom: great pve content, unique races, good skill training system, good crafting, unique dynamic world
darkfall: twitch based, ffa pvp, sandbox
planetside: an actual massive fps, unique gameplay
atlantica: loved the combat system, great lore and story, very nicely flowing
Here's a list of unique games i've already tried: EVE, guild wars, FFXl, spellborn, granado espada (i did kind of, really left since i heard the game had no content), DDO, vendetta online, dungeon runners, POTBS (didnt really play but waiting on expansion before i do), maplestory, dofus, aoc, voyage century, mabinogi, ATID4, wurm, DOMO ( only heard it was good, but was put off bad by anime graphics but if you can convince me i may try again), dragonica, megaten, crimecraft, runes of magic.
--That sounds good to me but im sorry if i missed anything.
So yeh that's just a little list to give you an idea of what i think unique is, i've probably played a good bunch of the other games you might suggest but right now i really can't remember all of them. So yeh what's the most refreshing/unique game you've ever played?
Comments
Give The Chronicles of Spellborn a try.
-FPS/Twitch styled combat. Have to aim your attacks and many skills have negative affects if you miss. The only way you miss is if you actually miss. No passive misses/blocks/evades/etc.
-Unique rotating action bar called a Skilldeck. Limits amount of skills you can have currently equipped like Guild Wars, but allows for many more.
-Combat states control the flow of battle. There are 3 Morale=Damage, Physique=Move Speed, Concentation=Skilldeck Rotation Speed and Attack Speed. There are many skills that buff yours and debuff your targets and ways to take advantage if your state is higher than your opponents.
-Gear is just for looks. Can be a mage in plate if you want. There are sockets you can put sigils in to customize your stats somewhat.
-5 Faction PvP. A middleground between the typical 2 faction games and the FFA games.
Hey thanks for the detailed reply but i used to play spellborn when it was released, left for obvious reasons and now im aware that the game is free but im rather waiting for the re-release to come and see whats changed. To save further waste of people's time i think it would be better if i just add a list of games i've played in that sense.
Wizard 101 is very original. It is little childish though but I think you should give it a try..
ye was thinking about that too, right now i have luminary and wizards on my list but might check out allods kinda was waiting for release though.
Allods is fine but nowhere near unique.
Face of Mankind is totally unique. Just look at it. You'll see. Plus, the roleplaying aspect makes the military and police branches pretty interesting.
I just fear for the game. Even CB is attracting some a**holes.
Another TOTALLY, COMPLETELY OUT THERE UNIQUE sorta game is A Tale In the Desert. It's just not everyone's cup of tea.
Also Vendetta...
EDIT: Luminary takes a lot of patience and I wouldn't play the IJJI release. Average American gamer + F2P + real in-game economy = bad. I'd try the Aeria release if you try at all. But I wouldn't try.
EDIT2: LOVE is pretty unique, but being in Alpha, it lacks a lot of content.

Yeh face of mankind had the worst community i ever saw, plus i guess i cant say much because of the NDA.
ATID4, tried getting into but like you said just wasnt my type of thing.
Vendetta i played the trial, the controls were way too ackward for my taste plus low population killed it for me.
Hmm whats wrong with luminary? i was actually just checking out aeria's website and seems like there's only a few active people there so i might have to go with ijji unless it has the same problem too.
Yeh im looking forward to love and was gonna pay for alpha but it seems like there is a total lack of content so ill just wait till release.
Early on, not that unique, but the Ship to Ship PvP sounds different when that gets put in.
If Asheron's Call 2 ever gets rereleased, that game had fun unique classes. I know it probably wont ever live again, but with DDO doing really well on the F2P model, maybe Turbine will give AC2 a shot on that model as well.
The dual class system in RoM is unique.
Runescape, the grandfather of the modern mmorpg, has unique skill based quest system anchored by minigames.
Other than those, most mmorpg are not really unique IMO. They are all wow-like, game boy like scrollers (maple, dragonica) or turn based like remake of 10 year old dinosaurs dubbed 'unique' like dofus and atlantica.
yeh runescape was my very first MMO, and must agree in all my gaming experience nothing has come close to what that game offered. Really looking forward to jagex's new game coming next year!
As for runes of magic, im about to play it. Got rom and wizard101 downloaded so i'll be giving them a whirl.
Mechscape?! They cancelled it I think.
Mechscape?! They cancelled it I think.
Mechscape was cancelled. However, Jagex is in the process of making another game "Stellar Dawn" using their work from mechscape.
They hope to release it next year but I think more like 2011.
Bumpage, tried 3-4 different games and gotta say there were quite refreshing and well done but were more in the casual area. As of right now im looking at starting runes of magic tomrw and keep going with EVE, for some damn weird reason i don't feel like playing eve though...I was quite excited thinking about when ill give EVE another shot but after the combat tutorial i just don't feel like loggin on anymore, my best guess right now would be the fact that combat was boring but ye kinda weird not wanting to play a game i know would probably fit my perfect mmo criteria. On that note, if your a eve player...does combat become more action or fast paced later or is it kind of the same lock-approach-orbit-pew pew?
--Haha long story short, keep the suggestion coming!
Gabby, any EvE player would try to defend it, but its combat stays the same mind-numbing orbit pew-pew with the only change being more modules being added to your HUD management and making sure you don't die by clicking them over and over and making sure you don't run out of energy.
In other words, it gets about as intense as a puzzle game. You'll spend more time watching your modules' timers tick than the you will the actual action, and for all the sci-fi intensity going on on-screen, you still have to sit through knowing that you're hardly doing anymore than you would in a squad-based RTS. I'm not insulting EvE, and not trying to slander but state my realistic opinion that watching numbers tick down in combat in MUDs made me sweat more than combat in EvE.
It's the only thing that turned me off to the game. That and, as I've said before, during mining and travel, I took time to do mundane RL things because there was no point in sitting there. I actually took a shower during my first major traveling experience.
Despite the obvious difference in focus, I'd still choose VO over EvE.

Ah i see, one of the major points that keep me playing games is the combat system plus on average you are most likely gonna spend 80%+ of your time doing combat so this might be a big turn off. What saddens me the most is the fact that eve was like my last resort mmo as in if all else fails well we got eve left but all this afk stuff sucks, i mean having to travel for 10 minutes or mining is really boring plus most combat missions seem to be kinda the same thing, accept mission-go to location-pew pew- loot-go back. I'll atleast finish the tutorial before i make a decision, because well i believe there's alot of other things one can do...well atleast i hope i actually get the urge to complete those.
No, honestly, get into a corporation before you decide. It shouldn't be too hard. Just spend a day or two in there and if the experience doesn't improve, then don't play.
EvE should by no means be a last resort though. it's a niche game. You either love it or are bored sh*tless by it.

Which reminds me i should get the info of eve university from there site, and why i had it as a last resort was more in terms of its the only different game and its a sandbox so i was pretty confident it would be a good game.
It's not the only one.
A Tale in the Desert (I subbed) and LOVE (I subbed for a month and am waiting a while now) are both MMOs, are both different, and are both sandbox.

This game is more of a bunch of ever present singleplayer games but you should try dungeon assault. Its a classic dungeon crawl style game but you get to make your dungeon then go raid other peoples dungeons to put more stuff in your dungeon or buy better raiders. Its free and made by funorb a jagex company. Its lots of fun, i play it when waiting for new MMOs to come out.
Earth Eternal is "unique" in the races it is offering. Quite a big selection of furries to choose, no humans/dwarves/elves whatsoever. I wouldn't recommend it as a game though, just for a laugh at the avatars xD
1 + 1 = 2... Unless it CRITS!
It plays like the cheap version of WoW that tries to make you feel like the epic animal hero by making everything at least 2-3 times your size. xD

Will checkout the dungeon game and i've already been following earth eternal for awhile and its not really my type of game.
@john, yeh i know about those games i was giving more of a generic term haha. love as for now too early in development and ATID i did do some research on it earlier like 2 months ago and decided it wasnt for me i think mainly because of the population and the game in all not being too action packed...But if i get some time over the weekend i definitely will check it out again.
Yeah, Gabby, I'd play the game to get a good idea of it rather than just research it. Seeing as I actually was inclined to subscribe, that should say to anyone that it's at least worth a look. It's a shame it's an obscured indie MMO. It's probably due to the fact that there's no violence.
Anyways, there's a game in Closed Beta that's coming from Europe called Craft of Gods that's coming out. It's pretty unique. You should check it out too. =]
Check out the MUD I'm making!
Craft of gods seems to already have closed beta applications, weird thing is its a p2p game which i dont think anyone has heard of around here haha.
I also checked out ATID4 yesterday, the graphics were...well i can live with them but i seriously saw no options to tweak them besides the 2-3 they don't even have resolution options and the camera and controls were very painful. I left after about 30 mins because the camera was annoying me alot lol but ill try to check it out again today. Also i was wondering what exactly is the gameplay like? since there's no combat do you just collect things and craft or what.
