How is Darkfall?

McAvoyMcAvoy Member Posts: 85

I want to buy Darkfall but i keep hearing good and bad things about it so i would like to know what you players think about it before i spend 50$ that could go towards rebuying a few old XBOX games for the PC.

Asking in the DFO specific forums is going to get ridiculously biased answers(ofcourse, asking anywhere else will too.)

I'd suggest not picking up the game because the community resembles that of xbox live.

Most of the Darkfall community is very critical of the game and give very VERY in depth analysis to anyone who asks. This is different from most games I've played. Asking on the MMORPG forums on the other hand, you'll get mostly massive trolls (this is kind of their de facto meeting place) or the hardened fanboys, with some in between.

Oh as a Shadowbane player, very very likely. I'll let a player with more clan warfare and siege experience fill you in

I have been on the edge about the game as well.  If there was a free trial I would have tried it by now.

I don't really like the DL only option either.

Anyway, you are going to hear a lot of different opinion from crap the the best game ever and it all depend on what type of game you like.  In either case,  you aren't going to get a feel for this game without trying it from what I have read and you will more then likely either love it or hate it.

It seems like there a lot of people on both sides of the fence and that they are both catapulting shit at each.

So, to be honest I it looks like a risk of your $50 that you will either love or hate.

    Feel like a gamble?

    Edit:

If you liked shadowbane I think there is a good chance you would like it.

DFO is not a bad game, played it in beta, subbed after beta, went back again. It just is not my cup of tea, I am just not into full loot.

But the game is worth it if you are into that kind of thing.

DL only,  hmmm - I will have to wait till the 3rd when my check gets into my account then.  I have the cash to buy but my credit card is a little crowded.  I guess I will think about it.  I have a decent machine - how is lag during seiges, etc?

The best suggestion I could give is watch some newer Youtube videos of gameplay.

As a Shadowbane player, obviously graphics are not top priority to you, so that won't be a problem. As a current subscriber I have to say I thoroughly enjoy playing. I don't feel the need to play for hours upon hours, I log in kill some goblins, get my loot bank it before I die and can log off knowing I made some money and upped some stats.

It sucks that there isn't a trial for the game, but there are alot of other things in life you cannot "test" before you get it. If you want PvP and lots of additional content being added throughout the year, go for it.

With a decent machine you might have to turn off shadows and turn down blood effects in a HUGE siege to obtain good results probably.

I like everything mostly. The main MMO's I've played are FFXI, WoW, WAR, PSU, and Aion.  Massive battles are the main thing i love in MMO's tho.

This You Tube video sums up my love of strategy and War

and boats! I've seen a few ship battles on you tube and that's mostly what has me interested so far, and i really don't mind the Morrowind graphics.

I am one of the few that liked the game from the first day I played and still like the game more than 6 months later.

My first second impression with the game was “wow this is an online version of Morrowind with RTS features thrown in, nicely done.” I still feel the same way.

Granted anything you really like you will be called a fanboi so.... just like I am a fanboi of sex, I am a fanboi of DF

Also, are there any gold sellers or RMT in Darkfall? I would really enjoy finding and killing them.

I have played since launch and I have never ever seen gold sellers or RMT in any race alliance, or on the boards.

No gold farmers or sellers, think someone got there before you and ganked them into the stone age!

Seems like this game is peaking the interest of alot of people now. Good PR improvements since the release.

I probably won't play this game until they include all the features they had promised so long ago. And fix the problem with the grind (no skill decay/cap = 100% all skills to compete). I will keep my eyes peeled for the next expansion after "Conquer the Seas".

The game could (and already is for some) a safe haven to those who are not into or simply tired of themepark MMOs. Try it if you are in to sandbox games with full loot.

Like any indy compony ,Adventurine had its ups and down with the launch of Darkfall. But months later players are seeing a new side of Adventurine and its been great change, hopefully this patch and the others to come will comtinue to make this game great.

If you like full loot PvP thats on a personal skill system then give DF a try.

    No. This isn't accurate.

You can be totally viable in group/siege warfare in a comparatively little amount of time. Xipher has posted a decent write up of how to do this on this forum.

They have chosen a rock/paper/scissors model rather than a skill cap. It is being introduced in the expansion this weekend. So, you can be melee, archery or magic focused at the expense of the other skills. BUT you can switch, with a cooldown, if your style changes or you'd simply like to try something else.

90% of any grind was pretty much removed in September when they upped skill gains by up to 600% in some areas.

@OP: It's on the up. I won't say anymore because I've been converted into a total fanboy since coming back in September :) Just the best game on the market if you're unsatisfied with other MMOs and the way MMOs have been heading in the last 5 years or so.

You do not need all skills to compete, not even close. This isn't WoW where you need a maxed out character. This is a skill based game. Hell, you don't even need proper gear.

And what features are missing that they "promised"?

The number one given in a PvP use based system of skill gain is that the longer a player base exists, the more the new player will need to have all skills maxed, to even achieve base line competence.

Why do you think this player type (including the developers) love this system?

Because sheep can never catch up to the wolves.

I assume you will say all the macroing (even if it has been curbed now) was simply people who love using nifty programs. Not, that there was an arms (skill) race, or that the end result of this arms (skill) race, is a huge valley between new and old.

It was pure gadget love. Nothing nefarious.
