To OP: Just play Anarchy Online, FFXI, Ryzom, or any MMo that came out before WoW really. Before WoW came out devs still knew how to make proper MMos that aren't solo/rush to max level/easy/etc.

Giving up on mmos is the sensible thing to do nowadays. And you will save some money and a lot of time.

I am hoping at some point we will see a game like EQ1 or DAoC, but I don't see anything on the horizon that even comes close.

I heard people in the game call Aion, daoc 2. meh.

Ncsoft is still showing much love to the game.

Good advice. These days MMOs are just instant gratification, mental masturbation simulators, that cost you money for no real return on value. Quit them for now. Find something useful to do with your spare time, and force these companies to actually strive to create something of value if they want to stay in business. And don't get me wrong, I'm all for the importance of leisure time, I just don't see how the popular MMOs these days are any funner than say doing the same repetitive and arduous task at a dead end job on a factory assembly line. Actually I can see one way, in a factory at least your are being PAID for your time.

Probably because while he is disgusted with current MMOs  right now, he hopes they will eventually go back to being something fun to do.

I also assume he came here to a game board to put forth an idea and have other people respond with their ideas, reflect on those other individual's ideas, and see how they merge and/or differ with his own ideas. Its called having an intelligent discussion. You should try it some time.

What changed? Many games might've failed to please many fans but Aion sure hasn't. The servers are packed. Its done what it was expected to do, and it does a good job doing it.

and that's perhaps your opinion along with all the other fanboys here, I personally find Aion worse than many things in the market these days. Please use the wording that suggests it's an opinion and not a fact.

I'm sorry to say but it's simple as that. I hope you find a game that you like but it's extremely rare to find your dream. That game for me is Oblivion: TES and I'm still playing it and loving it.
    Best of luck to you.

LOL was this for me? If so why even bother to post that. I wasn't asking someone to develope my perfect game. I was asking what games might be in developement I might like. Also, i would probably represent a large enough minority that we are financially significant.  So, your brilliant piece of advice in point 1, that's what I am doing now smart guy. The stupidity of your statement in point 1 is only outdone by the stupidity of point 2.

Basically, your post wasn't relevant to anything I asked, not did I complain about anything, so what was your point? That you're an internet tough guy, or one of those annoying preachy personality people? Seriously, piss off...................

    Best of luck to you.

There was nothing offesive about his statement, "tough guy".

You are easily offended. Really, his post, was kinda logical.

Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.

Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside

Take a break from MMOs and pick up a single player game for a few weeks... It clears the head and gives you a chance to really think about what you want from games today.

Personally playing a few single players (Dragon ages, L4D2, Machinarium - head spinner xD and currently Saboteur - which is kinda... lackluster) and enjoying a fast-paced games with an ENDING, you can enjoy the feeling of accomplishment out of the usual grind and gear pressure.

Good luck in the future though.

i gave up MMOs 2 months ago. realized its not really worth it after what its cost me in RL. plus theres really nothing out there worth my time anymore. seems like companies just throw a pile of crap together thats just barely good enough to be considered a "finished" product and expect people to pay for it. i think id rather take my 50 bucks plus the 15 for the subscription and go get hammered at the bar and puke on myself.

  • neonwireneonwire Member Posts: 1,787

You're pretty close to giving up on mmos? Well why not take that final step? Go on! Do it! I guarantee you will feel better for it. Once you have gone back to single player games you will wonder why the hell you spent so much time and money on the crap that passes for mmos these days. Most of them are just dull single player questing games dumped on a server with the "option" to team up with random idiots......most of which you cant actually group with because they're either a different level to you or are at a different stage in the single player storyline.

Who knows maybe someone will make a real mmo some time. There seem to be a few in development which might actually use the internet properly for a change and recognise that online games should be focused on player interaction rather than just telling us stories and having us fight against the computer. Then again they might be rubbish. Who knows.

So yeah start playing single player games again. Thats where the quality is.

    Thankyou. That made me chuckle.

Asheron's Call was also my first MMO experience (1999-2001).  Nothing since has captivated me.  I've tried many MMOs over the years but never for long, thus I consider 2001 to be the time I "quit" MMOs.  EVE Online has piqued my interest repeatedly, but I just haven't been able to find much fun in the game.  I'm primarily an explorer in games and there isn't much to explore in EVE.  Its also devoid of interesting flora and fauna.  I know, not usually a marketing point for games.  I'm weird like that.

I'm curious to see what Zenimax Online is up to.  I am hoping that, being a sister company to Bethesda Softworks, they will inherit some of that open ended world exploration vibe.

In all honesty I can no longer enjoy Asheron's Call as much as I did back then.  Too much grinding/killing in order to increase your numbers on your stats.  I guess I've changed.  Or the euphoria of something new wore off.  Or both.

Not really.  Compare CoD MW to CoD MW 2, an obvious downward trend in quality.  Oblivion to Morrowind, again and downtrend using improved GFX to cover less content.  Most single players games anymore feel...hmm.....easy.  I think the last really awesome single player experience I had (outside of Rockband/GH type stuff) was Dead Rising.  None of the FPS games rocked me, and most RPG's these days are rehashed ideas of better quality games.

Playing the old school games is good though.  Alpha Centauri STILL ROCKS.  Torchlight was pretty good too, nothing new or amazing but a really good "copy" of Diablo.  Much improved mechanics.

To be honest I didn't read your whiney op hence why my post wasn't revelant to your whine, I'm just here to piss you off.. oh and you won't win a forum battle with me , many have tried, all have lost.

How is that possible? You seem totally unable to grasp simple concepts. Like asking a question and whining are two different things. There was no complaint in what I posted. It was an honest question. And lol@your internet battle record, have you ever seen a woman naked?

No, no it wasn't. I asked a question. He launched into a self-righteous diatribe regarding how the mmo industry doesn't have to cater to me. If you read my OP, it had nothing to do with that. The gist of my original post, since you and the "battler" don't seem to get it is simply thus; are there any new games in developement I might not have heard of that I might be interested in. He is what is typically known as a troll.

No. He is not a troll. He had a very clear point, as did you at OP when you stated that single player rpgs might be more fun for you. My guess is at this point, you would be much happier playing a single player game. In OP, you stated you don't like anything other than high fantasy, fine. If you cannot find your game in mmo space with that requirement, you are completely screwed, and Dragon Age, Never Winter Nights 2, or Oblivion, sounds *right* up your alley. So play them, or keep dropping US50 on something you hate. I don't care. His point, let me reinforce:

"1. Find a game the best suits you. It's not going to be perfect but if you enjoy it then thats good."

    "2. Stop gaming."

By #2,  I think he meant stop trying to find a MMO, since it obviously does not suit you play style. By #1, he meant be happy FFS.

If you think his statement was a "self-righteous diatribe," you are nothing more than a weak minded human being. He even went as far as to say he wasn't playing a mmo.

    Just sayin.

Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.

Your language skills are suspect if you think that wasn't a jab at me in a thread that clearly didn't call for one. It was a question. I was looking for information. I should have understood what I was dealing with when he elaborated on his forum "battle record" anyways, I am done with this thread. Some people actually answered my question.

Yep. KingGator, I understand  your situation and if I were you i would go away from MMO's as they are today, but still keep an eye on possible future releases that come from non-narrow-minded game developers that have the dedication to create more engaging games that those we have today.
I play from time to time on a private WoW server just to advance a bit one alternate char i have or log with my main char to do some dungeon with the guild mates or help them / chat with them. It doesn't cost me anything monthly ( but I paid for the game boxes ) and I have some fun with it from time to time. I just don't play it everyday and I'm fine.

Other than that, I will play Allods Online in the future, it is also free to play and offers exactly the same as other so-called "AAA" MMO's which cost a monthly sub. And also I will try Torchlight MMO or Mythos in the future.

Yes, I have said it earlier in the forums, they are dumbed-down versions of single-player ARPG's.

About the random idiots....not everyone is like that, there is good and bad people just the same as in real life. Let's not put everyone on the same box. ;)
