I don't need to know a definite especially because this is in development, and I would like this to be developed. At least as fully as they can get it before they let thousands of actual players in and see how the game environment works with a large number of players. So can someone ask Bioware what half of what year this may be released?

Well we can only speculate theirs a novel being released in july which may or may not contain spoilers in the TOR story if it does it will be released with the game. Beta is expected to start febuary but if the novel has nothing to do with the storyline then following mmo tradition it will be september-november 2010

Oh also on the voice thing for players, we have decent speech recognition now, I am sure most pc's could handle it decently. So why do they not add a simulation client, then take voice samples from you, and have the voice rendered as yours? This would seem to be rather simple to implement, and would add a very distinct quality to the game. I know the voice simulation would not be exact, but it would be somewhat like your own (at least in a recognition spectrum). It would also add some personification for each and every player as well.

Because everyday a new player makes a character...or updates their character's voice we'll have to download a billion patches...unless its only going to be client side then whast the point?  I'd rather they not try to do something so outrageously new in games that is NOT proven to work in games as part of the client just as part of a seperate voice chat.

Not to mention someone out there is bound to have some sound driver issue at some point and that just further adds on the techincal support crap with compatibility.   Its not as simple as you make it sound you don't just plug in that feature you have to BUILD that feature from scratch or pay a company to build one.  Then you have to waste developers time to figure out how to use that feature and make it workable for the user and then writ eall the directions.  Alot of trouble for a minimal effect.

I can only imagine the insane extra amount of processing power and even server side lag by the constant live rendering of a personal voice verification software running.     For every Additional Fancy Feature a company adds thats MORE Processing and network load that is needed.

I'd rather shoot myself in the foot then hear some asshats messed up twisted sounding voice or my own in a game.

Voice synth isn't that good atm, but they might be able to get some system setup so that you can tweak your character's voice a bit.  Multiple voice actors and then having some sliders for things like pitch and whatnot would go a long way towards customizing the voice and is quite doable.

sounds like mass effect online. pass. i play games for action and grouping with real people...not to read a visual novel.

  • zaylinzaylin Member UncommonPosts: 794

I hear ya I like my action and grouping too, but at the same time MMOs at least are getting boring and stagnet with out a good story to follow, thats the whole point of emerssion, you mite as well take out the RPG part of all mmos for the most part. 3 of the main factors in an RPG (imo) are Questing/storyline, Leveling/advancing, finding new characters (single player)/grouping.

If you read what they've said and seen the videos, you'd see it is probably more like a multi-player version of mass effect where you even have a group dialogue system so everyone gets to add to the conversation.

Heck, they've even said that the "solo" content can be done with friends, so if you don't want to do stuff by yourself you certainly don't have to.

mass effect was a boring visual novel not a game. people dont want to group just to read a book. i also expect the actual non-reading rainbow content to be very linear and on the rails. just like mass defect and dragon age.

Ever go to a killer movie with some buddies, go to the video store with some friends to get a movie you all wana watch, Go grab some snacks and drinks before ya head over to your friends to watch the movie? I honestly dont think that adding a bit of story will ruin it or make it boring.  I say give it a chance.

Sounds like its going to have something for everone and every play style ,I like to solo im not big on groups and hate the idea of haveing to look for a group and then if 2 or more of the same classes are grouped  up haveing to roll on the loot I for one am happy when I watched the video and the dev said you could infact solo the whole game ,but again thats me and thats what I like so thoses who like group awsome but just remeber all its a game for everyone not just you! I loved SWG back  in the day when it first came out and yea I am going to play and yes there are part of the game I dont like but i would never push thoses ideas on others nor would i demand this or that just everyone cross there fingers Im sure its going to be a good game its STAR WARS for goodness sake !

So I get the MMORPG newsletter in my eamil this morning and the featured "Game of The Week" title appears....

It reads "Startrek Online." Only the article is about Starwars Online. Woops!

    LOL

It isn't Star Wars. It's KOTOR.

Star Wars is the movies. It's Obi-wan, and Luke, and Leiea, and Han and Chewbacca. It's space battles. It's Lightsabres and Blasters killing with one hit - not a dozen. This isn't Star Wars.

8 pages of responses and I'm thinking 'nobody else noticed that the title (logo) in the newsletter of this article reads "Star Trek Online" while the article itself is about SWtoR?'. Then, I get to the very end of the replies and finally! Looks like you stole my thunder Babs.

Now I'm off to actually read the article...

If it annoys you in Dragon Age, I'd imagine it will annoy you in Star Wars. From the very small chunk I played, it seemed about the same, with the only difference being you got to watch your guy talk too.

Sweet mother of god, say it aint so.

To be fair, we only played one area. So that is pretty anecdotal.

Although, I completely agree with what you said in the article Dana! I don't mind sitting through numerous cut scenes, but I would prefer they didn't voice act for the character I'm playing.

I don't want to be Harrision Ford's character or Mark Hamil's. Those roles have already been done. I want to make up my own, and choose what that person did (which as described above did not fall into any of the "iconic" classes). That's why I loved SWG pre-nge. Koster gave me the ability to really tell my SW story.

    Indeed.

...the animations are as good as any game out there (single-player and MMO)...

This must be the silliest thing i ever read about SW:TOR

There is a pretty large community on official SW:TOR forums that are not happy with the way characters are animated,at least the moving animations like running, strafing and jumping, they look waaaaay to clunky and character has no shoulder movement whatsoever with their weapons drawn, they look like they swallowed a broom and like they keep running on a treadmill with their feet never touching the ground

Anyone who watched that 20 min developer walkthrough  could see how retarded that bounty hunter and smuggler looked while they ran around with their weapons drawn(note the smugglers left hand)Combat animations are much better tho, even if not perfect

Now i know what are some people gonna say, this is early alpha/beta wtfever...Well i've been in alot of MMO betas ever since SWG(quite some time ago)and i've never once seen character running animations improve much from beta->release

So seeing a reviewer write something like that quoted text is pretty discouraging, cause Bioware should be pointed out to obvious fail in the way characters are moving

Anyone that is not sure what I am talking about watch:

and note when smuggler starts running and strafing with weapon drawn

Anyway I'm making a plea to the reviewers here if u ever have the chance point out these animation flaws

I do not wish this MMO to end up with horrible animations like LOTRO for example,a game excelling in every other aspect.

I still couldn't bear to watch that clunky running and stiff shoulders or the "treadmill run" so i quit the game after few weeks(despite awesome lore, graphics and story)

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment
