I usually play female characters because they usually look better and seem that they got more time put into them by developers. Male characters often look too generic. Tons of muscles, which totally fit a mage, minus the sarcasm, and have a face that looks like it wants to eat babies.
Female characters usually have more variety. And they dont end up looking like they are wearing a trash can or a shower curtain as armour.
So I know a lot of female avatars in mmo's are actually being played by guys and I must admit, I play females sometimes too. Some people say that it's strange, but here's my justification: if I have to stare at an ass shaking in front of me for hours, it might as well be a nice ass. How many of you guys play as females from time to time? And do any of you ladies play as males?
WOW! Now there's a refreshingly new post that we've never seen before!

Some of us are just more tightly tied to our gender than others.
I know women who could never play a man and I am a man who could never play a woman.
It doesn't mean that you won't go on to marry and have children if you play females. It just means you're a bit fem. You might even be more willing to help out with the mommy chores.
If you check pubmed, you will find a few scientific studies have indicated that straight males who play female avatars in online environments have a tendency towards latent homosexuality. In fact the results were very similar to studies about straight males who like Coldplay. However, the early results from some follow on studies are now finding that many of male subjects roll their females toons when listening to Coldplay. It's not yet clear if this is causation or correlation.
Sorry, but that is bollocks. First, as a gay man, why should I want to play or see a female toon? I never made a single female toon, and in the MANY gay friendly guilds, 95% of gay players made MALE toons. When a man makes a female toon, he obviously does it because he like to see females. It is totally absurd to conclude a man who plays a female toon is latent homosexual.
There are two different things: your social genderization and your sexual preferrence. Those two have ZERO to do with each other. There are manly gays and effeminate straights. Those two things are not correlated at all. And what the heck has listening to coldplay to do with it?
Absurd.

it's a game. You don't need to justify anything to anyone, you just need to have fun playing the game. If you want to play as a female and if for any reason in the whole world you find that fun, go for it.
Same goes for playing a toon that looks like a cute child, but personally I think that's just wrong, and they should be banned from games that adults play. Do I want to group with these? No I do not.
In my opinion is someone who says man should only play man is following a logic that leads to human can only play human and not undead, orcs, dwarfs, taurocs etc. as this is far more strange then to play a human.
I play the class and race and gender i want to play bcs of the skills, the look, playstyle, the fun it gives me and nothing else. I would have liked to play an Arachnid from Spindelhalla in DAOC and that does not mean i am Spiderman but i thought it would be fun to do so.
Sometimes females fit better an archetype like in AoC when i play my caster i never can imagine one of this steroid guys you can generate will look like a caster...while a Bearshaman is strongly a male option...
To stay in AoC the animations are far better for females then man and the diversity of looks is much greater.
So there are many reasons to play anything you want and i think the poeple that play mmos to get sexual amusement are playing "Second Life".
So the question is not if one plays a male or female but does one play "Second Life"
"Torquemada... do not implore him for compassion. Torquemada... do not beg him for forgiveness. Torquemada... do not ask him for mercy. Let's face it, you can't Torquemada anything!"
sooo you guys dont seem to understand why this topic seems to come up ALOT. See, personally when I make a toon in an mmo its basically ME in that virtual world, i guess you can call it immersion. So its kinda like how i would look like, be, do, in that world but you also interact with real people in the game. Thats the biggest difference with single-player games and mmos. I dont mind playing as lara croft, zoey or that crazy chick in heavenly sword but if in an mmo i have to create my own personal character i would like to be a guy.
really i dont care if you wanna play a girl and ive seen some pretty good reason but dont say that lame excuse "i wanna stare at her ass." Thats actually the most loser excuse ive ever read...
You have hundreds of thousands of people playing as elves, dwarves, gnomes, undead, orcs, cows, wolves, dogs, cats, trolls... and you kids wonder why people might play a FEMALE?!?!?!11oneii
Here's a bit of advice. It's a game. It's not real. If you're hung up on people playing the opposite gender, then I advise you to stop trying to get a piece of ass in a video game. Put the tissues away, and keep both of your hands above the desk, right hand on mouse, left on keyboard. Treat everyone in a game as a person, not a male, or a female. If you treat a female differently then you need to let your balls drop a little more before playing a MMORPG.

I have some character ideas that I simply can't do justice to unless I play a girl. Of course, my MMO of choice is City of Heroes, so my characters might be different from yours, but..
And I like playing girls - it's fun to see how much people will treat you differently with a pair of chesticles.
If i play game, where 100% of time i spend with butt of my char right in front of me i rather like it to be female butt. Simple as that

My favorite fantasy mage is a male, Raistlan Majere, so that isnt it. Oh well someone, somewhere most likely has a government grant and will figure it all out soon.

I have to admit I kind of hate the "staring at an ass" excuse too. I play female characters for their looks, but I tend to rate beauty and cuteness over sexual attraction, especially when it comes to a sprite or a 3D model >_> I just like how the females in most games look a lot more, and the way all the outfits look on them. And in fact, if all the armor is blatantly "sexy" and slutty and my girl character can't look somewhat decent, I probably am not playing that game unless it just has fantastic and compelling gameplay. Most MMOs have not, in my experience.

I don't see what it matters. The people who roll characters of the opposite gender all have their own, and usually different reasons. It doesn't infer one thing or the other. Most MMOs we play are RPGs afterall, and the characters we play aren't meant to be direct projections of ourselves.
Though it does seem however, that the people that have the biggest problem with other people playing characters of the opposite gender, are the ones that are least secure in their own sexuality.

I'm secure in my manhood, so are the others. You just made my point without realizing it. If you're secure in your manhood, you're going to play a male character. If you're insecure then you'd still be seeking your true self, thus...rolling a female.

If you're secure in your masculinity then you don't have to reinforce it by playing a macho male character in an MMO. As a happily straight 31 year old, I could play a female character without feeling as though I was doing something unnatural or that I had to justify my choice to do so.
It helps to have a firm grasp of reality and recognise that MMOs are not real.
