Star Trek Online Producer Daniel Stahl let slip some disappointing information during a recent podcast interview with the folks at STOked, namely that Klingons would not have any genesis content, nor any episodic content, but most disappointing of all, Klingons will be PvP only.
This information surfaced on the Star Trek Online official forums in a thread started by user Crimson_Shadows, and has now been confirmed by Cryptic Studios' Jack Emmert in a stickied announcement.
Jack Emmert on Klingons in Star Trek Online:
Seems like good ole Dan kicked off Klingon month in STYLE!
First, let me apologize that info has been slow to get out. Believe it or not, December was supposed to "klingon" month. I have zero clue why it's Dec. 15th and still nothing, but I can tell you this WILL change (I just saw the threads yesterday).
Secondly, yes, Klingon gameplay is almost entirely PvP. We are trying to get some PvE in (there's already a tad bit). And, if the players demand it, we'll add more content (like episodes). I want us to be agile as a company and respond to what the customers want.
Third, I'll reiterate my point in the other thread. I'm most excited about playing a Klingon. I love combat in a bird of prey. Klingons are getting attention - from me. It's not as much as I'd want, but we have a foundation that we can grow into. If people like the federation gameplay, we can put that in for the Klingons. If players have a different set of requests for klingons, we can do that instead. We can make STO into the game that YOU want.
I'll close with that. MMORPG's aren't just about release. They're about community and the years of gameplay. Disappointed that there isn't more Klingon gameplay? Play STO, tell us what you'd like and we can deliver that. Every passing day, we can make STO into what the fans want.
So, there you have it. Klingon content could certainly broaden in scope post-launch, but for launch you can expect Klingons to be PvP only. Sorry guys.
On the plus side, we've got a number of new Klingon screenshots to tease you with! You can check them out in our Star Trek Online gallery.

It doesn't bother me. Let's play!
"Klingons are getting attention - from me. It's not as much as I'd want,"
Then push the game back until there is more content for one of the two factions in the game. You're not a by-stander - you're in charge of the game.
If Klingons are half-assed at release, it will hurt subs a LOT.

Hmm. On one hand, Star Trek was never really focused on Klingons as the main hero, but on the other hand if you are going to make them playable do it right.
Are they using the LORTO model for PvP? just have klingons be the monsters?
Rush rush to launch as many have said. Time is a wastin', Champ subs gonna fall off and we need STO Lifetime subs to roll in..

Please don't tell me this is todays Star Trek feature/article. I really liked Mondays about Character Creation, and Tuesdays about the Star Trek feel was an interesting read too. I spent yesterday refreshing the main page over and over again hoping something new would turn up (sad I know). Please let there be another article today. The one on klingon gameplay that was hinted at would be my first choice, but anything new would be great.
As for klingons being a "neglected" faction, obviously we can only speculate since we do not yet have the game available to test, but when I read this answer by a dev in the Pre-Order Q&A it didn't exactly inspire confidence.
Will Borg Bridge Officers be usable by the Klingons?
We hadn’t considered it until you asked…so we decided YES.
Now obviously I'm happy the answer was yes, but the fact that none of them had even considered that people might want to use one of the (IMO) most sought after pre-order bonuses on the klingon side is very worrying, at least to me.
While I think it might be an interesting idea if done right, I have my doubts considering this seems to be a fairly new decision. It just seems to scream "hey, we can't make this deadline with the klingons, so let's find some excuse to repackage them and move on!"
This makes me WANT to play STO now.
Keep in mind that you can still form fleets (guilds), trade, craft and do everything else that the Federation will be able to do, just minus the PvE portion. So no, it's not exactly monster-play.
This is a dumb idea what good is exploring and fighting etc. So since the romulans hardly appeared so are they just going to be watchers? and can never engage anyone. The only time I can remember when they had any actual battle at all occurred was in the orginal series. They just run aorund cloaked all the time never doing anything. If all races cannot do everything that is just dumb. The more I hear the more I get sad.
Klingons have always been about combat and as they're now at war with the Federation it seems reasonable to me have a combat based faction. However, it would be nice if they implemented PvE combat also as constant PvP in a MMO get boring.
Leave it to good ol Jack to open his mouth, shove his foot deep down his throat and screw up yet another cant miss IP. I am interested in what IP can Cryptic completely destroy next.
This is a news post, not a feature article, stay tuned!
I just wonder how character progression will work for them - How will I get new gear if there are no quest rewards? Will my "xp" gain be on par with a Fed since there are no missions? Or do they have missions, just all "go raid this ship" or "go kill this guy" that will give rewards?
it was mentioned on the forums that Klingons ONLY get xp in pvp...so yeah...
Really Klingons are a warrior race but not all war all the time, dones no one remember the Klingon Poet Sha'kas'sph're?
Thank you for your response. I look forward to reading the article.
I'm no fan of Cryptic, not by any means. Still, without actually having played the game (or Champions, because, well, I did play City of Heroes and found it to be terribly boring), I don't necessarily believe this to be fair.
Do I intend to play STO? No, not really. Not anymore. Because Cryptic is running it and that company really does have a bad reputation with me and because this (now confirmed) news about the Klingons being PvP only really leaves a sour taste in this major Star Trek fan's mouth.
But I do not think it fair to say that Cryptic has already completely destroyed the Star Trek IP...yet. I have friends playing the beta now and friends who intend to play the game when it launches. Perhaps I might have a look at it as they play, perhaps not. There is always time for Cryptic to step up and change my mind about both their company and this game.
Still, Cryptic (and others) would do well to keep in mind that it is not necessarily true that slapping a <insert IP name here> label on something guarantees box sales or subscription numbers. I may love Star Trek, but I abhor poorly made games, movies and programs (*cough* Enterprise *cough*), so no, just because it says "Star Trek" on it does not mean you are getting my money.

Maybe MMO is not your genre, go play Modern Warfare...or something you can be all twitchy...and rank up all night. This is seriously getting tired. -Ranyr
You know I don't really like this fact either, but it wasn't completely surprising. Klingons were mostly a warrior race, fighting for pvp only makes since for them. I was on the fence before about what to play when I get into the game, but I guess this article pushes me in the direction of playing federation. Not something I particularly like, but once again not totally unexpected.
Yea... here is your answer also. http://www.gamespot.com/news/6243795.html This really lends credence to a NWN MMO, that of course as Crpytic is the MMO company for Atari, Cryptic would be working on.

I'm glad this was confirmed before trying out this MMO as I was super excited when the announcement that ST was going to be an MMO. Unfortunately the 'monster play' in games like LoTRO are what make those titles absolute ****ing failures in my opinion. I know there are plenty of folks who love PvE and just sometimes PvP so this isn't much of a big deal. Sadly I'm not one of them and will be passing on STO. Too bad really, another story of what might have been in the world of MMORPG's.

Yes another monster play type theem, all we hear lin lotro is the creaps (monter players) and freeps scream how bad it is. If you design it this way up front its going to be an epic fail. I had already giving up on this game but now we can add -100 rept to cryptic, who at this point I don't think they could code their way out of a wet paper bag.
Do MMO developers never learn?
If the Klingons are not ready then do not release the game with them as a playable race. Save them for an expansion and complete the content for them.
Oh God, no. Not NWN. I can't stand the idea that Cryptic would be let anywhere near NWN.
"" Voice acting isn't an RPG element....it's just a production value." - grumpymel2
This sounds just like "Monster Play" in LOTRO, and that is, w/o, LOTRO's weakest link and why I no longer play the game. It's PvP-lite, half-hearted PvP. Ugh.
I see the future. In it, MMORPG.com in late 2010 will be discussing just how on earth Cryptic ruined the Star Trek IP.
While personally I have no interest to play Klingons, I bet it will create a BIG flamewar of angry (former) fans, and it will most certainly cause a huge dent in the popularity of STO. There are many people who feel real PVP based on two real, stand-alone factions is integral to a MMO. I say that as someone who personally does not like PVP much, but mark my words, that will drop the interest in STO for many! I have heard that often enough in Champions, why there was no Villains and Villain PVP like in CoH.
So essentially Klingons are Monsterplay. A bit of a letdown in this "great vision" that STO could have been. I feel a MMO should indeed have 2 or more factions. Even if you dont do PVP often, the mere existence of two factions in games like EQ2 or WOW sure spiced those games up a lot, even if you do PVP very seldom. Not to speak of replayability. Bad move, Cryptic, bad bad move, even if you yourself never planned to play Klingon. Such an antagonims is fuel for your doings.
It just confirms what I have said many times: making one MMO is daring, but making two MMOs almost at the same time is WAY too much for any company. So instead of one really well done we get two mediocre one. *sigh* Way not to go, Cryptic. I mean sure STO will have its followers, but looking at CO I see MASSIVE player loss the last weeks, and while no bad game, CO is just way too mediocre. After 2 months or 3 if you play slow you just have seen all, and I fear STO may be quite the same. Alas.
Well, at least its another filler until SWTOR comes, teh.
