Coldplay is similar to "The Stranger",..except you use ice to numb your hand instead.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
Confusion? I never gave it much thought as if the person behind the female avatar was male or female in most cases I called the person by their in-game name. Wouldn't the only real confusion come from wanting to safely cyber the opposite sex? Unless you are dead set on people playing exactly what they are in reality, in that case I say that's pretty pathetic.
I might not be a woman, but I play female characters. and so what? Im not a paladin in real life. does that mean I shouldnt play paladins? is the concept of role-play that hard to compute?
If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.
If you check pubmed, you will find a few scientific studies have indicated that straight males who play female avatars in online environments have a tendency towards latent homosexuality. In fact the results were very similar to studies about straight males who like Coldplay. However, the early results from some follow on studies are now finding that many of male subjects roll their females toons when listening to Coldplay. It's not yet clear if this is causation or correlation.
If you took mutombo's post seriously, you've been played.

Yes, gay men everywhere are flocking to MMORPGs and playing female toons so they can trick you into having cybersex with them, and that makes you gay! Now what?
Agreed. the only people interested in forcing people to only play their gender are pathetic losers that want to make sure they are trying to cyber a real girl. sad.

I don't see what it matters. The people who roll characters of the opposite gender all have their own, and usually different reasons. It doesn't infer one thing or the other. Most MMOs we play are RPGs afterall, and the characters we play aren't meant to be direct projections of ourselves. Though it does seem however, that the people that have the biggest problem with other people playing characters of the opposite gender, are the ones that are least secure in their own sexuality.
I'm secure in my manhood, so are the others. You just made my point without realizing it. If you're secure in your manhood, you're going to play a male character. If you're insecure then you'd still be seeking your true self, thus...rolling a female.
Again, stop being Beta Males.
So secure you have to let everybody know right? : )

Is it important that the "girl" is really a grey haired grandma of 63, or a young girl of 11, or 300 lbs? Nope, that's quite alright. As long as she's not a guy, it's all good!
Play a female toon if ya want. Or play a male. What the hell difference does it make? The only reason this would make a difference is if you are a kid trying to get a cyber-girlfriend cause no RL girls will go near ya.
I always find it funny when I see a mini female monk in Guild Wars pvp that starts cursing and flaming as if there is no tomorrow after losing Not to mention drunk male players who play female toons

There were a few times that I asked about someone's gender in my guild. But usually only because someone with a name along the lines of Xx_Sexy_Bunny_xX or something, had been hitting on all of our male toons in the guild lol. I guess sometimes even the most gullable players in our guild dont believe it anymore
We also had some experience with guys that 'roleplayed' females in our guild. Well, that was their explanation, ours was that they just lied to get free stuff I always get suspicious if a new player with female toon starts asking for items right from the start. Or if they never make use of ventrilo, even if they want to join GvG or other forms of PVP.

I guess it's hard to emphasize sarcasm over the net... but read my previous posts to know where I actually "stand" regarding this issue. Regarding what you replied to, it was to bring to the foreground that the biggest insecurity about "role playing" are peole taking on an opposite gender. Never mind race, color, size or shape... because if you're a giant native american-like bull no one questions it... but if if you're a giant native american-like COW... aaah what's that person's angle eh? Is that person really a FEMALE, that wants to play a giant native american-like cow... or is it a MALE pretending to be a giant native american-like cow?!?!? See the irony yet? Maybe I'm trying too hard... sorry.
All in all, it's a fantasy game. Until companies start forcing people to prove or force them to play their own gender, get over it... really.

So I know a lot of female avatars in mmo's are actually being played by guys and I must admit, I play females sometimes too. Some people say that it's strange, but here's my justification: if I have to stare at an ass shaking in front of me for hours, it might as well be a nice ass. How many of you guys play as females from time to time? And do any of you ladies play as males?
Still the dumbest reason in the book in my opinion. If you are half way decent at an MMO you should be paying more attention to your surroundings than the small clump of pixels that constitutes to your characters ass. I genuinely don't think that's the real reason any guy plays a female character, so it would be nice to hear the truth. I used to make fun of guys who played female characters, but it's just so commonplace I don't care anymore. Don't get me wrong - I don't think there's anything wrong with a guy playing a girl character, I just like to grief them about it for fun :P After years of console gaming where I was usually forced to play a male character I take full advantage of making female toons

The ass thing is a justification for an insecurity not many understand. In reality, androgeny is the ideal aesthetic - female in-game models usually come closer to that aesthetic than male models do.
Never ponder the possibility of homosexuality for "gender confused" players, it's all purely aesthetic.
Interesting, I actually have a male friend who tends to play a female healer avatar and likes coldplay.
As for myself I tend to stick with the sex that fits my conceptualisation of the character I'm making. If the game doesn't offer me to make a man without huge muscles then any kind of male wizard type goes out the window.
I make gender choices based on what I want the personality of the character to be. With MMOs giving plently of alts, I like a bit of variety. From a RP perspective, you need to look at it in the same way as a writer - males can write novels or screenplays with prominent female characters. To some people that's kind of what RP can be - writing a story for a character as you play.
I use to think it was odd for males to play as a female, but then I thought about it and came to the conclusion that no it isn't weird if im going to sit down and stare at a screen I want to either
1. Look muscle bound in a heavy suit of armor wielding a great big 2h-Sword (male)
or
2. Sleak and sexy with a robe covering barely nothing wielding a staff. For me it comes down to what ever character looks best releveant to the class choice and roleplay standards.
I wouldn't feel right if I was a muscle covered defender who was a female. However some kids do favor teh female gender for the specific task of knowing they get treated differently, as someone mentioned, males are more inclined to give a gift to a unknown female, then a male gifting a unknown male.
My main choice of gender comes down to how the character will look in the armor and clothing; I dont want to see a male priest with a robe that shows of his tree trunk legs, I'd much rather have a female, with a body to look, does that make me perverted? or normal? Personaly I go for normal...

Like KOTOR for example.
You look at your character a lot, since it's not a first person game.
So, you had your choice. Look at this for the entire game:
Or, look at this:
If you prefer the bald guy, fine, but from my perspective he's not much to look at compared to the girl.
Would Tomb Raider have become the franchise it is today, if you were playing a guy instead of Lara Croft? I kinda doubt it.
It's hard to play fems as a man when playing Bioware games though because of the tailored dialogue and love interests. Sure it means you get to look at it for your time in them game, but you also have to deal with being hit on by the male cast, which I try to avoid. I have made secondary femchars in everything from KotOR to Mass Effect, but it really doesn't work for me like it does in MMOs. (less reminders of the laws of attraction)
I also canned my femchar in my short time with DOMO because of the gimmick hookup mechanics, can't stand being a target for oblivious dudes' flirtations.

This is the only solution:

I also move for people to be able to only play their appropriate race, color, and profession as well, so there's no more confusion online.
