In all the games I've played over the years, I can only remember creating a female once. That was in Vampire: Bloodlines and it was only because I chose a stealth build and the animation of moving while crouched seemed rather effeminate to me.
Other than that, I always create "mini-me" and play as if it were really me in game.
It's hard to play fems as a man when playing Bioware games though because of the tailored dialogue and love interests. Sure it means you get to look at it for your time in them game, but you also have to deal with being hit on by the male cast, which I try to avoid. I have made secondary femchars in everything from KotOR to Mass Effect, but it really doesn't work for me like it does in MMOs. (less reminders of the laws of attraction) I also canned my femchar in my short time with DOMO because of the gimmick hookup mechanics, can't stand being a target for oblivious dudes' flirtations.
True. You make a fem character in a bioware game because she's more easy on the eyes, but then you have to put up with male NPC's hitting on you, which is distracting.
Buy it's not that hard to ignore since it's not a HUGE part of the game. You're mostly killin' stuff, and solving puzzles.
In MMORPGs I tend to make male characters because I want to interact with the other players as a male, and while you CAN do that as a female character, it's much harder. you have to go that extra step, and say, i'm a guy, not a girl. To much trouble for me.
The exception there was City of Heroes. I don't think any guy playing that game is being honest if they say they didn't make at least a couple of female toons in COH.
It's like, even though you can't draw, suddenly you are given the power to create a hot comic book style female super hero. How can you resist that?
Suddenly you give me a magic pencil and I can draw either Superman or Wonder Woman? I'm probably gonna draw Wonder Woman.
The question is if you play "as" or "with"? I always prefer to play with females as playing with main is a bit gayish for me. I really hate to look a man ass all the time! Also it so awesome to have really powerful babe that is only for you

The reason I play with females is that I am not able to make my alter ego to look like I want him to... I'm more satified with a decent looking woman to play with, than to play with a way too muscular dude with too much hair up his ass. The option in many MMO's to create my alter ego as I want him to be aren't just there. (for the record, that would be a guy of avarage height, with spikey blond hair, green eyes, and a kind of muscular. ) I don't want to play with anything else, or it's female I play with. The only MMO I started with as a dude was Aion. In Guild Wars, I would be able to make a decent looking ranger, but then again, rangers are quite stupid. Or it would be another melee class, but those dude are all bodybuilders on steroids.... So I play mostly with females. And no gay shit involved

*sigh* I really don't think anyone in that game got freudian over as to why they went femchar as much as a test to how far the boob slider will go. Hell, one of my chars was named "Tiggle Biddies", not at all ashamed of that either. ^_^

If you check pubmed, you will find a few scientific studies have indicated that straight males who play female avatars in online environments have a tendency towards latent homosexuality. In fact the results were very similar to studies about straight males who like Coldplay. However, the early results from some follow on studies are now finding that many of male subjects roll their females toons when listening to Coldplay. It's not yet clear if this is causation or correlation.

I roll a chick becuse I like it when she tells me that I cant do, like when I try to cast a spell that is on cool down. Reminds me of mom or something. And when I try to make them as hot as possible it really shows how twisted things can get when you dont think before you do things. But I explain that pervo side of myself with a nice role playing twist- the chick is a dude that has done a awsome sex change. With that I go around my obsession with my mother and I can safly sit down with my father hate.
Oh Freud. You and your love of strange things to inhale.
Sometimes I roll male chars and they always are a representation of me in the alternate world, and other times I make chars modeled after my wife. When I make them after my wife I don't flirt or try to get things because it's my wife. Back off dude.

As for the given justification...as the saying goes, if you're spending THAT much time looking at your character...you're doing it wrong.
lol this is so true.
The only people that worry me are the people that worry if the female toon in front of them is actually a dude or not. who cares! Its an mmo not an online dating service!
Even if it IS a real chick, her big-breasted, smoking hot avatar probably isn't an accurate representation of the person driving the mouse.

I play both, but then, it never really occurred to me that that would be offensive, and/or perverse...
For me, it's just about toon variety, and as others have said, more of a class appropriateness. If you're a slinking around class like a hunter or rogue, it makes more sense to me to be female, whereas if you're a heavy armor wearing, double bladed axe wielding tank, a male character makes more sense. Mage type characters I can go either way, though I add more age if possible.
I guess it never occurred to me that there were people wandering a gaming world trying to pick up chicks. LOL! No doubt folks will also be dismayed that I can't turn invisible or shoot 3 arrows in less than a second in real life, either!

Play a female character......hmm that does not sound bad at all.
Why have i been looking a at a male character for years when i could have looked a female?? I know all male players sneak peak at female avatars, but to play one for myself....never though about it.
For some reason i think i will do it in my next MMO (Mortal Online).
Originally posted by Stevane Yes, I'm a male and I play both female and male avatars. And oddly enough, in all the games that I have played, all my female characters usually outlevel my male toons.
This.
When I got into MMOs with Lineage 2, in Open Beta my first character was a female elf. Come retail release of the game, my main was a Male Human Wizard.
In WoW, my main was a Female NE Hunter. Though, I did start my hunter as a Male, but soon realized I didn't like how the Males shot their bows so I switched to Female. When I left WoW, I think I had an equal amount of male/female characters.
In AoC, my main is a Male Cimmerian Barbarian because I wanted to be like Conan, of course. Still, I have male and female alts.
It just depends on what the game is and how I feel best represents the character I'm creating.
