I for one prefer a "cartoony" stylized game. I think that there's a lot more that a game designer can do with cartoon style than what can be done with photorealism.
Photorealism is literally confined to reality. There are a lot of things that you can't get away with in animation, character, monster and world design. Whereas with a cartoony style, you can literally get away with ANYTHING as long as it fits the style you lay down at the start.
You can really push animation with a cartoony style, focusing on what makes animation great. All the rules of animation can be applied, which is not possible with photorealism. Photorealistic animation is rather boring in my opinion because it's just a mirror of the real world.
The only problem with a cartoon style is that there are far too many stodgy adults/adolescents chastise the style because that have forgotten how great cartoons really are. In the end though, it's all a matter of preference, if you don't like a games visual style, it can be hard to ignore, even if the gameplay is amazing.
I don't understand why people think cartoony graphics = small sys requirements. guild Wars don't have cartoony graphics imo and I can run it with better fps than WoW. Good engine > all. The art style has nothing to do with it.
GW is not a MMO. It has no large scale gameplay other then a few PvP matches. And even those are rubberbandny

Rubberbanding is caused by lag, which in a lot of cases is your internet connection. Other games have this too. I have had far more lag in games like WoW than I ever did in Guild Wars.
Large scale gameplay, how big is that? Just so we can get a reference on what you consider an mmo or not. GW has 12 man pve "raids" and 16 man pvp matches. I guess it's not an mmo if you consider games to be only mmos if they have 24+ man raids available. Shall we go down the list of all the games to decipher what is and what isn't an mmo by that criteria then? And if they aren't an mmo then let's remove them from this website.
Till were not talking runescape graphic detail I could care less if it's cartoonish/anime/realistic/whatever. BUT a known fact is that realistic graphics need more work then cartoonish to look good, in realistic games ugly spots or bad textures are more visible then in a cartoony game.
The funny thing is, runescape has better graphics than 70% of the korean games out. Not attacking you but saying in general, im always surprised by the ignorance some people have about that game...

Surely a game like AoC benefits from having a more photorealistic world
First I'm going to say that I think the graphic's; cartoon vs realistic, should match the game. Take the old cartoon Super Friends. If you made a game based on it, realistic graphic's would be wrong for it as would anime.
You got to match them up, but piling on too much will kill you and this is where the above quote comes in. Does having a more photorealistic world benefit AoC? NO because very few can enjoy it. It's a graphic's hog and at anything other than on a LOW setting your FR goes south never to return. Does it look nice cranked up if you only stand still and enjoy the view? Yes it does. So does LotRO, but I can play LotRO at higher settings and not get bad FR's.
With the exception of anime I don't generally care how the game looks. Didn't even mind DAoC. If you want an audience give them something middle of the world, accessable to MANY players (Vendetta-Online is great for that - Windows, Mac, Lixus) and give it good gameplay.

I agree with the notion that the graphics must match the game and if "cartoony" fits then its right. I mean can you imagine Sam and Max done any other way ? I cant.
So it leads me to a comment I love to make on this topic and I have been making it for a long time. WoW's grafix are excellent! If you understood anything about the Warcraft universe then you would understand why I say that. WoW could not have looked any other way than how it does, they nailed it.
Same with EQ2, same with WHO.
As for AoC, a great example of the grafix TOTALLY NOT fitting the game. Funcom described AoC as dark, brooding and adult. Its about as dark as Mario Kart, as brooding as suduko and as adult as hello kitty island adventures. Even AO was a much better graphical fit for the game than AoC, in fact AO was just plain great for the day.
So no... "cartoony" graphics have not had thier day. Grafix must fit the game.

Im not trying to fanboi AoC by any means, but could you elaborate more so I can see where you're coming from? Like what part or parts of the games art direction or graphics would you change? I can think of a couple off the top of my head (ie. reducing the amount of magic in the world) but whats full opinion on this?

WoW is a prime example of how well-done graphics can often trump eye bleeding technology. You're allowed to be much more flexible with your style.
Animations are something you're going to have to deal with through your entire stay in the MMO world. If a developer has shoddy animations it isn't going to matter how good the graphics are, because you're going to see the poor animations 24/7.
Use the advances in technology for "smart" improvements. I think using it just to take us to the next level of pixel shading or shadows is a bit silly.
I like it when the graphic fits to the world / genre - it must not be high end but consistent and artful with style.
But i dislike very much black edges like in Borderland or other games that used such a way to display graphic.
"Torquemada... do not implore him for compassion. Torquemada... do not beg him for forgiveness. Torquemada... do not ask him for mercy. Let's face it, you can't Torquemada anything!"
Well World of Warcraft is having a massive, massive graphics update when Catalcysm is released, so it will be in league with the best games in the genre, graphical wise. Along with the animations of virtually everything there is in the game, the system requirements will be abominably high. Imagine all of World of Warcraft (Northrend, Outland, Kalimdor, Eastern Kingdom's, everything, characters, weapons, shields, props, NPCs, literally everythingggggg) having insanely good graphics. It'd be a lagfest with poor graphics stuff. But fortunately, I do have some pretty good graphics cards and stuff, and I will be updating them if needed, so I do think that the new graphics will be much better than this cartoony stuff, even though, admittedly, there is a certain attraction to the graphics of World of Wacraft at this very moment of time.
I really, really want the next MMO I play to have graphics like Dragon Age. Too bad it makes a couple more fans on my rig to fire up like a turbo prop.

Cartoony or photo-realistic... I guess as others have said it depends on the game and if it fits 'that game' or not.
To me I really dont care... What I do care is when character models are in 1 style while the world is done in a different style. Thats kinda annoying.
As far as games like WoW... The graphics are fine for that game, seeing as the series itself used that style in the last few installments before WoW was made. It fits and works well for the game. Now if they decided to make say EQ3 with the graphics and look of WoW, then yeah, it just wouldnt fit and would feel cheap. Doing that look in FreeRealms was OK because it was a new game.
So yeah, it all comes down to the game and the look one would expect to go along with that game.

doubt that. Torchlight uses cartoony graphics and a great many people are a fan of that, for example.
Shouldn't gameplay be more important than graphics? Theoretically: yes. Practically: Never. Just look at Alganon. It is bashed because of it's graphics alone. If it would have AoC or Aion-style graphics, but else be the same game, people wouldn't have bashed it that much. Most gamers decide by graphics alone if they're gonna try that game or not. They are superficial. Some companies know that, and give their game good graphics with discussable gamplay (ie Aion) and are successful with that. While other companies assume that the users are not that superficial and then they fell flat on their face with their game (Alganon).
Cartoony Graphics/ Non-High lvl graphic are not accepted anymore?
In my opinion if the Developers were to put less focus on graphics, and instead focus on Animations and Dungons, then we would have better MMORPGs now days. Shouldn’t Gameplay be more important than Graphics? Because older MMOs didn’t have fancy graphics we have today. And games like WoW and ROM prove that Graphics isn’t everything.
I would rather the developers spend their time developing Good Animations, such as Movement, and Melee Swings and such, rather than how many Pixels the game has.
Since systems are becoming more powerful, wouldn’t that Power show more gameplay wise, with lesser graphics? The more graphical the game is, the harder it would be to handle the Mass Scale gameplay, that makes MMORPGs different from RPGs.
We may have had some decent game releases, if the developers didn’t make Graphics one of their main features. Just look at AoC for example.
IMO, these developers fear the criticism that WoW gets for its graphics engine.
Anybody Agree?
I hate when people use negative statement to ask a question... I never know what yes or no means.. does "No" mean that cartoony graphics are ok or does it mean they are not ok... Im sure I could figure it out using what I know of suntax and so on.. but I have no guarantee that the one that asked the question has the same grasp of the concept and he might take my meaning as the opposite of what I intended.

The question is in the poll. Not rocket Science to figure out the Yes or No question.
Unless you can pull off the photo realism of the movie Avatar, I say stay with a cartoony style like WoW's or a claymation style like EQ2. Even with EQ2, I experience the uncanny valley effect.
All future MMOs should be fully built for DX11, require an i7 extreme overclocked to 6 Ghz with nitrogen and 2 HD5970(again, OC so hard that the extra voltage will burn them in a few weeks).
Because cartoony graphics are for casuals.
And lol, most of your points are pretty wrong Tro, not to mention, photorealistic/cartoony isn't exactly black or white.

Im sure I could figure it out using what I know of suntax and so on.. but I have no guarantee that the one that asked the question has the same grasp of the concept and he might take my meaning as the opposite of what I intended.
You can say anything you want. Enjoying Darkfall on lowest settings (as every PvPer out there is tuning graphic down for best performance).

The question is in the poll. Not rocket Science to figure out the Yes or No question.
Unless you can pull off the photo realism of the movie Avatar, I say stay with a cartoony style like WoW's or a claymation style like EQ2. Even with EQ2, I experience the uncanny valley effect.

Cartoony graphics suck!
