The only online game (emphasis on online, it's more of a *parlor* based game) would  be Bang Howdy. It's rather creative, plays like a turn based rts. I suggest looking it up. And it's FTP!

I agree with you on not liking asian games, (besides Final fantasy) they just tend to be the same thing over and over again, I just keep to p2p games.

    Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Wow, my bad. I though by western one meant genre. Dungeons and Dragons Online is by far the best (Having been P2P before moving to it's current model)

  • ya i meant western like the way WoW is.

You might also look at Runes of Magic. I have little experience with it but it didn't *look* asian but absolutely had a WoW feel to it. But as I said, I don't have any real experience with it as I heard that they made a number of changes that truly pushed you to the shop and there was a bit of grinding.

Chronicles of Spellborn is free to play now.

dungeons and dragons online isn't exactly free.

well, if you want to repeat the same fifteen boring dungeons over and over and over, buying new content as you get points, you can level to max free.   There have been people who got to 20 without paying a dime, but they must have a tremendous amount of time on their hands and the tenacity of a bull dog.

I wound up subbing for a month.  I found the game to be very boring as the veteran players rush through the content having done the content a hundred times before.

give it a try, what have you got to lose?

I think the best FTP games are made in Asia. Atlantica Online, Perfect World International, Soul Of The Ultimate Nation, Huxley, Allods Online and I think Runes Of Magic was made by an Asian company. As for Western you can try Dungeons and Dragons Online and The Chronciles Of Spellborn but thats about it.

I' m partial to Anarchy Online. Can play the core game completely f2p and they "should" be upgrading the graphics "soon"

My vote goes for this so far, and DDO. I really like Chronicles of Spellborn for having more of an open world feel and the combat system is the best in my opinion. It is completely free to play at the moment without even a cash shop. It's a shame that this game isn't more populated >:(

Well, it depends on how you define "western".

If you mean western like revolvers and John Wayne (yeah I am messing with you) there are one or 2 in development...

But the best Western MMOs without monthly fees are in my opinion in this order: Guildwars, DDO, AO.

There is actually a eastern made F2P game that is at least worth trying: RoM. Not great compared to a P2P game but still not that bad.

Guildwars costs a few bucks to pay but have no monthly fees,. DDO have micro-transactions. AO have monthly fees if you play with all expansions, the free version have less content.

Nah the worst are made in Asia (for a western audience anyway). Guild Wars is the best by far, not entirely free but no subs after you got the game. RoM is german by the way. DDO is also worth a try but that held my attention for like 2 days...

Waiting for Guild Wars 2, SW:ToR and STO.
    Currently playing Guild Wars, LoTRO).
Played WoW, GW, CO, DDO, RoM, WAR, LoTRO, Allods (Beta) + Tons more that aren't even worth mentioning!

First lets get it of the chest. Some people will comment on F2P mmo as : "Not really free"

F2P does not mean free - its not charity. It means you can play free as long as you like. But for some advanced play you need to pay.

So as for western F2P MMOs :

DDO is the best. Its probably better than most of P2P MMOs out there

    Anarchy Online -By  Funcom

Allods (in closed beta) Made by russian developer - Next big thing!

Runes of Magic (basically free WOW) Made by german developers

Chronicles of Spellborn - European dev , used to be P2P

    Also:

WAR - you can play complete 1rst tier free !

    AOC - first 20 levels free !

So dont believe the hype here on MMORPG.com

The F2P is here and its here to stay

    P2P is DEAD

Guild Wars is not a free because you have to buy it. There is no way you can compare Guild Wars to a game that you dont have to pay ANYTHING for. Ruins Of Magic was made my an Asian company.

Runes of Magic (RoM) is a free massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by the Taiwanese developer Runewaker Entertainment and adapted for the English and German speaking market by German company Frogster Interactive.

DDO online and Spellborn were also games that were pay to play and turned free to play. What are some Western MMOs that were made Free to Play from day 1? All I can think of is Free Realms and Wizard 101 and those games cant compare to Asian free to play games.

Oh sorry did I not point out that GW isn't entirely free, oh forgive my red text.

As for RoM they were adapted by a german developer so therefore it is a western version because its been adjusted to suit a western audience.

Free Realms kicks asian MMO's asses I find. No grind and its user friendly, sure its a kids game but w.e. Runescape too but again thats for kids but these MMO's are a nice way to introduce younger generations into the MMO genre.

My point is ROM was MADE by an Asian Company. I did not say Free Realms or Runescape were bad games but there is just so much more out there made by Asian game companys.  The West has along way to go to catch up with the East when it comes to Free to Play games.

Yeah but the question is what is the best western MMO, I just mean that the german developed game is a western version so thus counts as western.

Sure there are tons more Asian MMO's but they all fail to grab my attention, they either have cutesy anime graphics, are based on something like Kung Fu or martial arts, have oversexualised characters or just end up being complete grind fests.

There may be a few out there with some real substance but as a western gamer I prefer western games that have been tailor made to suit our interests as an audience. Another example is Allods Online, great game, may look a bit like WoW but it sure beats playing Anime Porn Stars Online.

The question was answered in my first post. I said Dungeons and Dragons online or Spellborn. You disagreed about the part where I said the best FTP games are made my Asian companys and Runes Of Magic clearly states it was made by an Asian Comapany.  You may not like these games but thats not what we are talking about. You lost all crediblity when you made it obvious that you dont like Asian games at all.

Well I'm not going to apologise about the fact that Asians can't make MMO's.

We've already been through this, it IS a western MMO because it has been tailored for western audiences even though the original is Asian based. However that means it has been changed since the Asian version and it isn't the same.

Not played Spellborn looks alright, not sure about that odd turning wheel thing though, but like I said I haven't got any experience of it.

Edit: This is just my opinion so don't keep ranting on about it, I wash my hands of this thread, question has been answered so farewell.

I am not talking about tailored. I am talking about MADE. Runes Of Magic was made by an Asian game company. Allods Online is made by an Asian game company.  My point has always been that the best Free To Play mmos are made by Asian game companys. Search is your friend.

Right now I've been playing Mabinogi. It IS an Asian game, but the North American server is located in California, so It's also a western game if you think about it. Pretty damn fun. No combat system is like it. It's pretty fun and you don't need the cash shop at all.

  • MikehaMikeha Member EpicPosts: 9,196

Look for Mabinogi Heroes comming soon. Going to take Free To Play games to the next level.
