Farm town doesn't have enough features to be classified as ROLE PLAYING. If you consider yourself role playing a farmer in Farm Town then why don't you say you are role playing a dot-eating-ghost in Pacman? Is Pacman a rpg?
You misunderstand what RPG means. It sounds like you want it to means people roleplay in the game. The reality is that it simply means it is a system with progressive character advancement.
Your character in Pac Man has no stats, skills, gear or attributes. Pac Man is not an RPG.
Apparently you can't tell what is obviously a sarcasm.
No. I don't think Pacman is an rpg. No. I don't think the person who said "halo is now an rpg" really meant it. We only meant to tell you "by the same token, Farm Town is not an rpg".
And no. Pacman is not an rpg, not multiplayer and Pacman Online doesn't exist... but Pacman Online, again, is still the bestest mmorpg of the year 2009 (please note the smiley face. Thanks!)
To me I always thought mmos had persistent wordls with many people playing together. Today it seems like everything is instanced and soloable just like the classic online rpg.
And that is a GOOD thing.
Take the best features of games and put them together. Persistent cities, AH & open world, instanced dungeons and soloable content = WIN

Ok - so persistent cities... let's look at that.
You just ruled out DDO, PotBS and Champions Online (to name three) as MMORPGs.
The 'Cities' in those games aren't persistent - they are instances.
Open World? Hmmm... that might rule out a heap more if you are not allowing loading zones?
In fact, if you say that instanced cities are ok then please define for us all where the line is between games like "The Witcher" and "Dragon Age Origins" and an MMORPG?
The MMO part?
Why would that matter if you intend to solo it?
The AH?
AI can do that.
Not to mention that what you consider the 'best features' are not what another person might consider the 'best features'?
All Im going to say, to avoid tautology is that, there is nothing Massive about MMORPGs anymore. Not even if you consider the first M of the acronymn as an adjective regarding the numeric scale of players only. Anything with less than "hundreds", this means atleast 200 players is not considered an MMORPG. 200 players on the majority of the games areas. If there are areas where those 200 players cant play together, then it has to be a insignificant % of the total area. 200 players connected on a server doesnt satisfy the requisite, from all the possible methods of interpretation, the gramatical one is the most weak one. Historical, Teleological, Cultural, Logical and other interpration methods are more accurate and they weight on the side that argues MMORPGs requires hundreds of players being able to interact with each other concurrently in the same area at any time if they so wish too. The opposing argument, wants to use the popularity of the genre, to label their own product a MMO itself, so they can sell and advertise it and proffit from it as such. Even though is anti-ethical, hypocrital to do so, gamers are defenseless at this time and age. Its cheaper and easier and more profitable for gaming companies that their side of the argument wins. Consumerist laws are still yet to be applied for the services online these gaming companies are providing. Making a MMORPG as it meant to be is not easy, if game companies stayed true to those requisites, we WOULDNT have hundreds of MOGs, calling themselfs MMOs or MMORPGs. You kick a bush and you find a new "MMO" starving for you money: "play now and win!" "free offer" "buy credits now!". If popular websites werent so hypocrite in the way they deal with this, how they allow certain advertisings and their omissions regarding their responsability with their communities to filter what is and what isnt an MMORPG, there wouldnt remain 1/5 of games listed on this site. -> Looking for "TRUE MMORPG" website/community.
Dude, Everquest isn't dead... it's still there.
"There is only one thing of which I am certain, and that's nothing is certain."
Massive World Lots of players Challenging PVE Real PVP No instancing No clicking books or portals to instant-travel anywhere Persistent / Shared World Encourages grouping & working together Discourages solo play Provides immersion (less tutorial-like quests, no "You are here" markers on minimap, etc.)
Is there a game in MMORPG history that ever got it right for you, Gink?

I loved eq ending at PoP. It just made zero sense that you would go from killing the dieties/avatars of the dieties to killing raid level random mobs thereafter.

And yet EQ is still around... so... are you playing it now... or what? If no... why not?

Any MMO gets old after about 4 or 5 years. Now, if there is an "Everquest Next" coming out that is has hardcore as the original, yet with advanced animations, graphics, U.I., faster combat, etc..., I expect you will find this message board empty.

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
MMORPG is the following:
Dude, Everquest isn't dead... it's still there.
"There is only one thing of which I am certain, and that's nothing is certain."
Is there a game in MMORPG history that ever got it right for you, Gink?
"There is only one thing of which I am certain, and that's nothing is certain."
My definition is simple: Many people playing online at the same time in the same world, representing themselves through their character.
Is there a game in MMORPG history that ever got it right for you, Gink?
