Yes MMO's are dead. The ones available now will be the last MMO's ever made. Those who piss, bitch, cry and moan will need to find a new forum for their anger at what ever it is they are angry about as the MMO forums are going to die a ghastly death just like the genre itself. So rant, hate, bash, flame and cry while you can because the end is near. Thank God.
I wouldn't say dead, but diagnosed with f2p cancer. An over flooding if the f2p model in the market is not really helping, as these types of games tend to have a faster production time, and hence flood the market with many subpar and outdated graphics, and lackluster story telling.
When will companies and the gaming community realize that f2p model is creating a production atmosphere of the "McDonalds" syndrome. Basically pumping and overflooding the market with garbage.
The only thing in my opinion that will be a saving factor is that companies who are serious about saving this ailing genre is too invest in the next gen. graphics, storytelling, and overall quality. Sure it cost more money, but I think gaming fans out there are tired of the lack of quality out there.
Basicaly, there are too many crap choices and not enough quality out there.

I have to be honest. While I'm not a huge fan of f2p games there are some beginning to come out that have more to offer than some p2p games. I'm not a fan of RoM per se but it does have a lot to offer a player and quite frankly so far I'm rather impressed with Allods considering it's going to be f2p.
If anything I've see the main problem being companies were expecting to have the numbers of WoW when they come out with a new game and an overall drop in customer service and support from the p2p companies that reflect in the quality of their games as of late. If anything the lack of quality and customer service being provided by companies that expect you to pay for their product and give them a monthly fee seem to be pushing some players towards the f2p market from what I've seen.
Myself included if this cycle continues.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Sadly I have to agree that there is one f2p game that I do want to try... BERKANIX by Sonov... it's made using the Unreal 3 engi... but I think that's about it for f2p that caught my attention... for the most part, I've tried a lot and found them to be subpar, and still feel that they overflood the market with low quality, outdated product.
As far as p2p, I'm finding that they too are suffering from rushing their titles out, and bringing us anything but next gen.

errrrrr... Some people like "McDonalds" . There is nothing wrong with choice or "fast food", if there is a market for it whats the problem? You are trying to suggest that because there are games akin to "Mcdonalds" it will somehow mean that all food is garbage?
How, exactly, is this genre AILING? Where is the proof to support this non-fact? This topic is full of bloated, spoilt brats that have gorged on MMO's and now claim everything to be bland.
You do understand that it costs million upon millions of £/$ to produce an MMO, there is no way to launch a project, in the real world, that contains every conceivable innovation and type of content YOU desire. It takes time and money to improve upon the basis of these games, that is in their very nature.

The MMORPG genre isn't dying any more than any other genre is dying. It's simply expanding to cater to more audiences.
The MMORPG genre has never exactly been profitable, other than WoW, FFXI, and more recently, EvE. All developers can do is try different combos of things and see what gets them more players.

if you don't understand my reply then....... I fully understand, you are likening some of the MMO's to cheap, garbage fast food. I suggested that some people like those games, and if there is a market for those games then whats the problem.......read my post.
Just because there are many crap F2P games it doesn't make all other MMOs "garbage" or "McDonalds" like. You fail to substantiate your claim that the industry is "ailing", or is it just hyperbole on your part?

You're stuck on the McDonald's analogy... not my fault... I could had said 7/11 or Starbucks and it still would apply. Over abundance is what lowers quality. Espcially when MMO's seem as though they are being pumped out factory style then through a developement studio. in my opinion, developers are homoginizing mmorpgs and with the rampant games appearing with gross implementation of single-player experience game-play, no-lose or consequences for loss, extremely heavy pve with redundent-like quests and heavy instances, its a wonder anyone pays $15/month for that, but then again, not many remember great player-driven environments and openness of games such as pre-trammel uo, EQ, and asherons call.
It's not dying, it's just stagnant atm... in a lull.
I would say its more like a skipping record; each skip of the needle is more of the same.
Maybe someday someone will bump the arm and the song will continue to play on.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

More like the bond that is created between people stranded on an Island together.
Once there is a ship off that island, they leave. Kind of like how UO, EQ , and AC lost subs.
I think MMO critiques are the only critiques that actually have worst judgment then the enthusiasts. or maybe they just don't like the genre and are trying to sabotage it.
PS; Asherons Call and Everquest are still running. If nothing out is better then these older titles, why not be happy playing them?
Nothing excites jaded Grandmasters more than a theoretical novelty
Ofc not. Its not dying.Actually its breeding. Whats dying is the good single player games ,cause either all companies are trying to make mmorpgs or the single rpg's are made easy nowdays, with immersion gameplay and 1st and foremost addiction.Anyone who is old enough and played Badur's gate 1&2,x-com series, morrowind later on etc etc ,can realise gameplay is dying. And its dying in mmorpg's as well. Most mmorpg's either they look and feel like wow, either they try to go sandbox (just afew though),but not in the right manner. I think its all up to leading programmers teams of the developing companies outthere. When they deside to focus on gameplay instead of graficks and impressive spell effects we could end up with something really good. For me it should be an ultima online re-vamp with the qualities standards that blizzard can provide, which they know how to deliver something good ( at least for the majority of market). Biggest part i miss though in the current mmorpg market though is a game that is actucally rpg, means deep and addictive character proggresion, with loads of feats ,traits, skills and talents. Something that can really make you stack and get addictive with your character ,and actually enjoy the leveling part.

Me too. This is something DDO did well. If only they had figured out how to use that system, with a completely open world.

Me too. This is something DDO did well. If only they had figured out how to use that system, with a completely open world.
Some games seem to be moving much further away from that concept than I, personally, would like. I've played games where the classes have literally been condensed into "Fighter" (or "Warrior,") "Rogue," "Mage," and "Cleric" (or just plain "Healer.") I've even seen the Healer and Mage classes be folded into each other. I can't imagine what it feels like to realize that your character is, in every way, a carbon copy of every other character of that class. I suppose that some people might even be OK with the notion.
EDIT: Returning to the topic of your post, I agree what DDO does a very good job with character customization much like its predecessor, Dungeons and Dragons (possibly pre-4e, but I don't really know how much 4th edition rules changed D&D.) I should probably start playing again, heh. DDO empowers the radical character-maker in me that tends to spawn all sorts of strange and unholy combinations of classes and feats that serve no discernable purpose. That's part of the thrill for me, though: I can take two classes, ask myself "How will these work together?" and mash them together.

But the MOG ("non-massivelly" multiplayer online games) genre is having a population boom.

I don't think it's dying.... because are lots of mmo are being released... it has been expanding...
