Time for me to give up MMO's?

raystantzraystantz Final Fantasy XI CorrespondentMember UncommonPosts: 1,237

I've played every game on the market that you can pay a monthly fee to pay. All of them.. some multiple times.

This last time I went from FFXI to DF to WoW and then WoW and DF both.

I haven't played either in about two weeks. There's a few reasons for this though.

#1. I'm also an independent film maker, and nearly all my free time currently goes to that. I feel guilty when I have free time and I spend it on games, instead of that.. the more productive of the two activities I could be doing.

#2. Bored of doing the same pointless quests and raids. DF was fun, but 3 weeks of nothing but goblin killing is enough to make anyone go batty.

So, I've toyed with the option of just giving up MMO's all together and play console games. I've got a 360 and Wii, and tons of games I haven't finished However, the downside to this is that I don't have access to the tv the consoles are on whenever I get the whim to play, and thats why MMO's were perfect since I always have access to my pc.

There will still be times where I will have free time to game, but it won't be for extreme amounts of time except for on rare occassions. More likely is 2-3 hrs, and then not every single night. I may play more on weekends. Like this weekend, I spent last night playing 1 vs 100 and rockband on 360.

Everyone I know plays WoW, but I cannot keep up with it or them with the amount of time I play. I'd have to play an MMO that is alot slower paced that won't outgrow me before I can get to the content. I also cannot play an MMO without PVP.. I've tried it, and the only game I like that doesn't do pvp is FFXI.

So, what else should I play or should I give up MMO's?

I don't mind playing something I have already played.. things change.

Tried EVE? Dose the concept behind it appeal at all?

    Dem hibbies! Dey be wrong!

I tried EVE.. but I'm just not a space fan. That and the fact that it takes a Excel spreadsheet wizard to understand what the heck all of it means.

I'll stick to games where I can see my character and stand on solid ground.

    Yes.

"Traditionally, massively multiplier online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars – combat, exploration and character progression. In Alganon, in addition to these we've added the fourth pillar to the equation: Copy & Paste."

I usually find these posts to be mostly snide and kind of tongue in cheek but your sentiment seems to be quite honest to say the least.  Me personally I'm a much bigger fan of video games than just mmo's (which from the logic most use I'm starting to think that is more of a rarity around here.), to me mmo's are just video games and I feel the same way there are often times when nothing inspires me to play at that point I head offline and spend most of my time in console gaming.

Having said that I'm not sure if that's an option for you but I certainly think you should avoid playing something simply because it's an mmo and you feel like you should be playing mmo's it will just lead to the usual bitterness we see on these boards.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Yeah, its just hard for me to the get the same excitement out of offline games as I do with online games, especially MMO's but then again having played all of them.. its kinda tough to say that either.

i can see that you are an ex FFXI player

seeing that, it's easy enough for me to say " take a break now, do what you have to do in your real life, then when FFXIV comes next year, play that"

if SE deliver ( and i know they always do ) their word on bringing in the Casual in FFXIV, then i think it will be the best game for you

as t hey mentioned, they want players that can only play 1 or 2 hours a day to still enjoy FFXIV

    So What Now?

  • GismolandGismoland Member UncommonPosts: 79

    In The End..

Maturity, the resaults of playing MMOs that continually pump out the same game over and over, stealing from each others items and quests and world like play areas. You've gotten old and your mind is telling you to find something more interesting, Life. Can't help it, Can't stop it.

As for console games, they seem to be droping from RPGs to FPS or SIMS these days.. everyone wants to kill stuff in the most gorish ways... damn kids are killing the gaming industry for us older players..

I recommend getting a Playstation 2 / Playstation 3 - XBow 360 will go out of business soon enough due the copyright in-fringments coming out on the games they keep taking from Sony..

If your one for simple but Excellent RPG - Mana Khemia Collection is worth it.. As for PS3 there are alot of new games on the make coming out this year, something worth investing in.. 8)

Hope your Inner-Child comes to the light again..

  • johnmatthaisjohnmatthais Member CommonPosts: 2,663

Agreed. Except that the 360 is run by Microsoft and no way they're going under any time soon. Not to mention, MS's games aren't infringing on anything. It's all the third-party games. Get your facts straight. ;D

In any case, I personally am waiting on the English release of White Knight Chronicles. It looks pretty cool. Other games you could check out are Persona 1-4 (or any other Shin Megami Tensei game except the MMO [and no, the MMO is NOT a good representation of the series]), Demon's Souls (apparently the most hardcore RPG to come out recently), the Tales of games, etc.

I suggest you read more on copyrights and the lawsuits on microsolf of late.. they're being sue for just about anything..

It sounds to me like you should take a break. Come back in 6 months or so and try again, everything get boring if you do it too much and most MMOs are very time consuming for people with little spare time.

Get Dragon age or Diablo 3 (when it releases) instead, single player games are a lot less demanding and  you can play when you feels for it. Or maybe you should try Guildwars, you don't need to spend so much time there to be able to get somewhere.

Yes...but so is every big company and since the gaming industry is headed downhill, people are suing eachother for the vaguest of infractions.

Microsoft hardly makes any games themselves. It's all 3rd party. Despite popular belief, companies like Bungie are third party. Microsoft Game Studios mainly publishes 3rd party games. Especially now that Ensemble closed down. MS has no control over the content in those games.

The only thing I can think of that MS would be sued for related to video games are the Xbox avatars.

Let me put it like this, Microsoft is one of the biggest companies out there with a market cap of over 270 billion dollars which keeps on increasing. In the last 3 months there stock has gone from $24 to $31, are you seriously telling me there going down?

You might want to stray away from mmorpgs since that seems to be the only things your playing. You like the PvP aspect of the games but don't want to have to put alot of time into playing the game each night to keep up with everyone else. So I would suggest maybe some mmofps which you might not even like FPS' but there are also RTS' you can play.

Games like Warcraft, Age of Empires, Dreamlords, etc. This way you can either play just for fun using your instinct playing against someone else or you can take the time to think about strategies in the game and sure ways to defeat your opponent.

The choice is yours because you might not even like First Person Shooters or Real Time Strategies.

    It's pretty simple----->

    1) just like me, you're bored because a game that's just for you hasn't come out yet, it's probably come to the point where you'd rather be doing more productive stuff than wasting your own time on games you don't think are worth it for you anymore

    2) wait for ffxiv to come out because as ffxi players we should know that the most fun was from there (assuming that you did all the endgame stories and such) but even if you didn't----all the side stories and quests and massive cutscenes we're still really entertaining

    3) play alternatives while waiting (i.e. heroes of newerth, DotA, left4dead(2), lots of good fps and games out there)

    4) since you're a film maker u should try playing fallout3 if u haven't (it's got that nice unique rpg feel with skill talents that make the game really interactive despite it being a shooter)

    5) The number one reason that people get bored (IMO) is that you don't have a solid group of people you enjoy playing with in a game.  I have found that playing mmorpgs with a group of people that you know and trust will greatly change your gampelay experience.

Have Played: FFXI WoW Aion Maplestory Runescape GrandFantasia RoM JD Rohan Cabal MateriaMagica Ragnarok(2) DDO
    Currently Playing: -nothing-

More or less in the same boat, and here's something that's been working for me.  I bought Borderlands.  Been great at scratching that "must level and collect loot" itch, although the PvP stuff is an afterthought, unbalanced, and full of exploiters (I refuse to call them hacks, since most of the users wouldn't know a real hacker from butter knife).

So, for my PvP itch, I started playing League of Legends.  Free2play, and a match takes about an hour.  May not work for you, and honestly, I figure I got about another month, maybe less before I get bored and find something different to play myself.  But it works for now, you know?

This is absolutely rigth, you fell more confortable with friends and have a better game (even if is a bad game). Now returning to your problem, you are bored of mmo games, but maybe you have to try F2P games, some are quite good and beter for ocasinal play. If you don't want or don't feel like want to try then rest for a while and then came back and try again with any new mmorpg from the market.

MicroSoft = Heading for Global Take Over = Crushed in the head, split up and drawn up for small factions to nibble on.. the only reason it's so huge is its marketing of Windows N Office N Games till it screws the designers over.. The new Win Office that was to be released with Win 7 was Sued to hell by Canada cause they stole the core program from them.. go figure..

Back to main subject - 6months from a computer will often cure any addiction to MMOs or Games.. *EviL GriN*

Yes, I hear Canada, Inc releases tons of great products. =P Really?

In any case, that isn't proof at all MS is going down. Name one game they got sued because of. Name one game that the dev wasn't sued instead. The devs of third party games run their games. MS runs Xbox Live. Think before you spit stuff out.

I say its time to give up on MMOs...

Im in the same boat.  Im in the Marine Corps, and during the week days, I dont have much time for games, as working out after work takes up most my time.  I've play just about every MMO more than once in the past year, cant find any that I enjoy or suit me.  Im currently in DF, but I think im done with it, as im bored shitless grinding off Kobolds, and the game feels deserted.

Right now, i'd say stick to single player or more casual games.

"Stole the core program"? Get your facts straight. They only used a form of XML which was patented by another company. All they have to do is remove it, and pay that company $250 Million. Sure that may seem like a lot, but Microsoft is a $270 BILLION Dollar compay. That's nothing to them. And you say they "sued to hell". lol Microsoft could pay about 1000 companies $250 Million AND they would STILL have $20 Billion. So, Microsoft is not going down anytime soon, no matter how much you want it to.

@OP ;I know how you feel. Like others, I suggest you take a break from MMOs. That way, when you come back, they will be way more fun.

  • MikehaMikeha Member EpicPosts: 9,196

I feel there is nonthing out right now worth paying for so go with a Free To Play to get your MMO fix. I recommend Requim: Momento Mori. Its got nice graphics and sound with PVE and PVP.Since its free you can play when ever you feel like it.  I just started playing and I am really impressed with it.

On the contrary, I've found myself playing games I'm absolutely "over with" just because I enjoy the company of my friends. Don't let your buddies shadow over the fact that you hate a game.
