the day a computer game comes out 100% bug free is the day it rains vaginas and hell freezes over and the universe implodes destroying all existence

We can control it to a degree - by demanding trial versions before release, and refusing to buy MMOs which are buggy and incomplete.

No MMO has even been close to 100% bug-free. That's not the standard I require, but I do require that features work properly, and the game is stable and runs smoothly.

The impossibilty of perfection is no excuse for garbage.

i agree with that. my posts point was that no mmo is bug free. 100% agree with you when game is unstable or incomplete people should stay away.

Which they already do.Once a game is released and the word gets around on how broken and incomplete it is it starts losing subs.

    Currently Playing: World of Warcraft

I was slightly interested until this Klingon Play forced PvP BS popped up...now its just another PoS MMO that will lose every initial sub; save maybe 100k in under 3mo.

my expectations are low cuz im keeping them open and giving the game a chance and have fun while playing, when the game is doing good down the road we all expect to see you haters there playing.

I suspect that the game will release not quite finished and up to standards but enough to release. Alot of subscribers will be gained, alot of subscribers will be dissapointed.

STO will retain a respectable ammount of subscribers but only because it will release in a time when theres nothing new.

2010 will be the worst year for new mmo's and will be rescued by the release of SWTOR sometime in the fall of 2011 after a huge announcement is made about its delay.

Therefore STO will enjoy a successful year but ultimately for the wrong reasons.

Alot of MMO's do EFFECTIVELY offer free trials at the very start....... they call them "Open Beta".

Theoretically the only thing that's SUPPOSED to be different then the last beta release and the release candidate is the version number. That's not always true in practice... though usualy you can get a pretty good general feel for what a game is going to be like at release by playing during the later part of an Open Beta.

This effectively lets the game company do a free trial....without eating into initial sales since you can't play with the beta client once the game is released...you have to go out and purchase the release candidate software.

It's true that alot of games won't offer a Free Trial for a few months after launch. I have no problem with that actually....I'm patient....and usualy you get a better product/experience by waiting a couple months anyways.  I'd be interested to know the real, inside reasons for a lack of free trials at launch however. I'm not totaly convinced that it all comes down to fear of loosing sales/profits due to inability to live upto hype... that may be a factor but I suspect  it may also have to do with not burning their relationship with retailers (who they depend on for shelf space for impulse buyers).

I HAVE been told that companies make the same or higher profits from digital downloads then they do from selling actual boxed versions of a game. Remember that the retailers get a good chunk of the proffits from a box sale at a store....and also there is an additional cost for producing the physical copies of the game (CD, Manuals, Box, Packaging Materia, etc). One thing I DO know is that ALL subscription based services (and most MMO's essentialy fall into that category) live or die on thier monthlies (subscriptions).  It's rare (As far as I know) that a subscription based service recoups it's development costs or even comes close based upon it's initial sales/setup fees. Usualy it takes at least a few months worth of subscriptions and sometimes even a few years to recoup all development costs and start turning a proffit (I'm guessing MMO's will probably follow a similar pattern). Remember with software, the vast majority of the costs tend to be sunk up front...during development. There are operating costs for each month.... but for most ASP's these tend to be a small fraction of what the development costs run.  Not sure, but I'm guessing that would hold true for most MMO's.
