General: Report: Blizzard's Next MMO an MMOFPS?

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Blue's News is reporting on a rumor story originating from French gaming site NoFrag that Blizzard's next MMO may actually be an MMOFPS. The report, which has been put through The Google, states that the game would contain a social / lifestyle element a'la The Sims, alongside an FPS component where players would vie for objectives. Seems like an odd pairing.

"Honey, hurry up pulling that carpet up! We've got an assassination appointment at 3PM!"

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Online anyone?

With no sources to confirm the rumor, this story is simply that, a rumor. However, Blizzard has stated that whatever their new MMOG was, it would be "significantly differentiated enough" from World of Warcraft. I suppose this counts!

Assuming that something got lost-in-translation and Blizzard really was developing an MMOFPS, would you be interested? Let us know in the comments below!

UPDATE: User Artaryl offers his own translation:

Blizzard is working on a MMOFPS

Information obtained (which are from someone inside, near that project) sustain that the next MMO from Blizzard would be in part a FPS. It would be in a futuristic universe. That will be a clear change from MMORPG like World of Warcraft.

In this new MMO, each players would have 2 "life": It's first would be a sort on Sims Online, big hub with social interactions and the possibility to connect yourself to a second life. That second life would be the combat part in subjective view (third person perhaps).

We do not have more details for now. We must precise however that this project got nothing to do with the rumors on a Call of Duty MMO.

Thanks Artaryl!

Is it coincidence that a rumor comes out that Blizzard may be working on an MMOFPS and That its sister company is working on a MMOFPS as well? Or could they both be working on on the same title both doing the parts that they do best in a collaboration effort?   I cannot see them competing in the same game genre.

    From NoFrag

    Blizzard travaille sur un MMOFPS

D'après nos informations (obtenues, comme on dit, d'une source proche du dossier), le prochain MMO de Blizzard serait en partie un FPS. Il se déroulera dans un univers futuriste. Ca change clairement du MMORPG à la World of Warcraft.

Connect to the second life? (that is properly translated, I'm sure someone could do even better but the meaning remain the same) Matrix anyone?

Mah I guess we'll have to wait and see

That would be very interesting indeed. Definitely going to be following this game.

Would be a good way to take the next step. Blizzard must have seen the power of social gaming in its first MMO. There are way too many casuals who log in just for the social experience and some form of simple, fast combat content to spice things up. This would get them in, especially if the world looks impressive. And maybe it'll get FPS players who like the persistent world experience, as well.

I always thought MMOs had to have much more than combat, but other stuff is really hard to do in video games, especially in a massively multiplayer setting.

Though it feels too different for Blizzard. So I'm saying either kudos for the guts, or just plain BS! :)

Years ago Blizzard sure snagged themselves many RTS players and converted them into MMO players. Why not try the FPS pool this time around?

Yes, that would condense it to the two dominant spheres, cybering and fragging. The result can be totally terrible or totally awesome. I missed the social life part SWG had ever since. A MMO that could capture that AND combat could be cool.

Hey, maybe they make SWG II, lol. XD

A mmofps would make alot of sense for Blizzard considering they want WoW to live forever. Maybe this year Blizzard will unveil their new mmo. The anticipation of playing Blizzard's next mmo is more fun than actually playing mmos at the moment.

This sounds like a 'CIA' MMO.  I'd rather see something along the lines of "Ninjas and Superspys " by Palladium.  Now that would rock!

As to the 'Second Life' aspect, I'll pass.

Oh man... I really hope this isn't true, I can't stand FPS games anymore now that I am older, they just bore me to death after 10 minutes of play.

I'm not going to be surprised if it's true, I probably won't play it though, i've really tried to like FPS these past few years I just can't get into them anymore.

I also agree.  I've been tired of FPS games since Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake (marking my age )

I don't mind the combat being fps style with the option for melee weapons and such as long as the game has plenty of rpg elements and a big open world.

All I can say is it might work for them odds are that it would work but I still say fail.

Sounds like the rumors may be true about the Call of Duty Modern Warfare mmo. Is turning out to br true.

If Blizz is making a FPS, hopefully they won't follow their sister companies suit.

While ModernWarfare 2 may have moved units... the online portion is terrible.

-Hackers/cheats/aimbots ruining game after game.  Without GM's or a player run 'vote to kick' system in place to deal with the db's while IW tries to think of a way to detect/ban them... the game is almost not worth playing.

-Games are too short and too small.  Where CoD4 had very small maps yet allowed a larger number of players, MW2 just doesn't doesn't balance the map size:team size ratio very well.

    - No lean?  Seriously?  No functional lean?  Minor detail, but seriously funny and annoying.

    - No hardcore mode without FF.

    - No options to filter games without kill cam or nade launchers, etc.,.. Yeah, I know... no dedicated servers, but still.  There should be more options when looking for games.

COD:MW2 was an epic fail PC wise tbh, it only moved large number of units on the consoles, where it hit the number 1 sales charts, on the PC sales, i think it only managed to reach number 4... and all those reasons you state, while perhaps not something the console brigade are used to having, its something thats become 'the norm' so to speak, on PC, MW2 wasnt really made for the PC i think, kind of odd, but, at least can see where IW are headed. Strange how a company can go from Hero to Zero with a single game release...

Someone joked about the new Blizzard game being the 'swg2' which, although totally out of the question, might not be that far off the mark, for one thing, Blizzard, somehow i doubt the would pay to use someone elses IP, when they can create one of their own, and secondly, the factors/features of SWG that made SWG so popular at the time, wasn't necessarily anything to do with star wars itself, but if the skill tree concepts were used, as opposed to the xp/level one, now that might be interesting.

I kind of hope they don't tell us anything about it until right before it comes out.  I hate waiting for something for years and then finding out after all the hype its not as cool as we thought.

I want unique features and well thought out play, if we press they may cave and give us the same junk.

I hope its not true for the fact I want a real attempt at an MMORTS and Blizzard could pull it off.
